0.99 mail env
Greetings, all
Last night I migrated our mail between two machines... both running dovecot
0.99.xx.
In the process, I wanted to make some small changes, namely that new mail be
delivered to mboxs in /var/mail/%u and IMAP mail stored in Maildirs at ~/.imap ...
I tried using:
default_mail_env = maildir:~/.imap/:INBOX=mbox:/var/mail/%u
But had no luck. Is it only 1.0 that can work with two

Moving to Dovecot
Hi there,
I'm currently running IMAP with Courier and POP3 with Solid-POP3d. I'd
like to migrate IMAP and POP3 to both use Dovecot.
All this works fine in testing, except for the fact that I have two
types of users for legacy reasons.
One type of user has a Maildir-style inbox at ~/Maildir/
The other type has a mbox-style inbox at ~/Mailbox
Is it possible to make Dovecot look for

Odd Error: Expecting '='
Hi all,
I'm working on setting up dovecot on a test system. When I try to
start dovecot I get this error:

Line 504 in my config is this:

Shared namespaces
Hi all,
I'm trying to replace the "Public Folders" functionality in Exchange server. At first I thought it'd be something easily do-able with an IMAP server so I immediately thought of Dovecot. I setup what I though would work and things started to go a little screwy with subscription settings and the like.
I started off by making a public maildir folder (in

Questions about differences to other mail servers
I just transferred over my first server from Suse Linux with
uw-imap(ipop3/imap2003) to CentOS with Dovecot (0.99). I didn't find any
problems in the testing phase, but when the actual transfer into
production happened I found a few problems crop up:
1. Dovecot wants to chdir in the user's home directory even when logging
in via POP3. However, the mailboxes for POP3 are all in

Two strange behaviours with dovecot+postfix+squirrelmail
Hi all,
About a week ago I was forced to migrate my main (production) email server from RH9 to
Centos4.1. The installation has dovecot-0.99.11 + postfix-2.1.5 and >600 mbox accessed email
accounts.
Number 1. Some users accessing thru squirremail (installed in my webserver) can read their
INBOX at /var/spool/mail directory but when trying to delete a message they receive the

new mails don't always show
Hi,
I am having some trouble with dovecot (0.99.14) and maildir. Some users
are reporting that sometimes, they don't get (pop3, various clients) new
mails for a while even though they should.
I checked and confirmed this: mails were delivered by MTA (sendmail,
procmail). But when the problem existed, the new mails were in cur/, not
new/ and dovecot would not report any new messaged to the

dovecot with Calendar or Contacts?
When I attempted to import my Contacts list into dovecot, my mail
client told me that the IMAP server did not support "Special" folders.
Is there a way to to do the contacts, or sync up Contacts & Calendar from a
database or something else?
I'm using both Thunderbird and Outlook.
Thanks.

A tail of joy...
So, I _finally_ got the time to upgrade from 0.99.14 ... which I told myself
I'd upgrade from once 1.0 was released... (yep, I've been _that_ busy :)
So I read the Wiki page on 0.99->1.0 transition, and went through the config
file - for all of about 5 or 10 minutes.
I logged in at 11pm when nobody else should be using it, restarted dovecot
with the new version, and logged in.

Dovecot LDA - Performance/issues versus postfix delivery? Also, installing on OS X?
Can anyone give me an idea of whether or not dovecot-lda can solve the
following issue: We seem to have constantly-corrupting dovecot* files
for people who fit one (or more) of the following categories:
1) 1000+ message inboxes;
2) multiple clients simultaneously checking mail;
3) people receiving a lot of mail, and/or the server receiving and
trying to deliver a single message to all users at

Dovecot imap with Postfix and using Thunderbird as client
Hi,
I just recently installed dovecot, and I am having the following problem:
If I send an email to my account on this new machine, I can log in via
SSH and use the unix mail command, and instantly my email is visible.
If I turn on Thunderbird, it will show my new message. If Thunderbird
was already on and had already checked the mailbox, even if I click on

Dovecot imap with Postfix and using Thunderbird as client
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knew of the mysterious fix to this problem that
Curtis describes in his followup:
"I vaguely remember something like this, but I don't recall the fix"
I recently installed dovecot on a server running RHEL4-AS-U2 and have updated
to RHEL latest dovecot package, dovecot-0.99.11-2.EL4.1.
Seeing as this is close to the version Curtis is running

Compressed maildir
Greetings,
I noticed a while back someone posted a patch/plugin that allowed Dovecot to
use compressed mbox files. I'm now wondering how far that would put us from
having compressed maildir? I have a server with more CPU than disk space, and
while I can buy more HDD space, my backup solution doesn't make that practical.
It seems to me that when looking for a message file, if it

Dovecot-lda/deliver - how to deliver root's mail?
There's a good chance I could be missing something obvious here, as I
can't find much documentation on the LDA other than on the wiki, which
is sparse. Local mail delivery works for normal users, but when
attempting to deliver mail for root I get this error:
Jan 30 13:42:50 apollo deliver: Running as root isn't permitted
Both sendmail and dovecot run as root on my server -

Save sent mail on server
Hi dovecot list users,
currently we have some email accounts which get maintained by different
people. If any of this users sends a mail, it is only saved on his local
machine, but not on the imap server. But i'll need them to get saved on
the mail server for backup purposes and that every user can see which
mails have been sent through this account. Is this possible?
Thanks in advance

mail shown throught outlook, shows todays date
Hi all
I seem to be sitting with an interesting situation where by I need to copy mail from Exchange to dovecot (Maildir)
I used a mixture of solution (Moz Thunderbird, fetchmail and outlook) to copy and test the mail.
The interesting thing is, once I have some mail on the dovecot, the date displayed on Mozilla is correct, but the mail shown throught outlook, shows todays date (thats for all

access to root mail through Dovecot on VPS
Hello,
I just installed dovecot and postfix on a Fedora Core VPS.
The VPS will not allow me to ssh directly as user "root"
i.e.: I must first login as a non-root user and then "su" into root.
My question is: is there a way to read my root mail through
Dovecot ? How should I setup the Thunderbird account ?
Thank you...

Mac mail copy/delete problems w/1.0b2
Hi,
Mac mail (a horribly mis-behaved client, it seems), has a horribly hard time deleting/copying large blocks of messages from one folder to another. The basic symptom is:
1. Select a bunch of messages
2. Click on delete
3. Wait for a _very_ long time.
It also seems very slow on copying, so it may be the "trash folder copy on delete" that is really slowing it down.

new configure-option --disable-index
Hello,
I experimented with dovecot the whole evening yesterday and the
mailserver worked fine since there haven't been that much users
connecting to it. I'm using dovecot 1.0.alpha5 as pop3 and pop3s server.
The maildirs are mounted through NFS and since there is no nfslockd
running I disabled mmap in the config and told dovecot to use dotlock.
Also I experienced, that dovecot was

Problem with dovecot and system crashing
Hi all,
I am running dovecot on a linux server (FC3) in conjunction with
Sendmail. My configuration is quite vanilla and I am having the
following problem: occasionally (once every 3-10 days) the dovecot
server will become unresponsive and attempting to access mail via pop3
will produce an error message on the client side.
As best as I can tell, the dovecot process dies because if I restart
it
