Dovecot readable compressed mail archive
Hello. Is Dovecot able to create and/or read any sort of compressed mail archive? We have a large installation with a few users who need to keep a large amount of email available. With maildir this means a large number of individual files, leading to additional load on our backup process. Even using a compressed mbox file as an archive would help, but only if Dovecot is able to interact

compressed archives
Suppose I have a particular version of a largish compressed archive, most likely a .tgz or .tbz2, and that a remote machine has a newer, and only slightly different, version of the same archive, where most of the content hasn't actually changed much. I might attempt to obtain a copy of the newer archive by first copying my local older copy to the newer name as a file to update from. My

Compressed maildir
Greetings, I noticed a while back someone posted a patch/plugin that allowed Dovecot to use compressed mbox files. I'm now wondering how far that would put us from having compressed maildir? I have a server with more CPU than disk space, and while I can buy more HDD space, my backup solution doesn't make that practical. It seems to me that when looking for a message file, if it

error bad file number with compressed mbox files
Hello, can dsync convert from compressed mbox to compressed mdbox format? When I use compressed mbox files, either with gzip or with bzip2, I can read the mails as usual, but I find the following errors in dovecots log file: imap(userxy): Error: nfs_flush_fcntl: fcntl(/home/hrz/userxy/Mail/mymbox.gz, F_RDLCK) failed: Bad file number imap(userxy): Error: nfs_flush_fcntl:

Hello, I use mbox compressed by gzip as read-only folder (using zlib plugin). I have errors in logs: Panic: file istream-zlib.c: line 416 (i_stream_zlib_seek): assertion failed: (ret == -1) and can't read messages in MUA. compressed mboxes very slow
I have some archive mails in gzipped mboxes. I could use them with dovecot 1.x without problems. But recently I have installed dovecot 2.0.12, and they are slow. very slow. Creating index files takes about 10 minutes for ~20M file with 560 messages for bzipped mbox, for gzipped is little better but still unusable :( Stracing dovecot process shows that every ~ 20 messages it rereads complete mbox

getting Apple Mail and dovecot/IMAP to co-operate
Hi. I've been fighting a losing battle to get Apple Mail and dovecot to play nice. When dovecot is told to use mbox-style mailboxes, it's not possible to create child mailboxes. Apple Mail whines "The IMAP command ?CREATE? failed with server error: Mailbox doesn't allow inferior mailboxes.". I've looked through the documentation, the wiki and searched the mail

rsync-ing compressed archives
Hi there! I'm quite happily using rsync. There is only one case where I couldn't figure out how to use it efficently: I sometimes have large compressed files (either .tar.gz or .zip) that I need to keep synchronized. The exploded files are usually not available on the machines i use for rsync (to keep everything unpacked would mean wasting a lot of space on the server). The problem is that

zlib plugin
hi, Could anyone give some info on this plugin? When i read the wiki (http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Zlib) i'm still left with some questions... I use Maildir to store my mails, if i enable this zlib-plugin, should i 'manually' compress all messages? or wil the uncompressed messages still be accessible by dovecot? wil new messages be compressed automagically? how should the

compressed mbox patch
Some ages ago there existed a compressed mbox patch, but now all I can find are posting about it. Does such a beast exist and would it remotely apply to today's dovecot? If not, is there any hope that something like that emerges? Thanks! -- Axel.Thimm at ATrpms.net -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Name: not available Type:

Changing the name of a compressed file
Thanks for that Aki. Follow-up question. I tried to initiate compression by adding mail_plugins = $mail_plugins zlib plugin { zlib_save_level = 6 zlib_save = xz } to dovecot.conf. I restarted dovecot and sent one message to the server, and one message from the server. Neither was compressed. I changed the save type to zlib_save = bz2 and repeated. This time the message

body search very slow since upgrade from 1.0.15 to 1.2.10
Did you mislead me Timo? You said search in 1.1+ is faster than 1.0. I'm seeing approximately 20x *slower* search times in 1.2.10. Via Thunderbird, a full body search of my 11,000+ message IMAP folder hosted by 1.0.15 used to take less than 10 seconds. Since upgrading to 1.2.10 the search is taking over 3 minutes, the imap process servicing the client pegging one CPU at 100% for the

Changing the name of a compressed file
Ok, I added zlib to imap protocol. protocol imap { ? mail_plugins = $mail_plugins zlib } Now both imap and lmtp protocols have zlib plugin enabled, and both send and receive mail is compressed. Changing the name of a compressed file
Concerning Maildir, the wiki page on compression has this: All mails must have ,S=<size> in their filename where <size> contains the original uncompressed mail size, otherwise there will be problems with quota calculation as well as other potential random failures. Note that if the filename doesn?t contain the ,S=<size> before compression, adding it afterwards changes the base

Dovecot and Phpgroupware compatibility
Hi, recently moved our server from mbox format to Maildir format. Almost all the users are very happy with this, since the speed had increased very much. I used mb2md to do the conversion and on this task all the mailboxes that had "." (dot) on their names were converted to "_". But there is one issue with this, we also use the webmail that comes with Phpgroupware, and it uses

A couple of dovecot issues I've noted recently...
Timo et al., I haven't been reading the list in a while, but wanted to report back that we've transitioned to dovecot 1.0.15 and things look to be working very nicely. The platform is Solaris "Nevada" running on x86. I have been saving up a couple of issues to bring to your attention. On our server, we gather all core files, and so we get a good taste of the different things

Compressed backup
Hi I am using rsync for backup on the disks of a Linux backup server. Obviously the server could store more data it the data were compressed. I read the "rsync -> tar" thread. Unfortunately, a compressed file system for Linuthere does not seem to exist yet. However, rsync can use compression for file transfer. Would it be possible to implement an option to store the data on the

[PATCH] Compressed output files
Attached is a patch that implements compressing output files as they're written to disk, uzing zlib. Thus far I've only used it with synchronizing directories on a single machine. What seems to work / what's done: - Synchronizing directories with all files in the target directory gzip'd. Files seem to contain the correct data. Use the option "--gzip-dest". -
