HTTP Accept header wildcard breaks rails app
The thunderstone crawler (http://search.thunderstone.com/texis/
websearch/about.html) sends the folliowing HTTP accept header when
requesting pages
Accept: text/*, application/javascript, application/x-javascript
This results in a "Missing template" exception
text/* is valid. How do I tell my rails app to treat this as rhtml by
default instead of returning a 500?

Is mechanize thread safe?
Hello all,
I was just wondering if anybody knew whether mechanize is supposed to
be thread-safe or not? I didn''t really find any information about it
anywhere. I''ve been getting a strange error in protocol.rb when I run
a script that uses mechanize in a multi threaded fashion, but not with
a single thread.
I''m trying to write a spider that does multiple gets in

Preventing crawlers on link_to''s
My understanding was that using the :post=>true on a link_to() was supposed
to prevent search engine crawlers from triggering the link. However, this
does not seem to be working for me. Is there something else that I should
be/can be doing to accomplish this? Thanks.

New monitor weirdnesses (CentOS 5.11)
I just got a new monitor for my desktop system (the old one died after *many*
years of service). The new monitor is a high res 16:9 monitor, but the VESA video
driver insists on using 1024x768 (which was the resolution of the *old*
monitor). It does seem to detect higher, 16:9 resolutions but it is not using
them. I *think* I need to set some low-level video mode thing, but it has

Read Only Error Since 1.1?
Since I upgraded to 1.1, I am getting ''ActiveRecord::ReadOnlyRecord''
exceptions when trying to save a specific record.
I read up on ActiveRecord::Base.readonly? but I don''t think the condition
there (objects pulled in from a certain JOIN type) applies.
Here''s my code that is throwing the exception:

Controlling outbound bandwidth utilization by port
Among other things, I run an http server on my home DSL line
(6M/768kbit). The content includes several large image
galleries, and when certain crawlers hit our server w/
multiple large image uploads, we end up with large
ping time delays - sufficient to disrupt the kids''
on-line gaming. Attempts to control this with robots.txt
has not be very successful; Solaris IPQoS appears quite

R on 64-bit Windows
In the R for Windows FAQ (2.7.2) we have under 2.2:
"There is no specific version for x64 Windows, but the standard 32-bit
version works well enough."
Does that include the handling of huge data sets? What I have read in
other places indicates that the answer is "No". If so, will there be
a 64-bit version availble soon? When I websearch for 64-bit MinGW it
seems to exist out

Inserting weights in ltm package
Afternoon R help,
I want to run Rasch/IRT analyses using the ltm package, however, I am
using large scale survey data which requires weighting for accurate
results. I attempted to create a weighted object to insert into the
formulae of the ltm packages, however, the survey data only includes
30 replicate weights and a sampling weight. The svrepdesign requires
additional information such as

dev.off()
}

When I "sourced" it from R prompt, it quietly runs.

keep rsync from removing unfinished source files?
I have two machines, speed and mass. speed has a fast Internet
connection and is running a crawler which downloads a lot of files to
disk. mass has a lot of disk space. I want to move the files from
speed to mass after they're done downloading. Ideally, I'd just run:
$ rsync --remove-source-files speed:/var/crawldir .
but I worry that rsync will unlink a source file that hasn't
