Memdisk and USB Floppy
I just wanted to chime in and mention that I'm running into the problem with getting a "Non-system disk..." error on a system using a USB floppy when the floppy is not attached when I try to boot the system over the network using memdisk to boot a floppy image. Its actually fairly important to be able to do this, as the architecture of the hardware that I'm working with utilizes

Can anyone please tell me how to create a bootable 10MB hard disk image for use with memdisk? I'd like to use FreeDOS. And I know little of DOS. Thanks.

Boot image from hard drive from syslinux initiated by a floppy disk boot
I have been trying to find the information by searching through the archives and google, so I am sorry if this question has been asked before I just have not been able to find an answer. I have a syslinux boot floppy which loads to the boot prompt, I wish to load a .gz image which is on my hd0 0 by using memdisk as the kernel. I have tried to kernel memdisk append root=/dev/hd0 0 (also just

Feature request: script generation
I did not subscribe to the list. I''ve been using shorewall for some time and I appreciate it very much. I think it would be useful to have an option to generate a script of the commands Shorewall is about to issue, instead of issuing the commands directly. This script could then be used for revision, modification, and could also be used on another system. I thought about modifying

Memdisk Hard Disk Images
I'm a relatively new user of Linux, and a complete newbie with Syslinux/Isolinux. Does anyone know of a way to make a hard disk image compatible with Memdisk/ISOLINUX that is for DOS or Windows. I'm trying to use it to build a techies toolkit boot CD with several boot floppy images I use in my job, and I am wanting to make a hard drive file for use by it... Also, is there a utility for

PXELINUX v. bpbatch
What is the difference between PXELINUX and bpbatch ? AFAICT, bpbatch doe not require a TFTP server which supports the 'tsize' option. So in the absence of such a server, I may need to explore bpbatch... It seems that bpbatch can be used to remotely boot DOS. Can PXELINUX also do this? -- John

memdisk and usb flash devices as primary hard drives.
Has anybody tried to boot a dos disk via memdisk with a usb flash device as a primary hard drive? I have a 512MB flash key that when connected becomes my primary hard drive (new bios) - 0x80. If I boot a MS-DOS 7.10 floppy, one gets the command prompt and I can see the contents of my flash key as drive C:. But, if I make a image of the floppy and boot the image via memdisk, then memdisk

Could not find kernel image: memdisk error
Hi, I looked at the web http://clic.mandrakesoft.com/documentation/pxe/ch06.html, and create a floppy boot image by : dd if=/dev/fd0 of=boot.img. I copied the boot.img to /tftpboot, and my /tftpboot/pxelinux.cfg/default is : default freedos display boot.msg label freedos KERNEL memdisk APPEND initrd=/boot.img When I boot up my client, it shows : could not find kernel image: memdisk What

Modify memdisk to mask/overlay start of hard drive
I have a somewhat unique problem I am trying to solve that requires me to temporarily replace the first 63s of the main hard drive and boot the result. Basically, I am hoping it is possible to modify memdisk to serve requests for the first 63 sectors from a ram disk and pass other requests through to the hard drive. There will never be a read spanning the two, so I don't need it to be able to

Network disk? (like memdisk but over the network)
Hi, I've successfully got DOS booting over PXE with Memdisk, but as RAM is severely limited in the PCs I'm using (only 32-64MB) I can't load a huge Memdisk image to run large DOS programs, Windows, etc. Are there any programs out there like Memdisk, but instead of storing the disk in RAM they read it over the network? (A "netdisk" program.) This would be a really useful

memdisk locks when loading imz dos image
I have been using memdisk (version 3.82) with no problem. I use it to boot my x86 computer with a compressed image I created/modified from an original DOS floppy bootable diskette. The original size of the image is 2.44 MB. I tried memdisk (version 3.83) and the bootable image gets uncompressed, bu the computer locks up and the las two lines in my screen are: Loading Boot Sector... Booting...

MEMDISK issue with OptiPlex GX280,620
A kind request for help please. MEMDISK is causing an issue with the Dell OptiPlex GX280 and GX620 platforms. Booting a PC-DOS/Ghost, disk image is successful (and proper) when using version 3.83. See results below: MEMDISK 3.83: Ramdisk at 0x07eeaa00, length 0x007bc000 command line: initrd=images/ghostclient/280_620/osbootc.img BOOT_IMAGE=memdisk MEMDISK: Image seems to have fractional end

memdisk image problems on shuttle hardware
hpa, Seeing your post about 3.71, I wanted to get a message out even though I don't have the stats right now. I am having a problem with memdisk with a lot of shuttle computers, but also affects a variety of other hardware (low though, 5%? less?). The image that I can most reliably test against is the Hitachi Drive fitness Test.

memdisk and winxp boot disk
syslinux-1.75 We have many legacy boot disks (setup for nics, scsi adapters, ...) and I'm trying to put all of them on 1 CD which would ask the user "which floppy image you want to boot?" I'm using isolinux. I've a problem with the winxp boot floppy made as per: http://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?ID=KB;EN-US;Q305595 (format a: and then cp ntldr

Booting firmware harddisk image with memdisk fails
Hi, I once again have a problem with memdisk failing to boot a harddisk image to update my Thinkpad X200s firmware. I extracted the harddisk image from the eltorito type 4 ISO using the isobar tool. Then I added memdisk using this image as initrd to my grub, rebooted and it boots into PC DOS and then freezes (ctrl-alt-del still works to reboot the system). Inside Qemu however it works fine

Usin ISO Linux & Memdisk to create a Viritual Floppydrive that Linux & Windows can load driver disk from.
With windows, if your "virtual" floppy is drive B:, then windows will treat it specially. It will basically copy the contents into memory from real mode using int13h, knowing that it will not be able to access the device after it switches to protected mode. I asked a few days ago about support for making a memdisk image behave as drive B:, but got no answer. :-( We have our
