Extracting sums for individual factors in data frames
I have a data frame with two columns, one of which is a factor (Species) and the other is numeric (BA, which stands for basal area). Here's a sample: Species BA ACSA 55.7632696 FRAM 122.9933524 ACSA 67.54424205 ACSA 89.22123136 ACSA 82.46680716 ACSA 22.46238747 ACSA 19.94911335 ACSA 20.42035225 ACSA 19.00663555 ACSA 21.67698931 ACSA 57.80530483 ACSA 30.31636911 Dead 43.98229715 Dead

SMB share and .mdb files?
Hi. With samba 3.0.25b as part of Mac OS X 10.5.4 Server, I'm encountering issues with .mdb files: Some Windows apps use client software on local machines and one Microsoft Access database on the SMB share. Everything works fine, as long as there's only one client using the .mdb file. As soon as a second client tries to access (and write!) to the .mdb file, the clients on the Windows

porting numbers in UK telewest/bt/adept
A client used to use BT isdn30 and ported the numbers to telewest several years ago. Now, the client moved to adept telecom. I *think* adept resells BT products. We got new numbers from adept (bt?) and the old pbx on the telewest lines forwards the calls to the new numbers. On the adept line I got a digium card in an opteron supermicro server. ztcfg gives me over 99.99 pretty much all the time.

dhcrelay on router
Hi, I''m setting up a router (linux, debian-sarge), which shall relay dhcp requests from all subnets to a central DHCP server. The general stuff is solved, i.e. I can ping from any connected machine to any other including the NICs of the router itself. All firewall tables (including nat and mangle) are set to ACCEPT and flushed. On my model system I have the NIC 172.16.1.121 (eth1),

Wine 0.9.55 late for (k)ubuntu?
Hi all, I noticed on the web site that Wine 0.9.55 has been released on February, 8th, but still I don't see the update on Adept Manager. I'm using Kubuntu 7.10 64 Bits and I added the Wine's official repository on the Adept repository list. Is it just me or there is a problem on the Wine repository? Thank in advance. -- Marco Di Fresco

Speed question: 8-disk RAIDZ2 vs 10-disk RAIDZ3
I currently am getting good speeds out of my existing system (8x 2TB in a RAIDZ2 exported over fibre channel) but there''s no such thing as too much speed, and these other two drive bays are just begging for drives in them.... If I go to 10x 2TB in a RAIDZ3, will the extra spindles increase speed, or will the extra parity writes reduce speed, or will the two factors offset and leave things

stable + squid 2.5_3
I seem to be having a problem, but I'm not sure if it's -stable, Squid, or neither. I've been running -stable+Squid on a Dell 4600 for a couple years now. All has been well, but after upgrading to Squid 2.5_3 (which was also done on a couple other, less-loaded, -stable machines without this issue to date), I occasionally get errors in my cache.log and this AM Squid died and required

WinXP and Mac OS X Server PDC: long logout times
Hello list, I recently added a new workstation to my PDC and have been experiencing some problems with roaming profiles. The PDC in question is Mac OS X Server 10.3.4, which has Samba 3.0.2 on it. The machine has been functioning without issue as a PDC and I have had no problems with my Win2k clients. While login times are quick, the XP SP1 machine takes a long, long time to log out.

Function to recognise convert dates between gregorian and other calendars (e.g. Persian)?
Dear list, I will shortly have some data that contains numeric dates in the Persian / Jalali calendar format, which I would like to convert to gregorian. At the moment there doesn't seem to be a function for this in R, but it would be great if someone could come up with same - I would attempt it but the algorithm is very complex and this is also way beyond my fairly rudimentary knowledge of

Solaris xattr support (from Mac OS X 10.6)
Hi, I wonder if anyone can confirm if they've been able to successfully transfer xattrs with rsync to a Solaris (based) system (in this case Nexenta Core 3). I managed to get rsync to build with xattr support on Nexenta by using 3.0.10dev, and running rsync --version shows that it's included. However if I try to rsync files from a Mac OS X (10.6) system to the Nexenta system (or vice

Seeking expert RoR developer in NYC area
I have a project for which I am seeking a partner to do the development. You should be an expert in RoR, have time available for development and looking to be a part of an unusually good business venture. With this project you will not have any annoying clients with no understanding of technology, I am very adept at web tech in other languages and can supply you business logic in terms of

New to R
I'm relatively new to R, and not particularly adept yet, but I was wondering if there was a simply way to simulate missing data that are MAR, MNAR and MCAR. I've got a good work-around for the MCAR data, but it's sort of hard to work with. Josh [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

JavaScript question
Hi guys, I know this is not the perfect place to ask this question, but I''m struggling with object-oriented javascript and event-handlers and you guys are probably the only ones adept enough to help me out with this. I have this calendar code I hate (and still have to maintain ;) and wanted to change it to use object-orientation. So I have written a JavaScript-class called

advice on package devel with external libs
hi all - i'm working on an R package that makes use of my own shared library written in C. but i also am making use of another C-written library. (my package is for facilitating biological namespace translations via online (i.e. up-to-date) biological databases.) problem is, the library i'm using is not a standard library (i.e. i doubt it will be installed on most users' machines). i
