maildir and /var/spool/mail/$USER
I was told to use dovecot because it was easier than cyrus. I just upgraded from fc1 to fc3. I am not sure what fc1 used but I think it was cyrus and it worked perfect out of the box no configurations to do. The new cyrus-imapd is not so simple so I got dovecot. I see examples saying to use mbox=~/mail:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%u but when I try that I cannot map mail folders that reside

Maildir/mbox on a per-user basis
Hello, The Wiki indicates that Dovecot can do either mbox or Maildir on a per-user basis: default_mail_env can be overridden in userdb for each user. This works with userdbs supporting the "mail" attribute (eg. passwd-file, SQL, LDAP). How exactly does one do this for passwd-file? Thanks, -Jon -- Jon Nathan jon at rupture.net

INBOX as mbox, other mailboxes as maildir
All, I'm trying to teach dovecot to use the mbox format for /var/mail/%u and maildir for /home/%u/Mail/ but I'm having quite a hard time. This is Dovecot v1.0.beta3 under OpenBSD 3.9 on sparc64. I've been fiddling with default_mail_env and also tried separate namespaces, but all to no avail. Here's some of the things I tried : default_mail_env =

configuration problem: maildir folders and messages not found
Hi Perhaps I've been going too far OT in my previous thread or perhaps I just didn't explain my problem clear enough so forgive me for trying again. I have configured fetchmail to fetch my mail from my ISP's POP3-server. I have set up procmail to filter messages and deliver all non-filtered messages to the folder ".IN-catchall/" in "$HOME/Maildir" After sending

~/.maildir preferable to %h/Maildir and ~/Maildir?
I have a recently deployed dovecot server and am readying another. Upon updating to rc12, I note the following change in the default dovecot.conf file: -default_mail_env = mbox:/var/spool/mail/%u:INDEX=/var/dovecot/%u +mail_location = maildir:~/.maildir Integrating this change to my local dovecot.conf: # formerly used default_mail_env = maildir:%h/Maildir # dovecot default

Segfault problem when using TWO dovecot servers!
Forgive me if this gets submitted twice. I had issues signing up for the listserv but I think I'm strait now. Hi all, I just started working with Dovecot and I'd like to use it for my organization, but I've run into a little problem. So far I love it and it does what I need. One thing we need is to be able to write to multiple mailbox formats on a per user basis (mbox or

Using mail_chroot and default_mail_env
Settings for mail_chroot and default_mail_env are not playing well together. It seems that default_mail_env is verified to exist *before* the chroot but is later used *after* the chroot. A configuration like this: * mail_chroot = /var/mail/example.com/username * default_mail_env = maildir:/Maildir Fails with the message: * stat(/Maildir) failed: No such file or directory As a

Shared Folders?
Hello everybody (esp. Timo ;)), in an attempt to replace our cyrus imapd with something less bloated I have recently evaluated some of the younger imapd implementations, namely bincimap and also dovecot. Bincimap didn't work properly with mozilla for me, dovecot hasn't failed on any test, yet. Unfornationally, since we have been using cyrus for over 1.5 yrs, we pretty much depend on the

default_mail_env auto-detect woes for maildir users
Hello-- I am a fairly new dovecot user and have run into a problem. I am running dovecot 1.0alpha5 (built from source) on a Fedora Core 1 machine. The system has about 400 users with over 80 IMAP users, and we have just transitioned from UW-IMAP. Thus all users are currently still mbox users. I would like to transition them to maildir users (this was the main point for me switching servers), and

mbox & Maildir
Hi, Is it possible for a client to read both mbox and Maildir formats from one server running dovecot? Without changing default_mail_env in dovecot.conf, Maildir folders are working ... they're located in ~/Maildir. No /var/mail/username exists. I have mbox format folders in ~/mail and have been trying to get pine to find them by adding pine folder collections. I always end up back in

INBOX as Maildir and folders as mbox
Hi, I was wondering whether anybody has managed to get Dovecot 1.0 to store INBOX as Maildir and folders as mbox. I've tried something like default_mail_env = mbox:/folders/user/mail:INBOX=maildir:/inboxes/maildir/user:INDEX=/indexes/user but it doesn't seem to work (treats INBOX as mbox). I'm hoping to move some INBOXes from mbox on local disk to Maildir on nicely-mirrored NetApp

Setting location for indexes
We have NFS-mounted user directories which cause significant problems with stale file handles: dovecot: IMAP(uid): fstat() failed with file /home/uid/mail/.imap/INBOX/dovecot.index.log: Stale NFS file handle (a) why can't it just close the file and re-open ? (b) is there a way to specify with the 'default_mail_env' (or in some other way) the location of **only** the indexes (and let

mbox and pop3, maildir and imap
Hi, Been reading a lot of posts about dovecot configuration, but can't really figure out if what I want is even possible or how to achieve this. My setup is simple : One linux machine that collects mail from my provider and sorts them for me and my wife, where my email is stored in Maildir format in ~myuser/.maildir and my wife's email is stored in mbox format in

MAILDIR environment
from docs/mail-storages.txt: "Also as a special case, if MAILDIR environment exists, maildir storage is used with the directory specified in it." Forgive me if this seems obvious, but is this talking about setting MAILDIR as an enivornment variable? I have it set on my system in both /etc/profile and ~/.bash_profile: MAILDIR=/path/to/maildir/ export MAILDIR and have confirmed this

Maildir folder hierarchy question
Hello all, I am trying to set up Dovecot to use a particular maildir folder hierarchy and have a problem that relates to the inbox. the folder hierarchy I want in /.../Maildir/ is: .inbox cur new tmp .imap.index.files-for-inbox .sent-items cur new tmp .imap.index.files-for-sent-items however the hierarchy that dovecot gives me is .inbox (unused) .INBOX .imap.index.files-for-.INBOX

INBOX at /var in maildir storage format
Hi I'm trying to figure out how to set default_mail_env to support such config: INBOX is in '/var/mail/%u/' (note last slash at the end, %u is an folder with new/tmp/cur subdirs - standard maildir structure). Other imap folders are stored as files (in mbox format) in direcotry '%h/Mail/'. Please advise.

not creating homedirs when using maildir format
Hi all, I'm in the process of setting up dovecot, but for some reason, it's not creating home directories if they don't already exist. I have the following line in dovecot.conf: default_mail_env = maildir:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u I have set permissions on /home to allow everyone full access, so creating directories in /home by dovecot non-root processes shouldn't be a

IMAP Folder paths
Hello, we like to use dovecot, but our old imapd used to store the paths of the folder in the file ~/.mailboxlist. This file contains something like this: mail/read mail/dovecot .netscape/imap/mailbox .Mail/foo Each line with a path to one mbox folder. And please pay attention that there is no path to the inbox, because this is stored on the server... Is there a way to use this
