Am I being to paranoid?
Hi All, I want to know thoughts on if I am being to paranoid/security conscious. CentOS 5.6, Apache, MySQL, running an Firewall in front of everything and obviously the built-in firewall on the box. I have ssh on a different port and starting to use Keys instead of password authentication. I host an intensive website and I am getting about 150 unique visitors per day. What I am seeing is

"self-awareness" from a definition?
Looking at Puppet for a new installation. Wondering about the following capability: Say I have a reference to some definition, where I call out a relationship: silo( webservers => "server1", databaseservers => "server2" ); (sorry if syntax is incorrect). Is it possible for the definition of this to trigger "server1" to be in a "webservers"

limiting number of login attempts from same ip
Hello, is it possible to limit the number of pop3 (or imap) login attempts from one IP with dovecot to stop attackers? We recently had an attack from one IP-address lasting 50 minutes that tried 50000 pop3-logins with guessed users and passwords. I know about Fail2Ban but really would prefer an easy to configure solution inside of dovecot. Dovecot has this anvil daemon, can it be used

SQL config error
Currently using 2.0.12, configured the auth-sql.conf to look like this for password lookups (doing smtp auth with postfix, so I am not actually running pop or imap, just auth): passdb { driver = sql connect = host=server.net dbname=passwd user=sqluser password='password' default_pass_scheme = CRYPT password_query = SELECT CONCAT(username,'@domain.net') as user, pw as

Converting from qpopper mbox to dovecot maildir
We have an older mail server using qpopper and the mbox format which we need to update to dovecot and maildir format. I have read through the docs on migrating from mbox to maildir, as well as a few nuggets on how to migrate from qpopper to dovecot, and I was wondering if I could get some suggestions on best practices for this specific migration. Would the built in dovecot conversion plugin be a

MySQL dict issues
Testing using the mysql dict for quota storage (dovecot-2.0.12-2_127.el5), and ran into a couple issues. First is a permissions issue: dovecot: lmtp(26786, dude at test.tld): Error: net_connect_unix(/var/run/dovecot/dict) failed: Permission denied (euid=5000(<unknown>) egid=5000(<unknown>) missing +r perm: /var/run/dovecot/dict, euid is not dir owner) The file

problems connecting to the Problems connecting to mysql
Hi, I'm trying to setup a mailserver running postfix and dovecot with mysql as database backend. Postfix is already running and delivers mails just fine. Unfortunately, dovecot has great problems connecting to the database (using username + password). Found that two threads about the same issue but none of them solves the problem http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2005-April/006770.html

n00b here -- pop email deletion
I'm running Dovecot IMAP and POP3 on Debian. But it look's like it's keeping mail in the user's inbox on the server until it's deleted by the user. I thought POP servers deleted email as soon as it was downloaded, but apparently not, according to dovecot.org. Is there something in the Dovecot conf I can do to get rid of all this redundant crud? I see several conversations on

LDA vs LMTP index files
In the docs it states that LDA " ...takes mail from anMTAand delivers it to a user's mailbox, while keeping Dovecot index files up to date." I am wondering if LMTP also interacts with the Dovecot index files and keeps them up to date?

OT: Central sieve management
A bit off topic, but I was wondering if anyone here has a solution for centrally managing sieve for multiple users from a custom web application? We would like to implement pigeonhole sieve on our dovecot cluster, however we need to be able to access user?s sieve configurations from a central location for troubleshooting and support purposes.

zpool labelclear destroys GPT data
When i use zpool labelclear, it wipes the whole disk including gpt data. So the whole disk is empty and i need to create the gpt partitions again. Is this supposed to work like this? The man page suggests that it only wipes the ZFS metadata. zpool labelclear [-f] device Removes ZFS label information from the specified device. The device must not be part of an active pool

Denying authentication
Hello, I've been running dovecot for over 3 years now and it works with no problems. I have it setup so that it authenticates users against Active Directory via LDAP and so far no problems. What I would like to know is if there is any way that I could deny access for users trying to access email via cellphones or email clients outside the company. I can

Dovecot v2.0 wiki
I forked the wiki to http://wiki1.dovecot.org/ is the old docs for v1.x http://wiki2.dovecot.org/ is the new docs for v2.0 For now wiki.dovecot.org points to wiki1, but once v2.0 is released I'll change it to point to wiki2. I symlinked the user directory, so users should stay synced between the wikis. The main reason for wiki2 is to be able to describe Dovecot v2.0's actual behavior

Dovecot not processing through Sieve
Hello everyone, I'm fairly new to Dovecot, but I've gotten the majority of things working except for Sieve. I'm running Dovecot 1.2.9 coupled with Postfix and SpamAssassin all with a virtual domains setup. I am receiving mail and it is being processed by all the plugins that operate through Postfix. The quota configured in Dovecot appears to be working because my mail client shows
