pop3 retr error
Hello,
I'm getting the following error while Mozilla Mail is downloading >4000
emails:
The RETR command did not succeed. Error retrieving message. Mail server
xxx responded: Message is deleted.
So what's the error? Can't I retrieve a message, that has been marked as
deleted before? If the Mesage-ID wouldn't exist, the error message would
be different. I don't know

agent forwarding with v2
I'm confused about the status of auth agent forwarding while using v2
protocols. I found an old newsgroup post that said it was not available but
an entry in the ChangeLog entry dated 20001113 seems to indicate that it was
added.
So. Does agent forwarding work while using v2 protocols? I've been unable to
get it to work since I switched to using v2.
Thanks,
Ben

Detecting unused accounts
I'm looking for a way to figure out which accounts have not been logged in
to in over n days. It occurs to me that, perhaps, the way to do this
would be to look at the mtime on one of the dovecot-maintained files, like
'dovecot-uidlist'. Is there a particular file that would be modified on
(almost) every login, whether it be via POP or IMAP?

High Load average on NFS Spool - v.2.1.15 & 2.2.13
I have two servers pointing to an NFS mounted mail spool with dovecot.?
Since I recently switched from using Dovecot v1.X, I have been
experiencing high CPU use with the two Dovecot servers. I am not certain
why they are not well behaved.? Here is the configuration information.
This configuration is currently running at a load average of 17.

eudora issue
There seems to be a protocol mismatch between eudora and dovecot when
using pop. The login interchange with, for example, mozilla, is as
follows:

MO: CAPA
DC: +OK
DC: CAPA
DC: TOP
DC: USER
DC: UIDL
DC: RESP-CODES
DC: STLS

MO: PASS xxxxxxxx

But with eudora, with apparently equivalent

dovecot died
Hello,
today our dovecot imap server died. The following message appeared in
the logfile:
dovecot: Mar 23 07:00:58 Error: pipe() failed: Too many open files
We have one dovecot instance for pop3 and one for imap, so while the
pop3-service was still available, the imap-service was not running any more.
I've seen a lots of users keeping there imap-connections idle for hours,
often more

Troubleshooting ssh-agent forwarding w/ v2 protocols
OK. I've had a few replies to my earlier question about auth agent
forwarding that indicate that it is currently supported. So now I'm confused
as to why it is not working for me. I'm trying to chain between servers.
With v1 I could load my key into the ssh-agent on my workstation (a) and ssh
to server b and ssh from there to server c, all without typing a
passphrase/password. Now

Moving existing MD5 passwords to LDAP?
I have a dovecot installing working quite well for around 1000 users using
passwd-file authentication. I'm moving to LDAP and would sure love to be
able to migrate the existing MD5 passwords.
I've tried using ldapmodify to set "userPassword" to
{CRYPT}$1$H8JE0k5X$y.ptShgYbOgWF.99lX88N1
and
{MD5}$1$H8JE0k5X$y.ptShgYbOgWF.99lX88N1
In both cases, ldapmodify exits without errors

NoSQL Storage Backend
Hello,
I found a posting on the mailing list from 2008 "Adding new storage
backend to Dovecot" while searching for POP3 and IMAP servers, that
allow to use a NoSQL backend rather than a traditional file system.
The problem with traditional filesystems is, that they are very limited.
You cannot easily extend it, even with RAID 10 all messages may be lost
due to a RAID controller

dovecot POP3 log shows too many identical RETR entries
Hello,
Dovecot log is showing too many POP3 RETR entries which are identical
lines. I also suspect that it is causing high pop traffic eating most of
the network bandwidth. Here are some of the lines out of 11009 in a
day. Such pattern is observed only for few users. dovecot version is
2.1.17.

Solution: NFS & Dovecot!
Hi folks!
It looks like Timo nailed down the NFS issues we've been seeing here in
last night's CVS build.
Anyone running Dovecot in a high-usage environment should check this out.
Here are some relevant ChangeLog updates that seem to address the problem:

the untangles i have been plagued by Thunderbird Errors while trying to

nfs and pop3
Hi,
I'm working with dovecot 1.0.beta2 for pop3 only and have set
index=memory, so no indizes are created on the disk. pop3_uidl_format is
set to %f. The maildirs are located on an nfs-share.
So generally, this setup is very similar to what qmail-popup and
qmail-pop3d does. However, everytime I'm switching from qmail-pop3d to
dovecot, the system load increases from less than 2 to more

new configure-option --disable-index
Hello,
I experimented with dovecot the whole evening yesterday and the
mailserver worked fine since there haven't been that much users
connecting to it. I'm using dovecot 1.0.alpha5 as pop3 and pop3s server.
The maildirs are mounted through NFS and since there is no nfslockd
running I disabled mmap in the config and told dovecot to use dotlock.
Also I experienced, that dovecot was

Good Day All! I am attempting to configure deliver as our LDA. I am
also configuring the server to use Postfix instead of Sendmail. I

upside the head and tell me why I am getting "user unknown" errors?

Again: Occasional problem with POP3-Download
Hello everyone,
in february I posted the mail below[1].
I can now reproduce the problem. When filling up a mailbox with postfix'
smtp-source with dozens of identical mails, then it is never possible
for me to fetch one single mail out of the mailbox. The process of
fetching mail via POP3 always fails. It makes no difference which mail
client I use. I have tested KMail, Outlook and
