x86 uniprocessor 4GB memory (fwd)
If you have an AGP video card which you aren't actually using you can try selecting the minimum possible AGP apperture (window whatever) size (possibly even disable it?). This might help. Also removing the AGP card and using a junk 1-8MB svga card will also possibly work. In my experience the linear framebuffer of video cards is by far the greatest memory hog these days. Cheers, MaZe.

Unresolved Symbols on Uniprocessor Kernel
I'm trying to install ocfs using RHAS 2.1 uniprocessor kernel on a vmware gsx server 3.0 virtual machine and I'm getting the unresolved symbols error when I try to start ocfs. I'm using the following packages: ocfs-tools-1.0.10-1.i386.rpm ocfs-support-1.0.10-1.i386.rpm ocfs-2.4.9-e-1.0.11-1.i686.rpm My kernel is 2.4.9-e.38 uniprocessor (compiled by me). Uniprocessor kernel booted after YUM update
We have Xeon IA32 dual-processor servers running Centos 3.5 in an HPC batch-only compute grid configuration . We have yum update operating automatically with default updates being applied weekly. Because of the workload pattern of long-runing jobs, the servers tend to stay up without a reboot for very long periods. Recently, yum installed an updated kernel 2.4.21-32.0.1.ELsmp; when we got

ENC: ENC: Unresolved Symbols on Uniprocessor Kernel
As I said before, I'm not a linux expert. In which file of kernel source can I look for any missing code ? And specially what do I have to check ? __________________________________________ Mauro Staretz - MI Montreal Inform?tica Ltda Microsoft MCSE+I / MCDBA / MCP - Oracle OCP Tel: 55-21-2291-6116 R.2104 Fax: 55-21-2533-6028 __________________________________________ -----Mensagem

Hi, Is this "Unresolved Symbols" issue only occurring on VMware with e.38? We have OCFS users want to update their kernel to e.34 or e.38 without VMware. Please advise, Thanks! configuration request
I've apparently gotten myself into somewhat of a bind. I've been trying to exclude various packages from the different repos, and while I *think* I've gotten a working configuration again, it it still pulling stuff in that I have excluded I think in the right repos, but things I have no use for whatsoever. Items like kernel-hugemem-devel, kernel-hugemem, and anything involving

Which kernel package?
I am building a new system which will have a pair of dual-core Opterons and 16GB memory. Should I use kernel-smp or kernel-hugemem? I see that RH recommends the hugemem kernel if you have more than 16GB (and we may upgrade at some point, the MB supports 32GB). Any comments on this? The only difference that the descriptions show is the 4GB/4GB split with the hugemem kernel and I'm not quite

yum update question and kernel-smp-devel
I have a local yum repository for CentOS4, and from time to time I add new (custom) kernel RPMS. However, when I run 'yum update' on an SMP box, yum 'installs' the new kernel, kernel-devel and kernel-smp packages, but 'updates' the kernel-smp-devel package. i.e. I end up with multiple versions of the kernel, kernel-devel and kernel-smp packages, but only the latest

Startup error- new install
Looking for any ideas where I need to look to fix this: I'm installing RHEL3 AS (update 4) on Dell PowerEdge 6850's. I've installed the hugemem kernels on these boxes and need to install and run ocfs. UP vs SMP kernel ?
There was a discussion here several days ago that was precipitated by my decision to manually install the new kernel before YUMming the upgrade to CentOS 4.2. The upgrade went south but I recovered by doing a fresh install and a bunch of copying from backups. All's well EXCEPT that I'm back in the same "box", thanks to anaconda. I set out to upgrade kernels this morning:

yum remove <old kernel pkgs> -- wants to remove a ton of stuff
I've got a Centos 4 box at work, where I noticed a pile of old kernels lying around and no longer needed. I did "rpm -qa | grep -y kernel > list" then edited the list to remove from it the newer kernels, then "yum remove `cat list`". Yum has come up with a list of 71 packages it wants to remove, even though there were only 33 kernel-related RPMs in the list. this

Building Custom Kernel - CentOS 4.4
Hi All, I am having issue when trying to build a custom kernel in CentOS 4.4. Current Kernel Version is 2.6.9-42.ELsmp and the server is HP Proliant DL380 G3. I downloaded the source rpm and then installed it. Gave the command, rpmbuild -bp --target=i686 /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/kernel-2.6.spec. But it throws me an error after patch operations. The following is the error.

RFI: Information for Centos 4 unsupported kernels
Hi, this may sound stupid, but; - I'd like to install unsupported x86/i386 smp kernel because I need some support (for eg. dual booting for r/w files for winXP) etc. I'm now using 4.3 latest smp kernel. (I've tested that x86 still runs better than x86_64 like I was told in January. Thanks for the advice.) Questions: Is there any documentation for how to install unsupported smp
