OT: IMAP folder aliases
It seems that there is no standard for folder names that deal with typical
message classes such as drafts, outbox, sent, spam etc. At least there's no
common sense on a naming convention that tells how client should handle this.
Worse than this, most IMAP clients auto-create folders according to their own
naming convention if they don't exist. Every client introduces its own view.

Outlook renames Junk folder
Hello,
Some versions of Outlook will randomly rename the Junk folder to Junk Email.
This of course causes errors because Dovecot can no longer store junk.
I go in to Outlook for each user and add another Junk folder, so now
they have Junk and Junk Email. This fix action lasts a while until
Outlook decides to do it again.
Is there a way to tell Dovecot that if the Junk folder doesn't

Configuring SPECIAL-USE Dovecot 2.0.9
Hi All,
I'm trying to configure Dovecot 2.0.9 to support Outlook 2013.
As I understand it, I need to configure XLIST. I have added
imap_capability = +XLIST
to 20-imap.conf
When I try to query the IMAP folders I get an error "An IMAP command
Failed". Looking at the logs I get XLIST Command not found.
I can only assume that I'm missing something in the

Maildir folder renaming disagreement among IMAP clients
A user alerted me to a problem when he renamed an upper level mail
folder and lost access to a lower level folder under it.
I tried with and without listescape, it didn't seem to make a
difference, and I saw no errors in the dovecot log.
Symptoms are if a client has a maildir folder tree .a and .a.b and
renames a to c in their client, Thunderbird shows c/b but b is
inaccessible since it

user-defined special-use folders
I plan to define SPECIAL-USE mailboxes and think about defining per user
special-use folders for those who don't use the default folder names. Is
this possible in dovecot?
What I try:
$ doveadm exec imap
* PREAUTH [CAPABILITY IMAP4rev1 LITERAL+ SASL-IR LOGIN-REFERRALS ID ENABLE
IDLE SORT SORT=DISPLAY THREAD=REFERENCES THREAD=REFS THREAD=ORDEREDSUBJECT

Prohibit dots in folder names
Hello Dovecot Community,
I am using Dovecot 2.2.13-12~deb8u1 (Debian Jessie).
separator = /
listescape plugin is NOT active
LAYOUT=fs is NOT active
I would like to prohibit a creation of folders with dot "." in the names
-
so creation of a folder "foo.bar" should NOT be possible.
Currently, when I create "foo.bar" in Outlook 2013 it will be created

best practice to have sent mail folder on dovecot imap server
I've already asked this here:
http://serverfault.com/questions/533940/best-practice-to-have-sent-mail-
folder-on-dovecot-imap-server
Hi,
when I add a mail account to KMail (or most other MUA I suppose) the sent mail
folder is on the local machine and I don't have my sent mails on other
machines.
I'd like to have a sent mail folder in IMAP and I thought that there would

Cosmetic issue with dots in Maildir folder names
Just a minor cosmetic issue: We use the listescape plugin in order to
support "." characters in Maildir++ folder names, and in at least the
following case, the escaped representation of the dot character ("\2e")
won't be translated back to a "." in messages for the IMAP client:
| 1 SELECT non.existent
| 1 NO Mailbox doesn't exist: non\2eexistent

Maildir + quota + listescape = wrong dir location
I've just stumbled across a strange thing which seems to be a bug.
It happens in 2.0.9 as well as 2.0.11 in which I tested it.

IMAP Folder Mail Separator
Hi,
I have a fedora21 install with dovecot-2.2.18, and when creating a new
subfolder with thunderbird, the actual folder name is
"Folder1^Folder2" with a carat as a separator, instead of creating
Folder2 in the Folder1 directory.
Is this a thunderbird problem? I don't recall having this problem
prior to upgrading to fedora21, so thought maybe it's a dovecot
problem.
Maybe the

Failing to share folders when listescape is enabled (2.0.14)
Hello,
How I can share a folder with dots when the listescape plugin is enabled?
In this example user001 is sharing two foders named "docs-abc" and "docs-a.b.c" to user002.
The first folder (without dots) is seen by user002 but the second is not found by dovecot because it search a system folder named ".docs-a.b.c" but the system folder is

It should be mentioned somehow that one can't just change the hierarchy
separator on the fly (without manual changes to the fs).
If you used . as the separator, it would look this in the filesystem:
.testfolder.sub1
Now you change the separator to $.
Your mail client will see the existing

the listescape plugin seems to take its job a little bit too serious.

outlook idiocy - IMAP folders with /
user attempts to create folders with /
dovecot naturally cannot create it so it returns error but outlook of
course "create" it and keep data in local store only. data is lost when
you remove local store .pst file.
The question is - can dovecot be configured so it will automatically
replace slash in name with something else?
