4.4 yum update problem
On one of my machines yum hung up while installing the updates and
could not be interrupted or killed. I rebooted the machine the next
day, but now a 'yum update' reports:

mdadm --create on Centos5?
Is there some new trick to making raid devices on Centos5?
# mdadm --create /dev/md3 --level=1 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdc1
mdadm: error opening /dev/md3: No such file or directory
I thought that worked on earlier versions. Do I have to do something
udev related first?

Fontconfig warning with X11() on MAC OS X 10.4
I posted previously about problems with X11() on my MAC using R 2.8.1 .
After installing the securilty update for Tiger this morning, X11() now
works from an xterm :-)
However, I receive the following warnings with any plotting command using
the default X11 settings.
Fontconfig warning: no <cachedir> elements found. Check configuration.

change md uuid?
I sometimes clone working machines by separating RAID1 mirrors and
letting each re-sync with a new partner in different machines. What
will happen if a mismatched pair of these drives ever end up together in
the same machine? If there is any chance that they would automatically
be paired, is there a way to change the uuid when moving to a new
machine so that wouldn't happen?

keep /boot, copy / from elsewhere?
How much is likely to break if you keep a locally installed /boot
partition with it's anaconda-crafted module set in the initrd, but wipe
and completely replace / and any other partitions with a copy from a
machine that has somewhat different hardware? Assume both machines are
running the same kernel versions and the change is done while running
from the rescue CD or other livecd boot.

fontconfig-2.1.93 considered more harmful
There is an ongoing thread "fontconfig-2.1.92 considered harmful" on -CURRENT.
Because I have not moved to -CURRENT, I post this to -STABLE.
Since I upgraded to fontconfig-2.1.93 (on Apr 14) a lot of ports start to
complain a lot of "Cannot fork: Resource temporarily unavailable" errors.
What resource ? I inserted top into my ports build script to notice that

I have been hacking on an R 2.15 build on an Ubuntu 10.4 box, and I do
not know how to debug R's error message regarding cairo "working".
Configuration completes without the expected additional capability (cairo)

wine-20050211 on SuSE 9.2
I am trying to install wine-20050211 on my second system, which runs
SuSE 9.2. After much faffing around I finally managed to download and
install bison, which allowed ./config to complete. A warning at the end
advised me to install xlib-devel or xfree86-devel. Googling around I
found the RPM for XFree86-devel for SuSE 9.1 so I downloaded it and
started to install it. Unfortunately, a

[fdo] Time to kill the fontconfig wiki?
Looking at http://www.fontconfig.org/wiki/TitleIndex I see it's around
99.9% pure spam. Other than the front page, virtually everything else
is the moin-moin boilerplate or the hundreds of pages of spam. Even the
Recent Changes & Find Page links have been overwritten by spammers hundreds
of times, with the spammers fighting each other to crap on it most recently.

Installing R on a machine with 64-bit Opteron processors
I have been tasked with installing statistical and other data
analysis applications on a new Sun Fire X4600 M2 x64 server that came
equipped with eight AMD dual core Opteronn 64-bit processors. It is
running the 64-bit version of Suse Linux 9.
I have read through the installation docs, and I guess I don't
understand what to do, or even how to identify which version, if any,

CairoPDF, Fonts, and Windows 7
Hi All:
I have some basic questions about Cairo graphics engine. I'm trying to use the Cairo package to produce PDF output, mainly because I perceive it to be easy to use with a wide variety of fonts.
But right now, I'm stuck trying to figure out what fonts are available to be used with Cairo, specifically the CairoPDF function. I've been able to successfully produce some test PDFs
