Fault tolerant architecture
Hi,
I'm new to this list and want your help.
I'm the mail admin for some domains in Rio de Janeiro - Brazil. Today we have only one machine running dovecot (imap+pop3) with local mail.
We are migrating to two virtual machines in kvm running in separate hosts. Then we have two main problems:
- How to share mail files to both dovecots? We've been thinking about NFS using local indexes.

Re: Samba and NUL characters
I've tried CIFS VFS with the following config in my fstab
//cdn-mtl-ms/Logs /mnt/logs cifs username=user,password=pass 0 0
And I still have the same problem. As for kernel versions, the working
one uses "linux-2.4.21-20.EL" and the non-working one uses
"linux-2.6.9-11.EL". Does this have anything to do with "oplock" being
enabled in the kernel? I've

Re: Samba and NUL characters
Hi,
We have a Windows NT 4 SP5 sharing a read-only share of logs
that are constantly being written to and a Linux box running CentOS
release 4.2 (Final) that mounts this share. The share in mounted using
the following command:
smbmount //cdn-mtl-ms/Logs /mnt/logs -o
sockopt=SO_KEEPALIVE,username=user,password=pass,ro,uid=503,gid=503
smbmount -v shows --> Version 3.0.10-1.4E.2

UNSEEN flag issues with multiple clients
Hi all,
I've been bugged by this issue for a while, and while I see that the
\UNSEEN flag is specified in the RFC to be reset once *any* client
connects and looks at a mailbox, I was wondering if there's a way to
change the behavior so that it's tracked on a per-client basis?
Or if there's even some way to turn it off so that both my iPhone mail
client and my main emacs viewmail

2.1.rc1 (056934abd2ef): virtual plugin mailbox search pattern
Hello Timo,
With dovecot 2.1.rc1 (056934abd2ef) there seems to be something wrong
with virtual plugin mailbox search patterns.
I'm using a virtual mailbox 'unread' with the following dovecot-virtual file
$ cat dovecot-virtual

unseen
For testing propose I created the following folders with each containing
one unread message
INBOX, INBOX/level1 and INBOX/level1/level2

flags not synced correctly with dovecot sync (dsync)
I should add that these problems arise frequently in practice, even if
changes are only being made on a single machine, e.g. laptop1. Flag
changes on laptop1 propagate to server, but then are reverted on server
when laptop2 syncs with server, and then are reverted on laptop1 when it
syncs again with server. If I redo the flag changes on laptop1, the
process just repeats and they are removed

Authentication: is a guest a user or an "exception"?
Hi all
I''m currently implementing authentication/authorization in my app. Now
I''m wondering what''s the common way to handle a guest...
In fact, many of the visitors of my app will be anonymous users that
just want to read articles etc., but one can register as a member to
have some further possibilities. So far one can login as a member and
from this point on one has

Possibly a bug
I believe that I've found a bug on Samba 2.2.3a. Sure, there is the 2.2.5
version out there, but reading the changelog I couldn't find something that
looked like what I've found.
Problem is:
Some files (very few of them, about 0,5%) are created, with 2 another copies.
The file witch would be the real one is perfect. And we got "for free" 2
corrupted copies of it, with

per-user virtual mailboxes
Have given up on getting the global virtual config for now, and am trying to setup the virtual mailboxes for just my user account. Basically, it's behaving exactly as it did when I was trying to use a global config. This, and the lack of errors, is causing me to think that it is something odd in my install as opposed to a configuration issue (full doveconf -n at end)

flags not synced correctly with dovecot sync (dsync)
I'm running dovecot 2.3.4.1 from https://repo.dovecot.org/ on Ubuntu
18.04 on three machines that I'll call server, laptop1 and laptop2.
Both laptop1 and laptop2 run dovecot sync against server to keep local
copies of my imap folders. Even when I initially had only two machines,
laptop1 and server, I occasionally noticed that flags were lost, usually
custom flags used by Gnus, but I

dovecot notifying a database about total number of messages.
Hello,
in addition to our mail system, we have some other systems which
needs to know how many messages, and how many unread messages, a
user has in his/her inbox (maildir).
Currently, we have a mod_perl script which takes a mail address as
input, and then traverses the maildir, and outputs the number of
unread messages.
Our challenge is that the maildirs are located on a SAN, and
traversing a

Phantom email message
Got sort of a strange problem on one email account. Everything works
fine with Thunderbird/IMAP showing the correct unread message count. But
on my DroidX smartphone one of my email accounts always shows one unread
message, but I can't bring any unread messages up. It's like there's
something there making it think there's a message when there isn't.
The email client is K-9

Virtual mailboxes, index update issues
Hello,
I noticed a strange behavor, where I would like to ask for help.
I have set up a few virtual mailboxes using the Virtual plugin.
These mailboxes are:
- Unread (all undread in all mailboxes)
- LastDay (last 24h of all mailboxes)
- LastWeek (last 7 days of all mailboxes)
...
The virtual mailboxes in general are working great. However, there is one
annoying behavior I would like to fix.

STATUS command and total/read message count
Hello,
I'm running Dovecot 1.0.15 with Thunderbird 3.0.1. TB can query
folders for messages in two ways: Either by using the STATUS command,
or by opening the folder (don't know the respective IMAP commands,
sorry...).
Querying via opening the folder is reliable, but via the STATUS
command, only new/unread messages are shown. If I want to have the
total number of (unread) mesages in a
