dovecot local indexes and multiple servers
Hi,
I've been testing mdbox with local indexes on our nfs based directors +
multiple imap/lda/pop3 server setup. The performance is noticeably
better than maildir with indexes on nfs, so I'd like to make this work.
About the possible direction to other servers the wiki says that it will
create a new index 'on the fly'. That is true, but after the index is
recreated,

Question about indexes and maildir/sdbox/mdbox
Hello
We are now running dovecot 2.0.9 with indexes in a ram disk and
maildir storage in a test system. We have the following questions:
- If there is a power outage / kernel crash, we will lose the
content of ramdisk. We have tested that indexes are regenerated when a
user logs in via imap, so e-mail access will be "slower" after a power
outage / kernel crash, but

Not backing up cache files
I am using mdbox for dovecot storage.
I wonder if I could skip "dovecot.index.cache" files and, in general,
"*.cache" files when doing mail backup. Those files are big and change
frequently. What I feel from reading documentation [1][2] is that they
could be dropped in the backups, to be recreated on the fly if needed.
But I would like expert confirmation.

corrupted indexes rebuilding over and over
Hi,
On saturday one of our dovecot machines had an OOPS, and we had to
powercycle it. When it came up, it did a filesystem fsck (ext4) and
fixed a couple things, but nothing in lost+found.
Now, about 50 users have a problem where their indexes are
corrupted. Dovecot tries to fix them, but for some reason it is
failing. The users are seeing their mails duplicated and they cannot
delete mails. I

Moving from MBOX to Maildir or DBox ?
Hello
Actually we use MBOX format for all our IMAP access but users complain
they cannot create subfolders in imap folders, of course they cannot
because of MBOX format ...
I need gurus advices on changing mailbox format
Maildir of Dbox ?
What would be the safest way to go ?
Note : we extensively use Thunderbird here.
Thanks

Performance of Maildir vs sdbox/mdbox
Hi Guys,
I've been desperately trying to find some comparative performance
information about the different mailbox formats supported by Dovecot in
order to make an assessment on which format is right for our environment.
This is a brand new build, with customer mailboxes to be migrated in over
the course of 3-4 months.
Some details on our new environment:
* Approximately 1.6M+

dovecot and glusterfs
Hi,
I did some experiments with dovecot on a glusterfs on the active nodes without
a director. So I had concurrent access to the files.
With the help of the available documentation about NFS and fcntl locks I
managed to find out the following:
With the plain mbox format dovecot seems to apply and to honor the fcntl
locks. But since this format is not used any more in real setups, it is

migrate Maildir to mdbox
Silly question?
Which is preferred? MailDir or Mbox? (directory vs flat file)
How would you do this when migrating from an old server to a new one?
Thx

dovecot, mdbox and indexes
Hello everybody,
We are updating our old dovecot 1.1 servers to 2.0. We have a farm os
servers, with users in nfs filesystems and indexes in local fs. Mail is
stored in maildir format. We don't warrant that a user is always
directed to the same server, although our load balancer sends all
request from one IP to the same server (during a session time with a
inactivity timeout). This is

Questiosn about dbox
Hello
I have read carefully about dbox
(/http://wiki2.dovecot.org/MailboxFormat/dbox/) and I have some questions:
- One of the main advantages (speed wise) of dbox over maildir is
that index files are the only storage for message flags and keywords.
What happens when we want to recover some messages from backup? With
maildir we can rebuild message indexes, but I am not sure about

making a plugin encrypt index data
Hello,
I'm encrypting mail on disk using a plugin[0], but the index files are
not encrypted (specifically the dovecot.index.cache can be read).
I want to do is encrypt index on disk, so I'm looking for how a plugin
can achieve that by hooking into the right locations. Is that easily
possible in a plugin?
I can turn off those indexes by passing INDEX=MEMORY, but that isn't
possible

mdbox + zlib performing less than just mdbox
I have test environment to determine what would be best settings. I have
been told that enabling zlib compression would be good to save iops on
storage. But doing the test now, I get worse results.

Documentation for "altpath" / "altmove" / ?"Alternate storage"
I was thinking about documentation for alternate storage.
We have a few mentions at:
http://wiki2.dovecot.org/MailboxFormat/dbox
http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Tools/Doveadm
http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Tools/Doveadm/Altmove
But I was thinking it would be helpful if there could be a page about
alternate storage.
I could write the page, but I currently have so many unknowns that I
think it would be

dovecot + cephfs - sdbox vs mdbox
I'm sending this message to both dovecot and ceph-users ML so please don't
mind if something seems too obvious for you.
Hi,
I have a question for both dovecot and ceph lists and below I'll explain
what's going on.
Regarding dbox format (https://wiki2.dovecot.org/MailboxFormat/dbox), when
using sdbox, a new file is stored for each email message.
When using mdbox, multiple

Non-dovecot user looking for feedback
I've been using UW-IMAPd for neigh on forever (at least since 2001). But, as it's basically stalled, and I'm about to update the hardware that is my mail server, I thought it was time to review existing open-source IMAP servers. Dovecot is the top three in my looking.
The other of the top three candidates, because I know of people who've used it, is Cyrus IMAP. So, I should
