GSoC proposals soon due & student handbook
Hi everyone,
As we're closing in on the time when proposals need to be written and
handed in, I'd like to point out the great student guide to GSoC:
https://web.archive.org/web/20150315023159/http://en.flossmanuals.net/GSoCStudentGuide/#
As you may notice this points to Archive.org, that is because
flossmanuals seems to be currently down. That's an additional reason why

Outlier statistics question
I have a statistical question.
The data sets I am working with are right-skewed so I have been
plotting the log transformations of my data. I am using a Grubbs Test
to detect outliers in the data, but I get different outcomes depending
on whether I run the test on the original data or the log(data). Here
is one of the problematic sets:

Appending many different and separate Excel files using R
Dear all,
Good day!
I have a problem in reading Excel files in R and appending them to each other. Suppose we have several Excel files in a directory with headers and want to use R to append them in a single file with an additional variable in the final file indicating from which files the data come from.
As I have many Excel files and their sizes are very big I should write a loop in R to do

smbd processes 99% cpu and end-user locks up
Still having a situation, in particular with Microsoft Office products
(Excel, MS Word, etc), wherein a user locks up while saving a file.
The scenario goes as follows:
user opens up a file (excel document, word document, etc), user changes
file, user hits save, user hangs...
`top` reports an smbd belonging to user locked in some sort of loop
causing 99% cpu utilization.

Appending many different and separate Excel files using R
Hello,
This is the sort of question that could interess others, so you should
have CCed it to the list.
As for the question, from the package vignette, section 3.3.6:
"writeWorksheetToFile() is a wrapper function, calling loadWorkbook(),
createSheet() and saveWorkbook()
functions subsequently. It therefore allows for writing data into
worksheets of an Excel file in one call."

SELinux - way of the future or good idea but !!!
Hi,
total newbie on CentOS. Just firing up an install of 5.5 on a development webserver. Installed Webmin, Awstats, PHPMyAdmin and Drupal successfully. Yet to work on Sendmail and Samba. SELinux in enforcing mode, reporting "SELinux preventing ifconfig (ifconfig_t) "read write" to /var/webminsessiondb.pag (var_t)".
Googled the error message without real success in finding fix

Confused about multiple imputation with rms or Hmisc packages
Hello,
I'm working on a Cox Proportional Hazards model for a cancer data set that has missing values for the categorical variable "Grade" in less than 10% of the observations. I'm not a statistician, but based on my readings of Frank Harrell's book it seems to be a candidate for using multiple imputation technique(s). I understand the concepts behind imputation, but using

Building a web risk calculator based on Cox PH--definitive method for calculating probability?
Hello all,
I am a medical student and as a capstone for my summer research project I am
going to create a simple online web "calculator" for users to input their
relevant data, and a probability of relapse within 5 years will be computed
and returned based on the Cox PH model I have developed.
The issue I'm having is finding a definitive method/function to feed the
