Ok, I've given up
Sigh, In the interest of moving forward on this project I've given up trying to get Dovecot to support mailboxes, rather I've tweaked around in qmail and had it deliver into a mail directory on a disk, that isn't NFS mounted. That got me past the various locking complaints and "operation not supported" on home directories that were mounted from the NetApp filer. Going as

inetd & corrupt environment
Hello. I'm having the following problem with dovecot 1.0.12 and above, on a FreeBSD 7.0 system - I'm trying to run pop3-login from inetd and I keep getting this error after authentication: May 25 09:46:19 charlie dovecot: POP3(gelu): /libexec/ld-elf.so.1: environment corrupt; missing value for no-nuls oe-ns-eoh The problem persists if I uncomment the lines with no-nuls oe-ns-eoh in

severe error in SSH session key recovery patch
http://www.core-sdi.com/advisories/ssh1_sessionkey_recovery.htm includes the line of code: kill(SIGALRM, getppid()); This is contained within what is listed as an "unsupported and untested patch" developed by SSH.com. The problem is that the arguments to "kill" are in the wrong order. In other words, to obtain the effect that was apparently intended, the line of code

dovecot, vpopmail and djb's tcpserver
Hello! I've tried to set up dovecot in conjuction with vpopmail, and running it under djb's tcpserver instead of (x)inetd. Btw - there was no reference to setting dovecot up using (x)inetd either in the manuals/faqs i read, though I didn't search all that hard. Anyway, back to my Q: vpopmail uses vchkpw as an authentication mechanism, and with tcpserver I can do relaycontrol (based

New admin, not much success
Hello, I'm trying to set up something fairly simple (famous last words) using Dovecot. I have a very small setup (just a dozen users) I'm using qmail as my MTA. I'm running FreeBSD 8.0 I've got qmail delivering into a file named 'Mailbox' in user's home directories. I prefer not to use Maildir delivery because from a shell its a PITA to get a Maildir aware MUA (I

daemontools supervise and smbd
Hello, I'm trying to run smbd with djb daemontools' supervise. Here's the way I followed: # 2/6/2002 # problem running samba-2.2.4 and supervise problem: run smbd with supervise subproblem 1: smbd & nnmbd with -D option deteach from tty, so supervise cannot control them; solution 1: we can patch smb/server.c (foreground patch) to prevent deteach, but a second

Re: POP secure access?? {result}
Hi All, First I would like to thank all who gave me pointers on where to look for the applications. There are also some of you who wanted me to post my findings. Hence I have decided to post a mini how-to. I actually ran a sniffer on it, and all messages are encrypted. :) If there's any prob, just drop me a line. starting/stopping Dovecot

dovecot upgrade problems
Hi list, i made an upgrade from dovecot 1.0RC15 to 1.1.20 the default installation was under /etc/dovecot. The upgrade installation was made under /usr/local/etc. After that i changed all the paths in the /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf and the dovecot-binary to work with the new installation. Even path-changes were made for /etc/init.d/dovecot to work with the version 1.1.20. Changes in the

STARTTLS and inetd
Hi! When running dovecot from inetd (as per the instructions on http://wiki.dovecot.org/InetdInstall), imap-login and pop3-login thinks that TLS is enabled when in fact it isn't (we're connecting to port 110 and port 143, so the --ssl parameter isn't present). The reason for that is found in login-common/main.c:main(): > if (fd != -1) > (void)client_create(fd, &ip,

New User: POP3 issues
Fellow dovecot'ers, I'm just getting started with Dovecot, and I'm not a programmer, so please be gentle. ;-) THE PLATFORM: NetBSD 3.0/SPARC, Postfix 2.3-RC8, current Dovecot RC (I forgot the number). Maildir-type directories. THE GOAL: To accommodate authenticated (remote) POP3 users with APOP or SSL/TLS, and allow users on the internal network (192.168.x.x) to just use basic

Logging to stderr
Hi, I am having a bit of a problem with logging to stderr. I am trying to run dovecot as sort of "inetd" install using daemontools. I have daemontools 'services' named dovecot-pop3, dovecot-imap, etc. The service command line looks like tcpsvd -c20 -v -l 0 0 110 /usr/lib/dovecot/pop3-login [--ssl] In dovecot/dovecot.conf, the log_path is set to /dev/stderr. What seems to

Patch for stderr logging
Rsync team, and interested parties: i was attempting to get rsync to launch from tcpserver[0] (an inetd replacement from djb) and log to stderr for logging via multilog[1] (syslog replacement by djb) and i was unable to get it to log to stdout/ stderr at all. [0] http://cr.yp.to/ucspi-tcp/tcpserver.html [1] http://cr.yp.to/daemontools/multilog.html i have attached a patch that allows

disable_plaintext_auth, inetd, localhost, IPv6, and mapped addresses
Dovecot 0.99.13. I've noticed that the condition client->secured = ssl || (IPADDR_IS_V4(ip) && strncmp(addr, "127.", 4) == 0) || (IPADDR_IS_V6(ip) && strcmp(addr, "::1") == 0); (in (imap-login|pop3-login)/client.c) isn't enough, at least not when running from inetd. The thing is that you will come across ::ffff:127.0.0.1, which is secure,

Failure in the presence of too many connections
Had an event today where dovecot refused new connections and would not accept more until restarted, whereupon it worked for a few minutes and locked up again. Looking at the logs it appeared that it had run out of file descriptors. I increased the open files limit and started it again-- which worked but it only pushes off the problem. Does dovecot keep an open file descriptor for every imap or

new configure-option --disable-index
Hello, I experimented with dovecot the whole evening yesterday and the mailserver worked fine since there haven't been that much users connecting to it. I'm using dovecot 1.0.alpha5 as pop3 and pop3s server. The maildirs are mounted through NFS and since there is no nfslockd running I disabled mmap in the config and told dovecot to use dotlock. Also I experienced, that dovecot was

smbd and login scripts
Hello I've two strange problems: - smbd I've attached you my smb.conf, inetd.conf and my log file. Sometimes smbd and nmbd run and somtimes only nmbd run (I check it with ps -ax). But I have access over my shares (I test it with my Win95 machine). Also in my log file there're some error messages (I don't now from where the came). - login scripts My scripts won't run but if

Dovecot and fake users
Hi everyone, Our company has decided to make a fake POP3 (and possibly IMAP) server, which accepts any user name and password combination and shows there are no new messages. This is for the purpose that when our mail cluster passes out, we can redirect our clients to this server while we fix our mail system. This way we can prevent our users from getting errors. We are using the latest

My god, it full of "CLOSE_WAITS"
Hello samba people. I am having a odd problem related to winbindd. When I leave it running overnight on a quiet (not silent however) server I find that it generates a large number of CLOSE_WAIT state connections. 84 on a fairly quiet system in the last 18 hours. I can't seem to find any command that directly affects the number of CLOSE_WAITS. Below is my netstat listing. Any ideas would

Dovecot + Cygwin the 2nd
Hi, i still try to get dovecot to run under cygwin. After a post on the cygwin list i am able tu run dovecot. Under Cygwin you have to run dovecot by inetd. Starting the binary "dovecot.exe" does not work. Well the server is running but answers with a fatal error. Account: 'localhost', Server: 'localhost', Protokoll: POP3, Serveranswer: 'Fatal: EOF while reading
