SSD drives are really fast running Dovecot
I just replaced my drives for Dovecot using Maildir format with a pair
of Solid State Drives (SSD) in a raid 0 configuration. It's really
really fast. Kind of expensive but it's like getting 20x the speed for
20x the price. I think the big gain is in the 0 seek time.
Here's what I bought.

Sending email over IMAP?
I'm advocating for a change in the IMAP specification to allow outgoing
email to be sent over the same connection as incoming rather that having
to separately configure outgoing SMTP email. There are two significant
advantages to this concept.
1) It would greatly simplify setup for clients as they would only have
to configure one connection rather than two.
2) Spam reduction by

dovecot panic after upgrade 1.0.15 to 1.1.2
I recently upgraded dovecot from 1.0.15 to 1.1.2 and since then I am getting
the following types of things in the logs:

RC10 errors
I just installed a limited test of RC10 last night. So far, all is great
except for errors being logged for one user (out of about 150 users total).
This one user has not yet complained or anything, but the log file has
repeated
entries of the following format for him (host and username changed to protect
the guilty/innocent):

Thinking Outside the Box - Extending IMAP
Here's some thoughts I'd like to throw out there. I know it's not
standard IMAP protocol but someone has to try new ideas first and I want
to see what people (Timo) think of this.
IMAP establishes a connection between the client and the server.
Wouldn't it be great if it could be a conduit to let custom Thunderbird
plugins talk to custom server application over the IMAP

Master User Features I'd like to see
Here's what I'd like. Limited master users, where someone can be a
master users for some domains but not others. I think I could do what I
want with the right kinds of variable passing that doesn't yet exist.
Let me see if I can explain clearly.
From the example in the wiki:
auth_master_user_separator = *
passdb {
driver = sql
args = /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql-master.conf.ext

Experience moving mailboxes from Dovecot 0.99.14 to Dovecot 1.07 => Improvement possible
Hi,
This small mail to share my observation about a recent move of mailboxes
between two servers and ask about explanation and/or improvement about UIDL
in dovecot.

SV2 : Dovecot 1.07 / CentOS 5.2

Converting from Maildir - sdbox
OK - I thought this was going to be easy. Maybe it is. I'm just not that
good at reading directions.
Trying to use dsync. Getting this error:
Mail locations must use the same virtual mailbox hierarchy separator
(specify separator for the default namespace)
Currently using maildir. The setup is as follows:

Mixing MBOX and Maildir?
Is it possible to have some folders be mbox and some be maildir format?
Why you might ask? Sometime for diagnostics I have the Exim MTA archive
certain messages in MBOX format and then I want to copy them into an
imao folder to look at them with Thunderbird. When I used MBOX all I had
to do was copy the file into a folder and it worked. So what I'd like to
do is have a folder with a

scalability
Hi Folks,
How scalable is dovecot. Do you think a machine with a dual core 2.8Ghz
processor and 2GB of RAM would do a business with 600 users? This server
will have a 100Mbps link to the net, however it will be access by the
business using a couple of ADSL lines (Roughly 7Mbps each).
This machine will also be running Postfix
Your help is appreciated
Cheers

Best filesystem?
Hi everyone! What's the best filesystem to use for the mail spool? I'm
debating between Debian with xfs or FreeBSD with zfs. I'm not sure which
way to go. I'm migrating from cyrus. I have about 50 users so it's not a
large setup.
Cheers!

Email client dowloads previously read messages as new during migration.
I am migrating from UW to dovecot and using mbox. I have been able to find
mbox to maildir migration information and tools; however, I have had little
luck finding any tool or information for performing such a migration where I
wish to keep mbox. ( I know I should migrate to MailDir, but in the case I
wish to take baby steps.)
I have setup dovecot pop3 communication and I go to my email client

HA Dovecot Config?
Hi!
I'm currently running Dovecot 1.1.8 on a HP server using CentOS 5.2
as my IMAP server, receiving mail from postfix, and also using
squirrelmail as the frontend.
As I look at upgrading the mail server, I'd like to change to a
higher availability configuration (where the server can fail and I
don't have to reconfig my imap users).
For the SMTP that's easy, because I can

GlusterFs - Any new progress reports?
GlusterFs always strikes me as being "the solution" (one day...). It's
had a lot of growing pains, but there have been a few on the list had
success using it already.
Given some time has gone by since I last asked - has anyone got any more
recent experience with it and how has it worked out with particular
emphasis on Dovecot maildir storage? How has version 3 worked out for

Multiple postfix + single dovecot - optimal configuration
Hello,
I want to setup dovecot with two postfix servers on three machines:
- dovecot - with huge amount of disk space - where all user emails will
be kept,
- postfix1 - with greylisting, amavisd-new (spamassassin, clamav, etc),
with mysql backend,
- postfix2 - same as postfix1.
MX priority will be set to the same value for both postfix machines.
For now I don't know how to "glue"

Disconnect users for a distinct period of time?
Hi --
Today, I've learned who to disable incoming mail delivery to dovecot (accepted by postfix), temporarily. Now, I would like to know if there is a way to make a "doveadm kick -A" a permanent disconnect until one would allow reconnects, again? This should be done *without* shutting down dovecot or *extensive* re-configuration. A "doveadm block -u <joe> -m 'sorry:

Question about "slow" storage but fast cpus, plenty of ram and dovecot
Hello
We are using dovecot 1.2.x. In our setup we will have 1200
concurrent imap users (maildirs) and we have 2xraid5 sas 15k diks
mounted by iSCSI. The dovecot server (RHEL 5 x64) is
a virtual machine
in our vmware esx cluster. We want to minimize disk I/O, what config
options should we use. We can "exchange" CPU & RAM to minimize disk i/o.
Should we change to dovecot 2.0?

[OT] How do I convert maildir to bsmtp format?
Here's what I'm trying to do. I have a spam filtering operation as a
front end for other servers. I've created a virtual server for spam
storage where the user will be able to log in using squirrelmail/dovecot
to review and release their spam. The email is stored in maildir format.
Piecing it together I can use squirrelmail to pipe the email into
something so that if a use finds a
