Axes labels, greek letters and spaces
Hello all, I can't seem to figure how to use a greek character in expression() in plot() labels without adding a space. So for example below when plotting this out x<-1:10 plot(x,x^2, xlab=expression(Chlorophyll~italic(a)~mu~g~cm^-2)) the axis label read as μ g cm^-2 because I have space there with a tilda. But if I remove the tilda then my units are mug cm^-2. Can anyone recommend a

Working With Variables Having Different Lengths
Because of regulatory requirement changes over several decades and weather conditions preventing site access the variables in my data set have different lengths. I'd like guidance on how to perform linear regressions and other models with these variables. For example, there are 2206 rows for the parameter "TDS" but only 1191 rows for the parameter "Cond." Such

Changing data frame column headings
I have a reshaped data frame with value column headings concatenated from two column headings in the melted data frame. I want to change all 56 headings in a single command, but 'names' allows me to change only one at a time. In Hadley's 2007 article on reshape in the Journal of Statistical Software he mentions a 'rename' function, but I cannot find that. Is there a way to

How to subset() from data frame using specific rows
I have a data frame called chemdata with this structure: > str(chemdata) 'data.frame': 14886 obs. of 4 variables: $ site : Factor w/ 148 levels "BC-0.5","BC-1",..: 104 145 126 115 114 128 124 2 3 3 ... $ sampdate: Date, format: "1996-12-27" "1996-08-22" ... $ param : Factor w/ 8 levels "As","Ca","Cl",..:

reshape2's dcast() Adds NAs to Data Frame
I need to understand how and why dcast() adds NAs to a data frame that contained no missing values. The database table of chemical concentrations has all missing values removed because they cannot contribute to data analyses. The structure of the R data frame of these data have no NA values, and neither does the data frame resulting from applying the reshape2 melt() function to it. However,

New Eyes Needed to See Syntax Error
One of many scripts to produce 4 lattice plots on one page keeps throwing an error. I've tried manipulating the file to eliminate the error, but have not been able to do so. The error is: > source('bicarb.R') Error in source("bicarb.R") : bicarb.R:15:1: unexpected symbol 14: 15: hco33 ^ The 'h' is in column 0 so the caret would be column -1, but it's

singular gradient error in nls
I am trying to fit a nonlinear regression to infiltration data in order to determine saturated hydraulic conductivity and matric pressure. The original equation can be found in Bagarello et al. 2004 SSSAJ (green-ampt equation for falling head including gravity). I am also VERY new to R and to nonlinear regressions. I have searched the posts, but am still unable to determine why my data come up

Controlling Order of Panels in Lattice Trellis Plots
With multiple panels in a lattice trellis plot the sequence is, for example, 1, 10, 11, 12, 2, 3, 4. I want the sequence to be 1, 2, 3, 4, 10, 11, 12. Reading ?strip.default and the appropriate section in the Lattice book I'm not seeing how to specify the 'human' numeric order rather than the computer numeric order. A pointer will be appreciated. TIA, Rich

Modifying Package Data
The bio.infer package contains a data frame /usr/lib/R/library/bio.infer/data/itis.ttable.rda that needs to be modified. After loading the bio.infer package and attaching the data frame with the data() function, I wrote the data frame to a text file. After adding another row to the data frame I applied read.table() to create a data frame, but it's in my pwd, not the R library data

cenbox(): Changing Default x-axis Group Labels
I've looked at the lattice book and the 'R Graphics Cookbook' without seeing how to change the labels along the x axis for groups in a box plot, specifically cenbox(). The attached example has a main and axes labels with default group labels. Please point me to a reference on how I can change 'FALSE' and 'TRUE' to something more easily understood by viewers. TIA,

How to Include greek symbol in axis label?
Hi, I'm fairly new to R, so hopefully this is an easy question... On a plot, I would like to have the y label read: "Response(phi)" with phi = the greek character. From old posts I've found this: title(ylab=expression(paste("Response (", phi, ")"))) This displays nicely, but in the default font. I would like to use font=6 (which is the font of the other

Mixed Latin, Greek and subscript characters in axis label
Dear R-helpers, I have been trying to figure out how to plot a graph with an axis label consisting of a mixture of Latin, Greek and subscript characters. Specifically, I need to write A[beta]{1-42}, where A is Latin script A, [beta] is Greek lower case beta and {1-42} is subscript '1-42'. I can use xlab=expression(beta[1-42]) and obtain the [beta]{1-42} part of the label. But, I can't

newline in lattice axis label
Hi, I have a 3 panel xyplot with different variables in the y axis. I'm trying to insert a newline after "Width (cm)," in the ylab argument as in the example below. My goal is to have the y axis label broken into two lines, split after the string just mentioned. plotfun <- function() { fakedf <- data.frame(A = sample(1:100, 50), B = rnorm(50),

Lattice bwplot(): Changing Orientation of Plots in Multipanel Display
I've looked again at Deepayan Sakar's 'Lattice' book and not seeing the information I know must be in there. A clue stick would be much appreciated. A pair of box-and-whisker plots for two conditions of the same data set display each box plot horizontally (see attached pH figure). Relations of the two are not as easily seen as they would be if the two panels had the plots

Fwd: Learning advanced R
Hi Albrecht, I am forwarding your reply to the full group. It's been a while since I did this and I don't remember the details. Maybe someone else can comment. (I am a bit busy at the moment.) If no one supplies the information in a few days I will try to take a look. In the meantime you can start your reading on-line. :-) Regards, Eric Dear Eric, I downloaded the material from

Combining a greek letter and a newline on the same label
Hi, I would like to add a two-lines label consisting of: "Delta word1\n word2" (with Delta being the actual greek letter). However, when I try "expression(paste(Delta,"word1\nword2"))", I obtain the following display: "word1\n Delta word2". Do you have any idea on how to obtain the desired display? Thank you for your help! Sebastien [[alternative HTML

Greek letter included in a character vector
Hello, In the past I have used "expression" to include greek letters in axis labels, but this time I need to include the greek letter as part of a legend. Basically, I need to create the following vector to rename the levels of a factor: c("Interferon-gamma", "IL-10", "IL-5"), where "gamma" obviously needs to be printed as the greek letter

longitudinal study
Hello R user, I have a data set from a longitudinal study ( sample below) where subjects are followed over time. Second column (status) contains info about if subject is dead or still in the study and third column is time measured in the week. Here is what I need: if status is not dead or unknown take the last week, if status is dead or unknown I need to have corresponding week. Desired resulst:
