EL 6 rollout strategies? (Scientific Linux)
I was wondering what feedback might be offered by the CentOS community on their
experiences using Scientific Linux?
I'm a long-time Centos user, and am basically happy with CentOS. I understand
there are delays getting EL 6 out. We have been long anxious to roll out EL 6
as soon as it's ready, but our time window for rollout is looming and we will
need to act. (for business reasons,

Rollout tips
Rich and I have updated the Wiki page "Asterisk rollout tips" with advice on how to plan
and implement your Asterisk rollout. This page is based on many discussions on the
mailing list, so don't be surprised if your comment or thought is included in the
text. Thank you for your input!

Automating Windows Update
Hi guys I was just wondering if there's already a way to automate the process of updating Windows to be specific XP. My idea is to mimic how a Windows server domain controller can rollout critical update on the entire domain. Can Samba do this? Thanks for any info

who is using puppet?
Hi There,
I''m implementing puppet for a large scale Enterprise, with a lot of sites
and a lot of different setups (for about 1500 Linux and Solaris machines).
Now, the time has come to get some management attention, and of course, the
first question I''ll have is who else is using puppet....
So I thought it Worth''s a try to ask - who is using puppet in a large scale

EL6, xinetd, and permissions. What am I missing?
Staging for a rollout of EL 6, and ran into a very strange permissions issue
with xinetd that defies all (my) logic.
It's a script called "spfiled" that we use for messaging between our server
cluster servers. I'm trying to get it to run with "least permissions
necessary". Because it reads/writes files in conjunction with a web-based
service, it runs as user

2.2.18 initial setup permissions problem
I'm using Dovecot 2.2.18, compiled from source, on CentOS 6.
I'm running into a permissions problem with my first rollout of Dovecot
which has to do with directory permissions:

stat(/home/username/Maildir/tmp) failed: Permission denied
(euid=596(<unknown>) egid=97(dovecot) missing +x perm:

RE: 5, 000 concurrent calls system rollout question
Isn't it ridiculous that Hammer charges an arm and a leg for any work they do. For systems as large as that one, we just setup a seperate one, connect them back to back and run automated script to burn it in.

wordpress.com and puppet, would they use it to update mysql db schema's also?
Say for example wordpress.com uses puppet to rollout the wordpress software
for its customers.
During updates to the software, say there are mysql schema updates.
i.e. say they have 100K mysql databases, 1 for each blog.
And the database for each blog as to be updated to version x which adds a
few tables, columns to tables etc.
If they have 100K wordpress installations spanning hundreds of

Upgrading ocfs2 when applying kernel patches.
I am in the middle of rolling RHEL 4 update 5 ( 2.6.9-55) through my
servers. We use a development, QA, and production rollout.
Unfortunately I have ocfs members in each of these groups that need to
share filesystems.
The network compatibility issues between ocfs2 tools 1.2.4 and 1.2.5 are
causing the members to not be able to operate with ocfs.
Hence this breaks my systems or causes me to

For example I wish to install evms from dag's repo. Is there any problem?
Thanks for your great job.

megaraid problem
Hi,
I'm trying to install Centos 4.3 x86 on a PE 1400SC but the install doesn't
find any HD's.
So then I get the option to load a module, so I choose for the megaraid_mbox
module for the LSI LOGIC 4CH PERC but my RAID5 still doesn't get recognised.
Had the same problem 2 years ago with FC3 wich was due to the megaraid
module wich got obsolete in the 2.6 kernel but somebody filed

Citrix, Samba PDC experiences.
Hi all,
I've dug through the lists and google, but haven't found very
much info on using Citrix with a samba PDC. The small number of
messages and information I've found, lead me to believe it will
work. Does anyone have any first hand knowledge they'd be
willing to share? I'm currently involved in rolling out Citrix
for proprietary windows apps for remote offices.

Soundpoint IP 430 -- discontinued.
Hey, all. I'm in the middle of a rollout, and just learned that the
SoundPoint IP 430 -- my favorite mid-range phone -- has been discontinued.
The heir apparent is the SoundPoint IP 450 -- for a low, low, low $130
more/handset. AND it doesn't look as nice.
Ouch.
Does anyone have any recommendations -- Polycom or otherwise -- for a
good-quality, mid-range, two-line SIP phone (with good

Does SIP limit to 3-way conference?
Hello all,
I'm in final testing stages and preparing training for a new Asterisk
rollout. I'm replacing a Cisco Call Manager system, and re-flashing
the 79x1 phones with SIP 8.5.2. With the SIP load and while in a call,
I use the "Confrn" softkey to invite other participants. I can add one
other participant endpoint into the conference, but no more.
I know I can (and

Odd MOH problem...
So I decided, for the formal asterisk rollout, to change over to less
commercially-infringing MOH than the prior admin had thrown on the
server. (plus: it was blown out and nasty sounding over the phones.
Ew.) I changed the files in /var/lib/asterisk/mohmp3 to something else
(can't dig up the link, but it was from the voip-info wiki). My

howto mount a scsi tape drive?
Hi,
after installing centos 4.2 I've noticed that my internal Seagate scsi DAT
72GB tape drive hasn't been recognised in /media or doesn't show up in gnome
when putting in a tape.
Do I need to edit fstab first or load additional modules in the kernel
during startup?
regards, Geert
