Xapian pubmeet
Hi all,
A few of us have been discussing whether we should have a Xapian social
gathering of some kind. The current idea is meeting up in a pub in
London some time in autumn for drinks and food. However all of this
really depends on who might be able to come! It would be a chance to
meet other Xapian enthusiasts in an informal social setting and talk
about all things search-related (and

Lucene & Solr
Hi all,
I've been asked to prepare a comparison of Lucene/Solr and Xapian and
I'm trying to find some differences between the two. I'm not that
familiar with Lucene myself but I expect there are lots of people who
will have looked at both before ending up on this mailing lists.
Can anyone help? I'm looking for both differences between the two
systems and perhaps the reasons

Resource version in php_xapian.dll (windows)
(following my mail in xapian-discuss on 11.06)
I revisited my resource file and came up with a much simpler solution.
I'm now using the new version.h file (no need to duplicate version
strings) and add php-src to the include path given to rc.exe so I can
get the precise php version.
On my windows, the resulting dll appears as
"Xapian 1.0.1 bindings for PHP 5.2.2"

using gkermit with ssh (wishlist item)
I've been toying with the idea of using gkermit
over an ssh connection. As it stands, gkermit is essentially
featureless, a GPL kermit implementation that's enough to
get the Free software advocated off their backs. However,
since they want to continue to sell C-Kermit, it has all
the `useful' features, such as scripting, but more importantly
the ability to create a connection over

Win32/MSVC compilation for 0.9.8
Hiya,
I'm working on updating the MSVC build files for 0.9.8 (I've been
assuming that it's not worth doing this for 0.9.7).
One small problem; we can't build the remote backend in this environment
because the network code is waay too Unixy. Thus I'm getting a problem
building some of the tests; specifically test_serialisedoc1() and
test_serialiselength1() in

Build files for Win32 now include C# bindings
Hi all,
As per subject line. The new build files for 1.0.9 are available from
http://lemurconsulting.com/Products/Xapian/Overview.shtml
I've not tested these extensively, although they appear to pass the
smoke test, so any test reports would be welcome.

Wine and Remote Desktop??---- can't get mouse focus
hi all:
I copied over a windows MSTSC.exe and ran the remote desktop,
it gave me a small window for the IP address, then after the
successful connection, it shows me the (full screen ) XP login
interface, weir thing is, it loses mouse / keyboard focus now, so I
can't type in anything, neither can I close the window, the focus is
still on the background (gnome) desktop, so I could press

Xapian article in PHP Architect
Hi all,
I've just seen a great article in PHP Architect all about Xapian,
written by Marco Tabini who set up the BeebleX PHP search site.
"..This level of specialization has allowed the developers of Xapian to
implement some features that, for a lack of a more technical term, can
only be defined as "extremely cool":.....'
It's a great introduction to Xapian and how

I've just been sent a build file for the Ruby bindings, and have thus
produced a new set of build files, available from the usual place at

Huge thanks to Zsolt Sz. Sztup?k for his work on these.

Event - Cambridge, UK enterprise search meetup
Hi all,
We've started a local networking group - as this will cover Xapian, I
thought it might be of interest.
http://www.meetup.com/Enterprise-Search-Cambridge-UK/calendar/16034930/
As I imagine it's too far to travel for many of you, other groups are
linked from http://searchmeetups.com/ - some cover Xapian-related topics
(i.e. the London Open Source Search Social).

PHP bindings now work for Windows
Hi all,
Just to say we've now got the PHP bindings working on Windows (committed
to SVN-HEAD). It's not a particularly painless process, but it is possible.
Thanks to Daniel Menard for his support of this project.

More weirdness with PHP bindings
Hi all,
There's been a odd bug reported to us by Daniel Menard while working on
the PHP bindings:
"I then tried to run the dotest target...All tests passed, except the
one about get_matching_terms (smoketest.php line 94).
I added this line before the exit:
for ($i=0; $i<strlen($terms); $i++) echo $c=ord($terms[$i]), ' ',
($c>31?$terms[$i]:''), "\n";

Fixes for omega under Windows
Hi all,
There's been a lot of changes to Omega recently and the Windows build
wasn't working; I've attached a patch which should fix this. It's mainly
a lot of changes to use the "safe..." versions of header files.
Cheers

Patch for database code
Hi all,
Attached is a simple patch for Flint and Quartz; Visual C++ complains if
you try and define arrays with non-constant size.
