question on mounting a partition that is in a disk image
How do I mount a partition that is in an image file?
I have a file called centos.img that has 3 partitions in the file.
I need to copy data to the third partition on that image file.
I have seen things about a loop back device (which is fine)
but then it talked about an offset parameter and I dont know what
that is or more importantly what number to use. I hope I'm on the
right track.

whoops, corrupted my filesystem
Hi all-
I corrupted my filesystem by not doing a RTFM first... I got an automated
email that the process monitoring the SMART data from my hard drive detected
a bad sector. Not thinking (or RTFMing), I did a fsck on my partition-
which is the main partition. Now it appears that I've ruined the
superblock.
I am running Fedora Core 6. I am booting off the Fedora Core 6 Rescue CD in

Is this ext3 or bad drive sectors problem?
Hello LINUX GURUS,
I am fairly new to LINUX OS, so pardon my ignorance about LINUX OS.
I have installed LINUX 7.2 on IBM netfinity 4000R server. OS works fine for few days and start giving me this error message all of a sudden:
"kernel: hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { Driveready SeekComplete Error }"
"kernel: hda: dma_intr: status=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=4944861,

e2fsck: Bad magic number in super-block
I posted this to the Fedora-list, but thought I might get some
additional information here as well.
I have a HD that refuses to mount with a 'bad magic number in
super-block'. I'm running FedoraCore 6 x86_64.
[root at moe ~]# fdisk -l /dev/hdc
Disk /dev/hdc: 250.0 GB, 250059350016 bytes

HD Partition Lost??
Help!
I am running FC1, with a maxtor 160GB HD installed. Drive is only about a
month old. I had just finished moving data from an older HD that was making
some funny sounds and throwing some random errors. All was well. Last night
we lost power for several hours and 1 machine's UPS/shutdown system didn't
power down the workstation. The other 7 in our office did fine. The power

Attempting To Recover, fsck infinite looping on me
Hey all,
Had a power failure and subsequent ext3 disk corruptions. Attempting
to fix, but not working.
Its a 120 gig IDE disk, 3 partitions. /boot, /, and swap.
Basically can't boot up since the box can't get to the system files
in /usr/ or anything.
So I'm booting off of a FC2 disk 1 in recovery mode and trying to fix
the filesystem with e2fsck
The boot partition cleaned up

what''s correct way of shrinking LVM based domU?
Hi all
I want to shrink one of my LVM based domU''s, but don''t quite know how to
do it.
I have searched the Wiki & HOWTO''s, and they all show you how expand /
enlarge a LVM based domU, but not shrinking it.
So, I stopped (destroyed) the domU, and then resized it as follows:
lvresize /dev/data/cpanel1 -L10GB (It was 100GB), but when I a started

I am using tar to backup the whole system (specific directorues usr, lib, sbin, etc, var, home, root).
On bare metal recovery I install the minimal portion of the syetm and then I throw the tarballs.
Any opinions?

[Newbie] Reclaiming /boot space
When trying to do a yum update, I am told I need more space in
/boot. When I check the contents of /boot (ls -l /boot), there
are no files.
If I do a df -h, there is no available space yet it shows that it
has a lot of used space.
The fstab shows the following:
# This file is edited by fstab-sync - see 'man fstab-sync' for
details

One of my servers wont boot today
Hi All,
One of my servers upon a restart today comes up with an error
checking filesystems:
fsck.ext3: no such file or directory while trying to open /dev/VolGroup-1/Logvol00.
/dev/VolGroup-1/LogVol00. The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then

Needed help to fix corrupted ext3 fs
I have been trying very hard to seek help with my very complex issue but
so far none have been successful. So I would like to try this mailing
list, maybe there are some experts who know what they're talking about.
Please refer to my experts-exchange question, all the required
information will be there. It is more practical to send you to the
webpage than paste out what I've done.

Installation problems with large mirrored drives
I am trying to install CentOS 4.6 to a pair of 750GB hard drives. I can
successfully install to either of the drives as a single drive, but when
I try to use both drives and mirror the partitions, I start having
problems. Anaconda crashes as it is trying to format the drives.
This is what I'm trying to create:
/dev/md0: 200MB, /boot
/dev/md1: 2GB, swap

CentOS Live CD for System Rescue - How to get full root access to HD?
Booting from the CentOS 5.2 Installation DVD (or the first
Installation CD), one can type "linux rescue" and then "chroot
/mnt/sysimage" and have full root access to the OS on the HD. For
future reference, I would like to know what I did wrong, the past
couple of days, when trying to use the CentOS 5.2 i386 Live CD, for
rescue. From a terminal, "su -" did not seem to

Reinstalled Windows and GRUB - Cannot boot Linux - fstab and grub.conf errors?
Background: This is a dual boot (Windows XP and CentOS 5.2 (32 bit)
box. There were four (4) NTFS partitions. The C partition got full. I
deleted the 4 NTFS partitions and did a clean install of Windows XP,
into one (1) NTFS partition.
I knew that I would need to install GRUB again and I did that, using
the CentOS 5 Installation DVD. When I tried to boot into Linux, no
joy. this is the GRUB error
