Turning off a notebook's screen
My notebook is an HP Compaq nc4010 running current Centos 5.0 with the Gnome desktop. I have been having problems with my notebook's screen never really going off. I lock my screen and the backlight stays on. I push the close monitor button, or even close the unit, the backlight turns off for maybe 10 seconds then turns back on. Actually I just did a test again, and when I push the

Centos 5.2 upgrade - urlopen error unknown url type: media
My first notebook upgrade: I repaired my old HP nc4010 (bought a new hinge on ebay) and realized this was the perfect way to test out the upgrade to 5.2 before doing it on my production notebook. First I updated to 'current' 5.1 (by current I mean I have not synced my 5.1 local repo since building my 5.2 repo). I had not used my nc4010 for a while and the kernel was at

Standy (suspend to RAM) problem
Hi, I have a Packard Bell Easynote B notebook with CentOS 4.2 on it. I activated the standby option and it seems that entering the standby is OK (in a few seconds the display and hdd are closed, the power led is clipping). But when I try to restart the notebook, the hdd sems like it reads something, but the display remains blank. Also ctrl+alt+backspace or ctrl+alt+del don't have any efect.

Centos 5, X dies, I cry
I just installed Centos 5 for my notebook (HP compaq nc4010) on a separate drive (than this one that has Centos 4.5). When I first booted after all the setup, X did not start. hmm. Rebooted, and X came up fine. I did a bunch of customizing and upgraded the kernel Rebooted, X did not start. Rebooted X started fine. I checked some things out then tried the Suspend feature. Not

MOre on buring ISOs
So right now I have installed k3b on this notebook. I am using my Storix DVD/CDRW usb drive. I can read cds with it. Cannot burn CDs. First k3b suggests slowing down (from 8x to 4x). Then use TAO. Then it gave up. So I try cdrecord directly. -checkdrive finds some interesting things. Got to close the drive manually; cdrecord says it can't. then try a cdrecord -v dev=dev/scd0 sample.iso

APM and suspend to swap
I have been delving into how to get this HP NC4010 to suspend. I think the practice of just closing the unit for 15+ min inside my backpack as I move to the next meeting is what cooked my drive... So it seems that Debian users have been successful with APM: http://www.proulx.com/~bob/nc4000/ and http://www.gag.com/~bdale/nc4000/ So my Centos related questions are: I need to turn acpi=off

Re: wxRuby: How to add a scrollbar to a Wx::Notebook tab
I''m going to cross-post this to the wxRuby ML because I know of at least one wxRuby expert who does not subscribe to ruby-talk. In the market for a new (old) laptop
Changes at my day job (we have a big merger being finalized), has me in the market for a new laptop. They may require me to only run the approved XP build on the system they provide. I do not know if they will fund another unit for me or not, so I am looking to go cheap. Here is what I am looking for: Runs Centos (duh!) Supports Suspend to memory as well as to disk. Bootable from

Hi, strange issue. Have several computers in office. From any of the computers there is no issue browsing any of the samba servers. There is one windows 7 notebook that also can browse any of the samba servers but no computer can access it. In other words from say from a windows 10 VM, click the notebook name in Network, immediately there is a popup saying it cannot access \\computer_name Try

Getting JPilot working
I am trying to get JPilot working. I have configed gnome-pilot-applet, but it is not talking to the USB connected Treo650. My Treo has my name as the user, so from the applet, I see also a userid (my UID on this system it seems). I try to put that on the Treo and nothing happens. I have enabled the Backup Conduit. I am using /dev/pilot, which shows up when my Treo is connected via its USB

System freezes with i8042_panic_blink on suspend
Hello, I am using CentOS 4.6 (2.6.9-67.plus.c4) on a toshiba tecra 8000 notebook. If closing the panel, "Panel Power On/Off" is enabled in bios, the notebook does suspend. But after opening the panel, the notebook completely freezes. If the suspend only takes a few minutes, then everything is working fine. But if the suspend takes a time more than five or ten minutes, the system
