Mailbox isn't a valid mbox file
Hello all,
I have a new installation of Fedora 4 and Dovecot 1.4.Alpha4
A small percentage of my users are getting unable to pop mail from a client
(ie: Outlook), they get continually prompted for username/password. The
error they get is: Mailbox isn't a valid mbox file.
When I look in the file, I don't see anything unusual. There's not much
info on the Internet about this

New Fedora/Sendmail Install Assistance
Hello everyone,
I've narrowed down my problem, so this should be an easy one for some smart
person out there.
I am moving from an old sendmail/Fedora 2 box to a new sendmail/Fedora 4 box
and want to try Dovecot for pop3. The problem is, I can't get it to work.
I have 9000 email accounts I will be moving to the new box. I've already
tried and failed once. The problem is, Dovecot

Best way to upgrade from 1.0a4 to 1.0a5
Hello all,
I have 1.0 Alpha 4. Is it better to shut down sendmail, uninstall dovecot
1.0a4 then install 1.0a5, or just install 1.0a5 over the top of 1.0a4?
Thanks,
Cliff

FW: How to log POP3 events
Ok, I think I have that figured out.
I made the following mods:
disable_plaintext_auth = no
pop3_uidl_format = %08Xu%08Xv
and it seems to work.
Now...about those enhanced logging capabilities. As promised, I see the
enhanced logging.
What does TOP and RETR mean? (I checked the manual first)

How to detect out-of-sync condition
Thanks.
I use dovecot's lda and dovecot's sieve filter.
So it looks like I need to compare the index/mailbox mtimes as you suggest.
What am I looking for?
I see that the indexes are updated when I run the resync.
I checked my mailbox (that was not resynced) and noticed that
dovecot.index last update was 16 days ago.
So am I resyncing if the gap is over x days?
If so, is there a way to

Graceful shutdown
Hello all,
I am running Dovecot v1alpha4 on Fedora 4 from the command line (as opposed
to deamon). Is there a recommended way to shut it down gracefully? Or do I
just use killall -9 dovecot? I'm not using the included version, so I can't
do SERVICE DOVECOT STOP.
Thanks,
Cliff

How to log POP3 events
Hello all,
Thanks for your help getting me started. I have Dovecot running now.
When I troubleshoot customer email problems, I need to be able to see the
number of emails they popped.
In /var/log/maillog, Dovecot just tells me that they authenticated, but not
what happened after they authenticated. With pop3d, I saw how many emails
they popped. Can I set that in Dovecot? I checked the

setting up home directories
Hello,
I have not been using the home directory but I read in MailLocation.txt that
I probably should. Does dovecot create each directory? What does it put in
there? My server uses mbox format. My users all look like this:
[root at sendmail log]# finger chayes
Login: chayes Name: 50387.00
Directory: /home/chayes Shell: /sbin/nologin
Never logged in.

New Install Assistance
Hello,
I built a Fedora 4 sendmail server to replace our old one. I wanted to try
the stock Dovecot popper (we currently use pop3d). I tried implementing
Dovecot this morning and failed.
All I want to use is the POP portion (no IMAP). From what I could find on
the Internet, all I had to do is change dovecot.conf protocols line to read
like this: protocols = pop3
Apparently, that wasn't

dictionary attack defense
Does dovecot have any dictionary attack defenses yet?
In the past I have had to implement defense from outside dovecot, but
since dovecot is at the front lines and therefore is the first to know
I'm hoping by now there is something we can set. For example, a limit
on access failures per minut/hour/day or some such. If not why not?

Mailbox isn't a valid mbox file (dovecot 1.0-0.beta8.2.fc5)
Hello,
I have upgraded my dovecot-0.99.13-3.FC3 to dovecot-1.0-0.beta8.2.fc5
recently and now am having weird problem.
If somebody's mailbox has the first line in a form of
From "User Name" <user at host.domain.edu> Thu Oct 7 14:20:00 1999
instead of
From user at host.domain.edu Thu Oct 7 14:20:00 1999
then that mailbox couldn't be precessed by dovecot. It

Bug-report for rc28: Mailbox isn't a valid mbox file
Hi,
When I try to open the attached mbox file I get the following warning in
Thunderbird 1.5.0.10:
'The current command failed. The e-mail server responded: Mailbox isn't
a valid mbox file'.
I also tried this with squirrelmail, with the same result.
The Dovecot version is dovecot-1.0.rc28, compiled from source. The
attached mbox was correctly read from, and written to in earlier

removing the () from the first line of the mbox fixed it.
The line:

Mailbox isn't a valid mbox file
Getting "Mailbox isn't a valid mbox file" on 1.2rc2 after transferring mail
from an ancient 0.99.13 system. The first line of the file looks ok.
Curiously, it's one of my archival folders of this list. Here's the first
header from the top of the file:

Mailbox isn't a valid mbox file
Keep getting this error within Squirrelmail (and other clients) on one
particular user's mailbox file:
ERROR: Could not complete request.
Query: SELECT "INBOX.Backup"

I've snipped the first and last message off of it, still no love.

Performance settings for 500-1000User/per day
hi,
we have 2.0.13 running and most works well, but today we had some minor
problems: The IMAP login process takes sometimes to much time. Over
webmail (Roundcube 0.5.0.3) login wasn't sometimes possible, the normal
clients hasn't any problems, until they login.
We had only ~ 20-30 active accounts, but 50-60 sessions. The most are
Apple products (Ip*/Mac/. ..)because they have 4 sessions

Problem with bodystructure/partial fetch using 1.1*
Hi there
I'm using dovecot-1.1b2/b3 with deliver. All information is stored in an
SQL database and no errors related to this issue are written to the logs
(actually I get no errors at all).
I've run into at problem; FETCH BODYSTRUCTURE is broken after upgrading to
dovecot 1.1b2 (same issue with 1.1b3).
BODUSTRUCTURE only returns information from the first section (with
