building in AIXV5.3 using the IBM C for AIX compiler V6.0
What fun. I don't often stoke up the boiler and actually compile open-source code, but here I am at the beginning of just such a joyous and wondrous adventure. I'm running the latest level of AIX (V5.3...V4.3 has been obsolete for at least, what, 5 years) and using the IBM compiler (xlc is similarly obsolete, from back when the compiler came with the O/S...oh, for the halcyon days of

Value at Risk using a volatility model?
Hi, I want to calculate the Value at Risk with using some distirbutions and a volatility model. I use the following data(http://uploadeasy.net/upload/cdm3n.rar) which are losses (negative returns) of a company of approx. the last 10 years. So I want to calculated the Value at Risk, this is nothing else than the quantile. Since I have losses I consider the right tail of the distribution. Consider

search acts_as_taggable for multiple tags
Hey...I''m trying to search a Model that uses acts_as_taggable for multiple tags. I''d like to pass in a search string containing a space delimited tags names (i.e. "tag1 tag2") and return the objects that have been tagged by either one of those. Thanks! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:

Catching a list of variables with a Controller
Hi All, I have been learning some ruby and some Camping at the same time by implementing a little webapp to track expenses (one man''s blog...) that includes the ability to tag entries with 1 or more tags. I wanted to offer the possibility to narrow the view of expenses by adding tags to a filter (this works) and I also wanted this filter to be reflected in the URL. Like so: normal URL:

Possible memory leak in loop.
I was trying to use memory.size() to determine whether a code loop I am executing created a memory leak, since one replicate of the simulation takes 670.98 seconds according to proc.time(), while 5 replicates takes 170762 seconds. So I set it up as: memA <- memory.size() looping code... memB <- memory.size() memA returns as 9.3, and memB returns 11.3. I'm not familiar with

cut a vector in equal parts
Hi, I would like to cut a vector of values in parts. Each part should have an equal number of elements. for example: x <- (rnorm(500)^2) now I want 5 vectors each with 100 elements. The first vector should include the 100 lowest values of x and so on (so that the fifth vector contains the 100 highest values of x). thanks for any help!

"reverse" quantile function
It would depend on which one of the 9 quantile definitions you are using. The discontinuous ones aren't invertible, and the continuous ones won't be either, if there are ties in the data. This said, it should just be a matter of setting up the inverse of a piecewise linear function. To set ideas, try x <- rnorm(5) curve(quantile(x,p), xname="p") The breakpoints for the

stats::line() does not produce correct Tukey line when n mod 6 is 2 or 3
A usually trustworthy R correspondent posted a pure R implementation on SO at some point in his lost youth: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/3224731/john-tukey-median-median-or-resistant-line-statistical-test-for-r-and-line This one does indeed generate the line of identity for the (1:9, 1:9) case, so I do suspect that we have a genuine scr*wup in line(). Notice, incidentally, that >

stats::line() does not produce correct Tukey line when n mod 6 is 2 or 3
Seriously, if a method gives a wrong result, it's wrong. line() does NOT implement the algorithm of Tukey, even not after the patch. We're not discussing Excel here, are we? The method of Tukey is rather clear, and it is NOT using the default quantile definition from the quantile function. Actually, it doesn't even use quantiles to define the groups. It just says that the groups

i am having problem running my own data. yesterday it was working just fine. today it is not. this is the code i was using as an example to follow. this code ALSO worked just fine yesterday, and is no longer working at all. i suspect it is a problem with either my computer or the software, at this point. if THIS won't even run.... something is wrong. i can assure you this isn't

Sure I will split it and put it in two patches. Give me few hours. I need to test those patches. R-beta: quantile
I do: x<-rnorm(1000) quantile(x,c(.025,.975)) 2% 98% -1.844753 1.931762 Since I want to find a 95% confidence interval, I take the .025 and .975 quantiles. HOWEVER R says I have the 2% (not 2.5%) and 98% (not 97.5%) points. Is it just rounding the printed 2% and 98%, or is it REALLY finding .02 and .98 points instead of .025 and .975? Thanks for any help. Bill Simpson

how to obtain the CPU time of my program
Dear R users and experts, I am current running a program (a series of commands) in R. such as: A <- as.matrix(read.table("C:/LP.txt")); a=which(memb==q); b=a; B=as.matrix(A[a,b]) LS=sum(B)/2; TL=sum(A)/2 i<-c(1:NN); D=sum(A[a,i]); how can i obtain the CPU time used for these commands ? I have seen the system.time function but i am not sure how to use it. Could anyone help

Plotting hclust with lot of objects
Hi! I am newbee to R and I am facing the problem in plotting the dedrogram with lot of objects. The lines and labels are overlapped very badly, and writing the graphic to postscript and zooming there is not helping either. I tried cut.dendrogram method, but getting the error that it doesn't exist even though I get the man pages for it. I would not find any solution in web as well, and I
