Cannot build custom locale with utf-8 charset
I am trying, without success, to compile a custom locale for the utf-8
character set. I have issued this command:
localedef --no-archive -f UTF-8 -i
/usr/share/i18n/locales/en_CA at yyyy-mmm-dd en_CA at yyyy-mmm-dd.utf8
which produces the requisite files without reporting an error but
which none-the-less insists on using the iso-8859-1 charset:
LC_ALL=en_CA at yyyy-mm-dd locale charmap

Customizing locale settings in CentOS-4.5
I am trying to determine how to customize the date and time display of
system utilities and user programs using the locale settings. What I
really want is some sort of utility program that does the same thing for
CentOS as the Regions Settings Control Panel app. for MicroSoft Windows
accomplishes, but I have no hope of seeing that.
I have traced the login locale processing through /etc/profile

KVM guest fails to boot cleanly
I have a KVM vm running CentOS-6.8 on a host also running CentOS-6.8.
This instance is used for occasional development projects which
require segregation. Thus it is seldom accessed.
At some point in the recent past this guest developed an issue with
starting. Specifically these messages were found in the system log
files:

Where to get Sernet-Samba4 questions answered?
Not wanting to build Samba4 myself I spent some time searching for rpm
packages suitable for use on our CentOS-6.5 hosts. I discovered
http://enterprisesamba.com/ which provides rpms (sernet-samba-4.1.4-7) for
CentOS-6. However, I cannot find an online support community for this package
and requests for help made to the samba.org list have met with absolute
silence. Since my requests had to do

A Firefox search for plugins reports none found. I believe that this URL
refers to a Coldfusion script. Given the context I am working in I believe

MailScanner and SpamAssassin
I acknowledge beforehand that this list is not the primary place to
discuss these specific applications, but I am pressed for time and
many of you have a great deal of experience with these two products.
We have MailScanner configured to use SpamAssassin and it works
exactly as we wanted. Up until now. I now need to allow messages
classified as spam to be delivered to a single mailbox. I

MPPE required, but kernel has no support.
Ok, on to new swamps.
I would like to enable PPTP on CentOS4 to accept connections from
clients running MicroSoft Win2K and XP pro from outside our firewall.
I am testing pptpd-1.2.3-0 and tells me that I need kernel support
for MPPE, which I suppose is MicroSoft's own form of PtoP encryption.
Is there a way of doing this without rebuilding the kernel? If so,
how?
Regards,
Jim

Remote archiving with tar over ssh
I am trying to create a one line command that will:
1. Find all files ending in .conf
2. tar these over ssh to a remote server.
I have reached this point in my trials.
a. I can find the files.
b. I can tar them locally.
c. I can get a simple fileset tar'ed to a remote server over ssh
using tar -zvcf - /some/fileset | ssh host.domain.tld "cat >
/backup/tarfile.tar.gz
d. I cannot

Thank you very much, this worked. I have two supplementary
questions. First, what is the significance of the $() construct in
bash and how does it interact with tar? Does it take the place of

ISO mag card encoding and writing
We have a potential requirement to produce a limited number of embossed PVC
cards with magnetic encoding for an internal project. We are considering
obtaining a read/write device (likely USB) suitable for encoding HICO magnetic
stripes. Has anyone here any experience with suitable hardware and software
that runs on CentOS-6? If so then what was used and what problems were
encountered getting

Making a bootable Win7 DVD from an ISO
I would like to create a bootable DVD containing Win7 from an official
Microsoft ISO that I have on a CentOS-6.5 box. Is this even possible? If so
then how is it done using CentOS?
If I must create a Win7 repair disk on a Windows machine then this will be
possible, but somewhat logistically challenging. I would much rather just get
it done with the tools I have to hand.

Postgreql 8
Thank you for the information. We are starting a new project on a
dedicated development server. We therefore are looking at designing
for v.8 from the outset, anticipating that this will be the common
production version by the time the project is completed.
I had previously built an early v8 release of Postgresql on CentOS 4,
but that machine suffered a catastrophic disk failure and the

Need? php-iconv-?
I am experiencing a folder display problem in squirrelmail [SF issue
1471703] which is caused by messages containing a From: header whose data
string matches the following regexp:
=?iso-2022-jp?B?[.*]=?=[.*]
It has been suggested that I require php-iconv extentions to solve this
but I seem unable to locate a CentOS or RedHat-EL4 rpm providing this
package. Can anyone point me to a location

Centos Test repository
I would like to express my appreciation to the maintainers of the CentOS
distribution for the degree of thoroughness evidenced in the set up of the
test repository at http://dev.centos.org. I was casting around for how to
configure my yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo to handle a few packages that I must
obtain from the test area (firefox, which seems to have moved since yesterday,
and postgresql). I

Because of a folder display problem caused by certain character encodings used

be a corresponding squirrelmail-i18n rpm available in any of the repositories

Gnome Desktop Screensaver Security Lock Override?
We deployed our first CentOS-4 based workstation this past spring to see
if we can conveniently replace all, or at least most, of our MS-Win based
user systems with Linux boxes instead. Generally this trial unit has
proved a success but there is one lingering problem that I cannot seem to
find a straight-forward answer to: Is there an administrator override to a

CentOS-4.3 and PHP PostgreSQL extension.
I need to enable pg support on one of my CentOS servers. I know nothing about
PHP but DRUPAL requires a DB backend and we have standardized on pg rather
than mysql. The PHP.net page devoted to the subject of pg says that to enable
pg support PHP must be built with the flag "--with-pgsql[=DIR]" and that the
required support extension must be loaded via the /etc/php.ini file with the
