new package SamplingStrata
Dear R users,
I would like to announce that on the CRAN is now available a new package (SamplingStrata version 0.9) for the optimal stratification of sampling frames.
This package offers an approach for the determination of the best stratification of a sampling frame, the one that ensures the minimum sample size under the condition to satisfy precision constraints in a multivariate and

SDMTools package - calculating overlap?
Dear R users,
Any idea of how to calculate an area of an overlap between two functions? The only R build in function that I found is I Similarity Statistic for Quantifying Niche Overlap and I am really not sure if this function is producing exactly what I am interested in since I was plotting functions and often got confused results (for example: got high value for the overlap of one pair and low

Evaluating R. I need to open "a dataset".
Hello,
Our Statistics Group is evaluating the use of R for the elaboration of

a survey sample.
I need to open "a dataset". Currently I've understood that I've to

Another cygwin/rsync question
Hi, Been using rsync for many years but I'm stuck with this problem.
I'ts a simplistic backup using rsync from a Windows 2k3 machine to a
Linux box out on the 'net, using pre-shared ssh keys. In this case I'm
saving, files belonging to various users, using the administrator
account on the windows machine and the destination is a normal user
account and its home file area.

SQL bug in acts_as_taggable
Hi,
excuse me if this is off-topic and feel free to ingore it in case.
I''m using acts_as_taggable (the gem version) and found what to me
looks like a bug in this code from the method tags_count:
sql = "SELECT #{t}.#{t_pk} AS id, #{t}.name AS name, COUNT
(*) AS count
FROM #{jt}, #{o}, #{t} WHERE #{jt}.#{t_fk} = #{t}.#{t_pk}
AND #{jt}.#{o_fk} =

Convert json data to an r dataframe
Hello to everybody,
I need to convert a json dataset in an R dataframe.
I suppose that I'd need to use rjson or rjsonio package.
The json dataset is:
http://apistat.istat.it/?q=getdatajson&dataset=DCIS_POPSTRBIL&dim=1,0,0,0&lang=1&tr=&te=
It would be nice if someone can help me to create a function like the one

[Announcement] Google: Evil or Not?
"Google: Evil or Not?" is my first Rails webapp and I''ve just made it

Do you still believe the ?Do no evil? Google mantra? Do you think
Google Book Search, the AOL deal, and Larry and Sergey?s 767 point to

Tools/mechanisms for the management of access permissions in big filebased datasets
Hello,
we are currently managing access permissions through classical
user-group-others permissions on a multi-petabyte directory tree with
partially very deep and broad directories. Projects are represented by
directory trees and mapped through GIDs. Lately we had lots of
"singular" permission request (one single user needs access to a single
dataset but should not be able to

Tools/mechanisms for the management of access permissions in big filebased datasets
Thank you. Basically our problem are not the ACLs or their support per
se, but that we have to manage a huge number of individual ACLS (several
hundred users in more than hundred projects) in multi-petabyte
filesystem and still have to keep overview and control. Our problem is
more the management side. Effectively we are looking for a tool that
helps us manage these permissions and we

REmove level with zero observations
If I have a column with 2 levels, but one level has no remaining
observations. Can I remove the level?
Had intended to do it as listed below, but soon realized that even though
there are no observations, the level is still there.
For instance
summary(dbs3.train.sans.influential.obs$HAC)
yields
0 ,1
4685,0
nlevels(dbs3.train.sans.influential.obs$HAC)
yields
[1] 2

Sendmail restriction
Hi,
I'm looking for a way, in sendmail, to set access rule, saying:
Accept messages for domain.com only from this IP address.
I did some research yesterday, but could only find a way to restrict by
IP for all domains managed by sendmail.
Any ideas?

Polycom 330 beep on new VM
Hi,
I have a Polycom 330 that emits a beep every 30s or so when there is a
message waiting. Is there a way to disable that? It is pretty annoying.
