How to produce rainfall maps
Fwiw the engine behind geom_raster needs explicit observation-per-row form
for input (with no structural normalization), so conversion to points is
perfectly proper here, albeit confusing in context. (It's closer to what
graphics devices actually use ultimately, but the expansion is laid out
very early in ggplot2 because there's no standard for intermediate forms.)

legend position
Hi all.
I'm ploting a raster and I can't find the proper way to move the legend. For example,
r = raster(system.file("external/test.grd", package="raster"))plot(r)
How can I put the legend at the desired position?
Thank in advance,Phil

How to produce rainfall maps
Thank you Sarah and Mike for your explanations.
My final objective is to produce maps (png image or any kind of extension I can import in LaTeX) where rainfall data are interpolated, using the Inverse Distance method or Kriging.
My input file (pointfile.csv in the reported example) reports the station code, lat and long of the meteorological station and the rainfall value (which might be the

rasterize SpatialPolygon object using a RasterBrick object
I am trying to rasterize a SpatialPolygon object by a RasterBrick object.
The documentation of the raster::rasterize function explicitly says this is
allowed. Here's what I am doing
# load the raster package
library("raster")
# create a raster brick object using the example from the brick
function documentation

How to produce rainfall maps
Hi,
You might get more help from the R-sig-geo list, which is devoted to
spatial topics.
However.
The *.asc file is an ArcGIS raster export format. You should use
whatever the appropriate import commands are for your own gridded
rainfall data. If you have a different format, you might or might not
be able to import it directly with raster.
?raster will tell you more about the kinds of formats

How to produce rainfall maps
Dear R users,
I need to produce rainfall maps using R.
I know that this is possible, I looked though the web, I found the example below reported (the author is Andrew Tredennick).
I would ask you if this is the most performing way to make rainfall maps; if yes would someone be able to give me an example of how file.asc and pointfile.csv should be? If no would somebody please show me another way

Fault geology xyz to raster
Hi,
I have a 3-d geology problem. I have an xyz fault data set. I am able to
view the data set in R using plot3-d but cannot create a raster from it. I
need to create a raster and export so that it can be read in arcscene. Can
anybody help?
Thanks

converting raster image
Dear R users,
I was wondering how I can convert a raster image (that made R through interpolation) into an ascii or csv format?
this is the last line of my command
p <- interpolate(r, tpsfit)
So p is my raster file which I want to convert into ascii or csv
Many thanks

random sample from list
random selection of cells in raster based on distance from xy locations
Hi,
I am trying to sample a raster for random cells that occur within a
specific distance of point locations. I have successfully found multiple
ways of doing this but have memory issues with very large datasets. To
overcome this problem I am working with lists. I am now stuck on how to
randomlly sample the correct elements

Edges and Rasters
Hi everyone!
I would like to draw a line surrounding my raster, with i want it in black,
and i don't know if its possible to change the colour.
A simple example is:
r <- raster(nrow=30, ncol=30, xmn=0)
r[]<-NA
r[393:409]<-99
r[423:439]<-99
r[453:455]<-99
r[456:460]<-30
r[461:469]<-99
r[483:499]<-99
r[513:529]<-99

Patch: fix segfault from empty raster
Hi,
A colleague recently came across an R crash, which I can boil down to
the following, running under Rgui on Windows 7:
library(ggplot2)
ggplot(data.frame(x=1, y=1, z=4.7), aes(x, y, z=z)) + stat_summary2d()
This reliably causes a segmentation fault. sessionInfo() below.
What's happening is that (for reasons which I'll discuss with the
ggplot2 developers) the 'colorbar'

How can I map numbers to colours with raster?
This code will read binary file and display it as a map. may problem is that
this code is using a continuous colour scheme, even though I have discrete
data (which is a classification scheme). How can I map numbers to colours
with raster? Please

conne <- file("C:\\lai.bin", "rb")
sd<- readBin(conne, integer(), size=1, n=360*720, signed=F)

How to prevent inclusion of intercept in lme with interaction
Dear friends of lme,
After so many year with lme, I feel ashamed that I cannot get this to work.
Maybe it's a syntax problem, but possibly a lack of understanding.
We have growth curves of new dental bone that can well be modeled by a
linear growth curve, for two different treatments and several subjects as
random parameter. By definition, newbone is zero at t=0, so I tried to force

Extracting xy from raster based on raster value
I have a raster (which I called glc), which I read
into R as a raster with "raster.create.from.file" from the raster package (R-forge). Values in glc range between 1 and 27 (whole numbers only). I'd like to extract all cells with a value of 1 to create
a new raster with only the cells that have a value of 1, or to extract
the xy values of all raster cells with a value of 1. Could you

Volume of polygon
Hi,
As already mentioned, this is a great topic for R-sig-geo, where you'd
probably get specialist answers like the lake morphology package
https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/lakemorpho/index.html which is
explicitly designed for this kind of question.

str() on raster objects fails for certain dimensions
Hi,
str() on raster objects fails for certain dimensions. For example:

'raster' chr [1, 1:100] "#000000" "#000000" "#000000" "#000000" ...

This seems to do with how str() and

Get contour of a map
Hello everybody,
I search a function which returns the contour of map with levels like contourLines, but I would like this function return the border of the map too, because the function contourLines cannot consider the corner of the map and it is not adapted to fill polygon after that.
Thanks in advance

Plot.raster hides the axis layer
Hi all,
I am trying to plot a raster object (I can explain why but the point is that it would be a raster objeƧt)..
I have selected a small code to show you exactly the problem
require(raster)
test<-matrix(data=runif(10000),nrow=100)
m<-raster(test)
plot(m,axes="FALSE")
axis(1,at=c(0,1),labels=c("a","b")) # THIS DOES NOT CHANGE THE INVISIBLE AXIS WHILE

Raster manipulation in R
Hello everyone in the forum
For introducing myself I would say I have a basic knowledge of R.
Now I am intended to implement a flood algorithm using R. I have some MatLab
experience doing these, and as an example to explain more or less what I
want, I have a m code to calculate the slope from a Digital elevation model:
slope=zeros(row,col);
for i=2:row-1
for j=2:col-1

How to make a raster image in R from my own data set
Hi R-user,
I was trying to make a raster map with WGS84 projection in R, but I could not make it. I found one data set in Google that data is almost the same format as of mine. I wanted to make a raster map of temperature with 1 degree spatial resolution for the global scale.
I could make it in GIS software but I do have many variables (to be many raster images) and ultimately I am importing them
