No value for $TERM and no -T specified
I just customized my prompt with a PS1= variable. Since updating my
.bashrc this way, when I try to run commands remotely with ssh I get
this:
****************************************
[scarolan at kalki:~]$ ssh server pwd
No value for $TERM and no -T specified/home/scarolan
No value for $TERM and no -T specified

Anyone know why this is happening?

Permissions problem
What am I doing wrong here? I need to be able to write to /var/cvs.
This used to work before I moved these groups into an LDAP directory
instead of /etc/group:
[scarolan at watcher:/var/cvs]$ touch test.txt
touch: cannot touch `test.txt': Permission denied
[scarolan at watcher:/var/cvs]$ ls -ld

suspend / hibernate via lid / button doesn't work
Damjan,
Glad to hear that worked for you.
I don't know if the gnome people can make this very much easier.
Different version of different linux distros might invoke hibernate
differently. How would they know which one to map to the lid button?
Also, some people might want to invoke sleep rather than hibernate. If
there were system commands which were persistent over all distros and

In the market for a new (old) laptop
Changes at my day job (we have a big merger being finalized), has me in
the market for a new laptop.
They may require me to only run the approved XP build on the system they
provide.
I do not know if they will fund another unit for me or not, so I am
looking to go cheap. Here is what I am looking for:
Runs Centos (duh!)
Supports Suspend to memory as well as to disk.

acpid events failing after first suspend
Hello
I've configured acpid on my laptop to make the powerbutton hibernate the laptop. I modified /etc/acpid/events/power.conf with the following content:
event=PWRF
action=/usr/bin/pm-hibernate
On the first boot it works like it should, but after the laptop has resumed, the powerbutton doesn't respond anymore.
This is an extract from /var/log/acpid when the powerbutton responds:

3.4.1 suspend / hibernate resume not working.
Hi guys,
i''ve read, a few threads ago, that suspend/resume should work on 3.4
kernels.
Actually it doesn''t work for me, the system goes on suspend, keeping
monitors on and power led blinking, but it never resumes, I always have to
brutally shutdown it. CONFIG_XEN_ACPI_PROCESSOR is set.
Same thing it always did with previouses kernels.
It works flawlessy if I start the system

Help with iptables rule for blocking UDP port 53
I would like to block all DNS queries that come from one particular ip
address. I used TCPdump to verify that the queries were in fact,
coming from this IP:
[scarolan at server:~]$ sudo tcpdump -n udp port 53 and src 10.100.1.1
tcpdump: listening on eth0
11:12:17.162100 10.100.1.1.19233 > 10.100.1.61.domain: 14270+ A?

Could someone help with the proper syntax

Suspend / Hibernate
Greetings folks - has anyone reported success getting ACPI
suspend-to-ram and/or hibernation to disk working with CentOS 4.3?
If so, how'd you set it up?
Thanks

CentOS 5.0 suspend to disk (hibernate)
The RHEL 5 release notes for their desktop version claim
"Improved ACPI support with features such as suspend to disk"
but this isn't working with CentOS 5.
I've installed all the packages and updates for CentOS 5 i386 on a
ThinkPad T43 but when selecting suspend, Gnome pops up a URL to a site
that didn't seem to give a solution.
Gnome makes an entry in /var/log/messages

Centos 5, X dies, I cry
I just installed Centos 5 for my notebook (HP compaq nc4010) on a
separate drive (than this one that has Centos 4.5).
When I first booted after all the setup, X did not start. hmm.
Rebooted, and X came up fine. I did a bunch of customizing and upgraded
the kernel

Rebooted X started fine. I checked some things out then tried the

Getting JPilot working
I am trying to get JPilot working.
I have configed gnome-pilot-applet, but it is not talking to the USB
connected Treo650.
My Treo has my name as the user, so from the applet, I see also a userid
(my UID on this system it seems). I try to put that on the Treo and
nothing happens. I have enabled the Backup Conduit.
I am using /dev/pilot, which shows up when my Treo is connected via its
USB

Iptables not blocking UDP port 53
I'm attempting to block access to port 53 from internet hosts for an
internal server. This device is behind a gateway router so all
traffic appears to come from source ip 10.100.1.1. Here are my
(non-working) iptables rules:
-A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -s 10.100.1.1 -m tcp -p tcp --dport 53 -j REJECT

Live CD Planning systems
My company supplies me with a very nice HP nc2400. Much faster, more
memory, etc than my old HP nc4010.
Problem is the drive is not swappable, and they encrypt the drive (the
OS is XP).
The nc2400 has a DVD/CDRW and 2 USB 2.0 ports so I was thinking.....
Make a Live DVD with everything I need but map
/etc /root /home and /var/log (and what else?) to a USB flash drive

df command reports inaccurate results?
Can anyone help make sense of this? This is an ext3 partition. It's
only showing 403GB out of 426GB used, but then it says only 632MB
available? Where'd the extra ~25GB go?

Hibernating a laptop with the power button (Thinkpax X31) under CentOS 5.4
I am having a weird problem trying to get hibernation to work when I
press the power button on my Thinkpad X31 under CentOS 5.4.
I've modified /etc/acpi/events/power.conf to contain:
# ACPID config to power down machine if powerbutton is pressed, but only if
# no gnome-power-manager is running
event=button/power.*
action=/bin/ps awwux | /bin/grep gnome-power-manager | /bin/grep -qv grep ||
