RFC: HTTP based storage API
Hi,
Nearly every popular programming language has an LMTP/POP/IMAP
implementation, most of them suck in many different ways.
I don't know any server or library which provides a well-established,
compatible protocol frontend with an open backend API, which could be
used to easily make a custom storage backend for the LMTP/POP/IMAP
frontend in any language, in any programming paradigm,

mdbox, dsync
I finally migrated my mails from mbox format to mdbox format using
dsync:
1. Stop dovecot, wait a few seconds for processes to die
2. dsync convert mdbox:~/mdbox
3. Change mail_location to mdbox:~/mdbox
4. Check that no new mails arrived during conversion (alternatively I
could have just run dsync again, but I decided not to test my luck)
5. Start dovecot
After fixing a pretty bad bug in dsync

Dovecot v2.0 hg tree
http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-2.0/
I just did the initial commit for master process rewrite, which marks
the beginning of Dovecot v2.0. Several things are still missing/broken,
but at least I was just able to successfully log in using imap :)
I left v1.3 hg tree there for now, but once v2.0 tree is fully usable
I'll just delete the v1.3 tree.
Note the new dovecot-master-example.conf, which

UTF-8 mailbox names in filesystem
Currently mailbox names are stored in IMAP's modified-UTF-7 format in
filesystem. I was wondering about changing this in v2.0. The default
would still be to use mUTF-7 in filesystem, but just adding :UTF8 or
something to mail_location could enable UTF-8.
Any thoughts? Could this be dangerous somehow? UTF-8 enables a lot of
weird characters, perhaps no one really wants to see them on

Design docs in wiki
If you've ever wondered how Dovecot works internally, I've now written
something about it to the wiki. It's probably a bit confusing and there
are a lot of things missing, but it's better than nothing. :)

Dovecot v2.0 wiki
I forked the wiki to
http://wiki1.dovecot.org/ is the old docs for v1.x
http://wiki2.dovecot.org/ is the new docs for v2.0
For now wiki.dovecot.org points to wiki1, but once v2.0 is released I'll
change it to point to wiki2. I symlinked the user directory, so users
should stay synced between the wikis.
The main reason for wiki2 is to be able to describe Dovecot v2.0's
actual behavior

ext3/ext4 performance issue
Wonder if anyone else has actually noticed this and has some kind of

http://dovecot.org/releases/1.1/dovecot-1.1.15.tar.gz
http://dovecot.org/releases/1.1/dovecot-1.1.15.tar.gz.sig
The command pipelining fix is pretty interesting. Wonder how much it
improves performance, especially when deleting lots of messages from a
large mailbox.

v1.2.rc4 released
http://dovecot.org/releases/1.2/rc/dovecot-1.2.rc4.tar.gz
http://dovecot.org/releases/1.2/rc/dovecot-1.2.rc4.tar.gz.sig
I'm pretty hopeful that virtual mailbox code is finally crash-free. If
people don't find many problems from this release, I'm thinking that rc5
could come in a couple of weeks and that would be renamed to v1.2.0
after a week or so if no one has reported bugs.

Maildir dirty syncs
http://dovecot.org/patches/1.1/maildir-dirty-syncs.diff
This patch adds a new maildir_very_dirty_syncs setting. If set to "yes",
Dovecot assumes it's the only one changing the cur/ directory (so other
MDAs can add mails to new/ without problems). This makes it possible to
avoid rescanning the cur/ directory all the time looking for filenames.
It also looks like (in stress testing)

v2.0.beta1 released
http://dovecot.org/releases/2.0/beta/dovecot-2.0.beta1.tar.gz
http://dovecot.org/releases/2.0/beta/dovecot-2.0.beta1.tar.gz.sig
Now that v2.0 is in beta stage I don't expect anything big to change
anymore. The configuration and the APIs shouldn't change in
non-backwards compatible ways. There are still bugs left to be fixed and
some small features to be implemented, but I'd like to
