Converting from UW-IMAP to dovecot - odd client problems
Our installation currently uses an old version of UW-IMAP. Instead of upgrading to the latest version, we're in the process of testing dovecot 1.0.13 on a Solaris 9 machine (using a different set of network ports of course so both the old and new systems can coexist during testing). We've been asking selected users to switch from UW-IMAP to dovecot in order to test various clients

Question about "target is inferior" type of message
We're converting UW-IMAP users here to dovecot. Some of them have seen the error message issued when Thunderbird clients try to delete folders and I understand what's going on (from previous postings) that Dovecot doesn't support mbox subfolders within folders. What puzzles me is that many of these users already have folders within folders (I've found typically 2 levels of

Migrating from UW IMAP - pine - Thunderbird - squirrelmail
Hello! In this email you can find a configuration primer for a Migration from UW IMAP with pine, Thunderbird and squirrelmail as client. For compatibility the mbox format is used. A description for pine with imap acces without entering any password is also discussed. Please use dovecot 1.0beta1 or later for correct handling with pine. Short overview of Mail folders:

Listen on multiple ports possible using same protocol?
Is it possible to have multiple Listen directives in a dovecot configuration file for the same protocol? I am running dovecot-1.2.11 and I want to be able to use the "standard port" as well as a test port: protocol imap { listen = *:143 listen = *:10143 ssl_listen = *:993 ssl_listen = *:10993 for example. Or is this more preferably done by pointing

Problems fetching mail
I'm attempting to replace UW-IMAP with Dovecot, as my UW-IMAP implementation seems to be not working very well. Here's the problem I had with UW-IMAP: In Horde/IMP, messages just wouldn't appear at all. If I opened up the user's IMAP box via an IMAP client, I'd get a Bogus sequence in UID fetch error. So, now I've got Dovecot in place, and I'm getting the following

How to recover a mail box from an assertion failure
I'm running Dovecot version 1.2.11 and getting this assertion error on a user's mail: Panic: file /home/durket/dovecot-1.2.11/src/lib-index/mail-transaction-log-view.c: line 290 (mail_transaction_log_view_set): assertion failed: (min_file_seq != max_file_seq || max_file_seq != view->head->hdr.file_seq || max_file_offset != (uoff_t)-1 || min_file_offset <=

A few questions on shared folders
I'm looking at the possibility of using shared folders to solve a particular problem for my employer and I have a few questions: 1) Can shared folders be in mbox format while allowing the user's mail to be in maildir format? (I think the answer is yes, but wanted to check). 2) What version of dovecot should I be running in order to support shared folders? 3) Is

Migrating to dovecot configuration questions
I am currently running a mail server on an earlier version of Red Hat Advanced Server, sendmail and UW IMAP (imap-2007e). I am considering changing to Dovecot for IMAP but have a few configuration questions in regards to a hashed directory setup. Right now the mail spool for everyone's mailbox is located in /var/mail/first letter of email address/second letter of email address, for

simultaneous access to folder
We have for many years been a UW-IMAP site, with users having their own traditional, private, mbox-format INBOX and folders: almost (but not quite) no complications of shared or simultaneous access. We have just completed a transparent transition to dovecot (official 1.0.0 release). But we have one residual issue affecting one important user account. UW-IMAP specifically only allows single

Thunderbird does not find the right folders :-(
Moika, Overnight, I migrated my user-mails from uw-imap to dovecot-maildir. I used the uw2dovecot.pl script to convert all mails and changed exim, too. Receiving mails works fine allready, but nobody can access the usual subscribed folders with thunderbird. Via "subscriptions" I can find the converted folders in a folder called "_" (underline). People getting mad about me

Question about Outlook workarounds
Do the Outlook workarounds in Dovecot 1.x still apply to current versions of Outlook? Or has Microsoft fixed Outlook such that workarounds are no longer needed in Dovecot (and if so, after what version of Outlook can I remove the workaround settings in my dovecot.conf file)?

dovecot 0.99.14 and imaps (SSL) "hangs"
Hello, I just decided to try dovecot again after a long pause, and I must say that I am very impressed with the speed and resource usage, even when running with UNIX mailboxes. However, I have a problem with SSL. Every two minutes the connection is frozen, and the client has to reconnect after it times out waiting for a response from the server. My IMAP client fetches all headers, and then

comparision with other imap servers and folder sharing
Some praise: Timo, I must say I am super impressed with this product. I do free support a few good friends with small businesses running Linux servers (a mix of RH9, Suse9.2 and gentoo) that I dropped as email and samba servers. I found UW-IMAP to be terrible in every way except that using mbox is sometimes nice for old s/w tools. No need for details re UW-IMAP problems. In early 2004 I found

Dovecot 1.0.3: mbox problems for newly created users
Hi, I am having problems with Dovecot 1.0.3 and Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 when using a new user account without any mbox files present. Directory /home/$user/.imap_mail/ does not exist when Thunderbird first tries to login using IMAP to the account. On login this directory is created with a zero byte Trash file and .subscriptions containing string "Trash", so far, so good. Now I create a

Weird internaldate behavior with 1.0-test80 and mbox folder
Has anyone else encountered weird date behavior with mbox-style folders? I am nearly ready to bite the bullet and convert my UW imap hierarchy (which is in mbx format) to Dovecot. In so doing, I need to convert each UW-specific mbx-format mailboxes to the more portable mbox format, which Dovecot can read. (This is done with the 'mbxcvt' utility that's part of UW.) I am then

folder subscriptions
Hi, I've got a lot of users using uw-imapd(yah, yah, I know) I'd like to get them off of that and onto dovecot at some point in the indeterminate future. so excluding bizarre path resolution things that uw-imapd has left around. is it more or less cp ~/mailboxlist ~/mail/subscriptions? It looks like that - but I wanted to verify :) thanks -sv

Thunderbird, subscriptions, and upgrade to 1.1.3
Hi, I've upgraded from 1.0.7 to 1.1.3. When I did this, my Thunderbird lost its brain and did not show some subscribed folders. squirrelmail also seemed to have issues. Applemail and mutt were fine. The configuration output is below. Hopefully this is just me and just random bizarreness. There wasn't a problem in 1.0.7 but I could have been caught in mid-upgrade. Thunderbird did not

deleting folders containing subfolders with thunderbird (mbox format) bug

Outlook 2003 and Thunderbird IMAP + getting new headers
Hi, We run 1.1.3 and I use Outlook to connect to my IMAP box and a couple of times per day (randomly) when I click certain folders IMAP will start retrieving ALL headers for that folder again ('retrieving new headers')! I don't understand this. What triggers IMAP to do so, why not just retrieve only the NEW headers? Is it Dovecot or Outlook (probably) and what can be done
