minor director issues
I noticed 2 minor things with the director. 1) if I start 2 directors, but in 1 of them I dont add the other as a director_servers, they both start spamming the logfiles really really fast. It seems there is no backoff mechanism in the protocol between directors. 2) user mail server ip expire time cor 194.109.26.171 2010-09-02 14:32:13

director in large(ish) environments
Hey all, just wondering who here is running the director service in a larger environment. I just switched our whole production setup to the director and am quite pleased with the result. We're doing a peak of about 25000 tot 30000 concurrent sessions on 3 servers. But ive shut 1 server down a couple of days ago to see what would happen and 2 servers carried the load easily. doveadm proxy kick in director setups
Something I noticed on a 2.1.7 director test cluster (two directors, three backends): 'doveadm proxy kick user' will kick all connections for that user on that director only. Any additional connections on other directors will remain active unless the command is run on all directors. Are the proxy and director sub-commands intended to be separate and distinct in their operation? If so,

Dovecot Director behaviour when two or more fail
Hi, On the Dovecot wiki here http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Director it says the following: "The directors are going to connect to each others in a ring. For example if you have servers called A, B and C, director will create connections A->B, B->C and C->A" I am curious what happens in a scenario when two or more directors fail and potentially break a ring in half, do the

Director questions
In playing with dovecot director, a couple of things came up, one related to the other: 1) Is there an effective maximum of directors that shouldn't be exceeded? That is, even if technically possible, that I shouldn't go over? Since we're 100% NFS, we've scaled servers horizontally quite a bit. At this point, we've got servers operating as MTAs, servers doing IMAP/POP

Upgrading dovecot 2.2 to 2.3 without downtime when using proxy/director?

Have you set director_consistent_hashing=yes in the old directors? That is needed now, because the old non-consistent-hashing method is obsoleted. Unfortunately there's no easy

possible nfs issue
Hi all, we've started receiving complaints from users that seemingly use more quota than they actually have. We noticed that these users have (in some cases many) .nfs files in their mailspool. Some of our admins checked their own dirs, and noticed them there as well. This could of course be unrelated to dovecot (kernel issue, netapp issue) but maybe somehow has an idea about if dovecot could

Quota plugin and director
Hello dovecot! I administer a dovecot installation with 30k users. I've got 4 dovecot directors as frontend and 10 backends. The mailbox are now in maildir format, with maildir++ quota, on a shared netapp filer. Indexes are local on each backend. I'm reconfiguring the quota plugin: as a first step, I want to use the clone plugin to keep a copy of the quota on a redis database. Next,

adding servers to director_mail_servers
Is there a specific order in which one has to add servers to director_mail_servers, Let's say I have 20 loadbalanced director servers (I dont, but for arguments sake). I want to add 5 servers to director_mail_servers. If I do this by restarting each director server 1 by 1 with an updated conf, it seems the 5 new servers dont get added. Or at least I dont get what makes it work eventually.

crashes on 2.0.16
Hey all, I upgraded some servers today from Debian Lenny to Debian Squeeze, and after the upgrade I started getting dovecot crashes. I was on 2.0.13 but got these there as well, and hoped upgrading to 2.0.16 would help. It didn't. Anyone have an idea? director monitoring?
I'm working the kinks of a new director based setup for the eventual migration away from courier. At this point, with everything basically working I'm trying to ensure that things are properly monitored and I've run into an issue. There doesn't appear to be a way to get dovecot to tell if it is (or is not) connected and properly synced with the other director servers in the ring

In our experience. A ring with more of 4 servers is bad, we have sync problems everyone. Using 4 or less works perfect. TLS communication director -> backend with X.509 cert checks?
Hello, using Dovecot 2.2.9 and a setup with directors and backends. The communication between directors and backends needs to be TLS secured. The director config contains a list of hostnames for the backends. (implicit list because of multiple A/AAAA records for a single hostname or explicit list of several host names) On connection setup from a client the director connects to the selected

(new) director issues in 2.1.10
Timo - I upgraded to 2.1.10 on our director servers two nights ago and apart from errors associated with the directors processes restarting everything looked great for ~24 hours until I failed our the real servers last night to update the nfs mount options for the spools. I followed the suggested procedure for each backend server, just run on one of the directors, which seemed to work as

A new director service in v2.0 for NFS installations
As http://wiki.dovecot.org/NFS describes, the main problem with NFS has always been caching problems. One NFS client changes two files, but another NFS client sees only one of the changes, which Dovecot then assumes is caused by corruption. The recommended solution has always been to redirect the same user to only a single server at the same time. User doesn't have to be permanently assigned

4sec latency when using director
Hi, I've been running dovecot for many years, but now i've hit a strange problem. when retrieving imap there is sometimes in 1 of 4 imap requests a 4sec latency. * notes: - connected directly to the backends this latency disappears - removing a director from the loadbalancer(lvs) so i'm the only connected to the director this latency disappears too I would appreciate some feedback

Quota-status service on Director
Hi! quota-status is not supported in proxy configuration. You should use quota_warning and quota_over_flag scripts instead.
