Help with aggregate syntax for a multi-column function please.
Dear R-experts: I am using a function called AUC whose arguments are data, time, id, and dv. data is the name of the dataframe, time is the independent variable column name, id is the subject id and dv is the dependent variable. The function computes area under the curve by trapezoidal rule, for each subject id. I would like to embed this in aggregate to further subset by each

Sharing of Libraries (S+ and R)
Hi, Can anyone please advise if there is a neat way to 'share' libraries of (previously developed) S+ code with R? Specifically, within S+ I can use the attach(what = "<Chapter Directory>", pos = 2) command, to retrieve previously developed functions and variables to position 2 in the search list. [Some may be intentionally masked by what's in the current working

regexp capturing group in R
Hello, Newbie question: how do you capture groups in a regexp in R? Let's say I have txt="blah blah start=20080101 end=20090224". I'd like to get the two dates start and end. In Perl, one would say: my ($start,$end) = ($txt =~ /start=(\d{8}).*end=(\d{8})/); I've tried: txt <- "blah blah start=20080101 end=20090224" m <-

Manipulate Data (with regular expressions)
Dear Everyone, I try to automatically manipulate the data of a variable (class = factor) like x 220 220a 221 221b B221 Into two variables (class = numeric) like x y 220 0 220 1 221 0 221 1 221 1 y has to carry the information about the class (number or string) of the former x-Variable. I could do it by hand like x[x == "220a"] <- 220

Asterisk question
Any idea how to read an external file, grab some stuff and push it back into an Asterisk variable? I can do it the other way with: system(echo "${UNIQUEID} =>" >> /home/ast/curr_calls) but I'm a bit stumped on how to go the other way around.... much thanks, Paul Hales

invert argument in grep
Hello, What about an `invert` argument in grep, to return elements that are *not* matching a regular expression : R> grep("pink", colors(), invert = TRUE, value = TRUE) would essentially return the same as : R> colors() [ - grep("pink", colors()) ] I'm attaching the files that I modified (against today's tarball) for that purpose. Cheers, Romain --

Looking for equivalent for "strstr"
Friends This is an elementary question. Is there is a built in R function for finding a sub-string in another string? Like strstr in C. I can easily roll my own, but if there is a built in that is one less thing I can do wrong! cheers Worik [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

na.exclude equivalent
Is there an R equivalent to the na.action "na.exclude" in S+ for use in lm()? My basic problem is that when using resid() to grab the residuals from an lm object, I would like place holders for the missing values caused by NA's among the input variables. na.omit, of course, removes those observations entirely, so I don't know (without going to the trouble of matching up

keytab-lilo included with SYSLINUX is not up to date
Hi, I just noticed that the keytab-lilo utility included with SYSLINUX isn't up to date. It *is* a problem since the old version isn't compatible with current distributions like Debian ou Ubuntu (for example). Two options are offered to those who would like to use keytab-lilo in order to generate a file compatible with the KBDMAP directive : - use an up to date version of keytab-lilo

Two R sessions?
Hi R users, I am still a relatively new R user migrated from S+. I wonder in R how do you handle one difference between R and S+. S+ saves objects as different files in .Data directory while R saves all objects in a big file .RData. In S+, I can start two S+ sessions from the same directory and work simultaneously as long as new objects in the two sessions are not in the same names. This is

Is it possible to control R with S+?
I am currently using S+, which is my company standard econometric package, but unfortunately in some areas R has a lot more to offer in nice functions/libraries. Libraries I would like to use in S+. So I would like to use the R functions by calling on R from S+. For example export the data to be used in the R calculation in a temporary txt-file, and then S+ calls on R to start and read the txt
