Possible hint for "Clocksource tsc unstable" problem
Hello,
I made an interesting observation related to the "Clocksource tsc
unstable (delta = -2999660320319 ns)" problem. In the log of ntpd I found:

AD DC in a container: NTP
I’m currently trying to install a new (primary) AD DC in a Linux container. It seems to me that being in a container, the DC is easier to maintain and backup than on bare metal, and I prefer a container over a VM for performance reasons. If the container setup will prove to be too much of hassle, I’ll switch to a VM, though.
The first issue I’m facing is time synchronization. An container cannot

ntp server
I have a need to run a centos server CUT-off from any connected network.
So the NTP server that is running on this very small network cannot
connect to
any other site to do what NTP does.
however, I have devices on this small network that I wish to use the
centos server
as the time source and run ntpd.
However - it seems like ntpd server does not like to run this way.
There is a LONG delay

Time synchronization issues in Samba 4
Hi,
I configured my NTP server in samba 4 according to the article "
https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Time_Synchronisation" however I verified
that the NTP server does not respond to requests from Windows NTPv3
clients, it only responds to NTPv4.
Following my ntp.conf:
# /etc/ntp.conf, configuration for ntpd; see ntp.conf(5) for help
driftfile /var/lib/ntp/ntp.drift

Strange NTP problem
I have 30 identical Lenovo desktop systems running CentOS 5.1. On
one of those systems the clock is running slow (5+ minutes from
yesterday to this morning and another minute since this morning)
despite the fact that NTP is running on all of them and they all have
the exact same /etc/ntp.conf file (I compared the MD5 sums of that
file on all the systems). Here is the output of

Time just moved backwards error even with ntpd
Scenario: server PC abruptly switched off due to power cable problems
(an UPS cannot solve this issue), so during shutdown Linux was not
able to resinchronize the system clock. After a few hours the server
come back on, Linux booted and the services (ntpd, dovecot and many
others) started
But the system clock was 45 minutes ahead, so:

Why the command 'service ntpd stop' cause the time reversed?
A shell script is deployed to synchronize time, the script is invoked hourly by crontab, and its content is as follows:
#!/bin/bash
service ntpd stop
ntpdate 192.168.0.191 #it's a valid ntpd server in LAN
service ntpd start
chkconfig ntpd on
Inspected the Linux log(Centos6.4 /var/log/messages), found the following fragment:

Correct NTP Settings for Samba 4.0.6?
Hello,
I recently compiled Samba 4.0.6 (as an AD DC) and am running it on Ubuntu 12.04.
I followed the instructions on the Samba wiki (https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Configure_NTP)
for how to configure ntp, however the domain clients are rejecting the DCs as
being acceptable time sources. Below is my ntp.conf:
server 127.127.1.0
fudge 127.127.1.0 stratum 10
server 0.pool.ntp.org iburst

NTP
Greets!
Ok. I'm looking at a client that needs to keep their server time close
as reasonably possible (within a minute) of the actual time of day.
I've installed the RPM for NTP and I'm looking for tips on what the
simplest setup should be, ie:
What server(s) should I be using for sync?
Should I just run it from a cron every 20 minutes or so?
thx.

Fwd: Re: Dotlock dovecot-uidlist errors / NFS / High Load
Stan,
Thanks for the reply. In our case we have actually already done most of
the work you suggested to no avail. We had rebuilt two new ntp servers
that sync against two stratum 1 sources, and all our nfs clients,
regardless of using dovecot, sync to those two machines. You bring up the
difference between bare metal and hypervisor, and we are running these
machines on vmware 4.0. All the

ntpd stuck on stratum 16 = not synced
Maybe there's an ntp expert out there who can help me with this. I have an NTP server serving our local network. It is
set up to use pool.ntp.org servers for it's upstream sync. ntpq -p reveals that the server is stuck on stratum 16,
which I understand means "not synced". The clients are unable to sync with my local server because of this. Here's the
output of ntpq -p

HOWTO Stratum 1 NTP server under CentOS 7
Hello everyone,
If anyone is interested, I have created a HOWTO
on running a Motorola GPS receiver connected to
a CentOS 7 box via serial port (com1),
with 1PPS over DCD.
The trick here is that CentOS 7 uses systemd
and setup was a bit different. Anyway,
everything works.
The result is a highly accurate NTP server, Stratum 1.
Here is the documentation.

Time delaying (or time lagging)
Hello everyone,
I have problem with time delaying on my CentOS powered server. I have tried
to set time in BIOS and in OS (with saving time to BIOS), but time still
delaying, so after month is about five minutes delayed. In past I was using
this box with Windows and there wasn?t this time problem, but I cant
warrant, that there are no hardware issues. So I was decided, that easiest
way to fix

HOWTO Stratum 1 NTP server under CentOS 7
Alexander,
First off, CentOS7 came with cronyd. Which was very annoying
because when I tried to remove it, it had 2 prereqs:
anaconda
initial-setup
Now, I don't know why the setup program kept these
2 around. I think CentOS7 needs a bit growing up.
Anyway, I disabled chrony:
systemctl disable time-sync
systemctl stop time-sync
Then I installed ntp. However, when I started it
it seems that

NTP and hardware clock
Hi,
I had the following problem today. Because of a misconfigured
network switch one system suddenly didn't have any network.
After a reboot (with the network still unavailable) NTPD refused to start.
Most likely because the initial ntpdate failed to work. I find this
troubling, because when the network was restored, NTPD could have resumed
working (like I'd expect from a true

AD DC in a container: NTP
Hi Louis,
In general, this sounds like the solution I was looking for. But I’m still a bit unclear about the practical implementation.
So, the DC can be setup without ntpd as it will work based on the system clock which, in turn, is actually being updated by the container host using NTP. Which means we’ve got the DC itself covered. But if ntpd is not installed, then how can the DC serve time

I can't get Win10 clients to sync time with the DC
I'm running a Samba AD DC v4.9.9 with Windows 10 clients connected to it
and just noticed that the clients are not synchronizing time with the
server. I'm not sure why not.
My setup is a bit special in that the DC is running inside a (privileged)
linux container. For that reason, it's not possible or necessary for the
container to correct the system clock, this is done on the

Puppet check ntpd change
Hi All,
I am using vms on gogrid and rackspace completely. I am decent but still

control the Host is ntp time and date sync to be good.
Here is my config to sync ntp. Please dont tailor my code just help me fix
the problem. This code works 99% of the servers its on except for 2 centos
5 machines.
