Update to base release
Hello All,
We have some machines running CentOS 4 Update 4 (4.4). We want to update
these boxes to the stock CentOS 4 Update 8 (4.8).
We have the 4.8 iso images. Is it possible to use up2date and have it use
the 4.8 mounted iso images on a remote (install) server as the repository?
The ISO's are accessible through http. These servers are remote with no
CD/DVD option to upgrade that way.
I have

CentOS 7 Update from DVD
I am trying to find how to update CentOS 7 using the DVD.
In the past, C6, just insert the DVD, select "install or update" from the
boot menu, continue, and later select update and continue... done... reboot.
I dont see that on the C7 boot disk.
How is that accomplished?
Thanks,
Jerry

more than one repo with --disablerepo
What's the correct syntax for something like the following:
yum check-update --disablerepo=dag ivazquez Extras Misc
this runs "dead" and doesn't do a check-update. Use kommas? Something
else? man just tells to use glob exp, but what about multiple repo's?

Hi,
I have just installed 4.1 on a new Dell Latitude d610. It does
not automount the CDs. When I mount the CD manually I get:

The CD writer is an Philips IDE: CDRW/DVD-ROM CDD5263
Here is my mtab:
$ cat /etc/mtab
/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00 / ext3 rw 0 0
none /proc proc rw 0 0

Xorg problem
I updated to Centos 6.8.
Every thing is working, except Xorg does not startup.
When I look at top, it seems that Xorg keeps trying but not
succeeding to start.
Any idea what the problem might be?
Thanks

Samba not obeying locking = no from smb.conf file
I have the following share in my smb.conf :
[cdrom]
comment = Samba server's CD-ROM
writable = no
locking = no
path = /media/cdrecorder
public = yes
When I go to that share from a Windows workstation it does still lock as
you can see:
[root@pc843 ~]# lsof | grep cdrecorder

I am going to see if I can find someone in the organization with a Red Hat account to open the bug. In the meantime, I came up with a workaround. I wanted to see if I could role the updates back to CentOS 6.7 since the system was 6.7

Puppet and yum repositories
I''m running puppet 0.24.6 on CentOS 5.2 from a puppetmaster on a
virtual server to a variety
of client servers both virtual and metal running either CentOS 5.2 or
Fedora Core 10. I want to
extend this to servers running RHEL 5 (and 6) in the near future.
My problem is I have puppet set up with all repositories (mirrored
locally using cobbler)

Problems installing packages from the CD
So I did a minimal install of centos 7 vm guest just to find out it did not
install perl. Since as of right now I have no properly functioning network
on that machine (different issue; we can talk about that in another post),
I went for the next best thing: install CD.
I grabbed the CentOS-7-x86_64-Everything-1611.iso CD (around 8GB), attached
it to the guest, and mounted it on /mnt. Then I

yumrepo err
I am just starting with puppet to replace a ''homegrown'' config
distribution system and it is looking very promising, i will be playing
with the templating next.
I have run into an error when attempting to disable the shipped repo''s
with CentOS 4.4. See the relevant info below.
This is obviously a problem when repo definitions include multi-line
baseurl''s.

CentOS 5.0 - Yum install using the install cd's as the RPM source
What is the mechanism or procedure for installing additional packages from the six CentOS 5.0 CD's using Yum, assuming a secured server with no outside internet connection?
Debian based distributions are able to use the package manager to search for and install from the CD's, and I'm looking for the CentOS equivalent.
Obviously, it's possible to install "manually" from

installing Microsoft Office under wine
I have been unable to install Microsoft Office 2000 under wine on
several Fedora Linux machines. The problem seemed to start with the
June 2004 release of wine and has persisted for every version I have
tried up to and including the latest 12/01/2004 version.
I have tried both RPM install and compiling from source with similar
results.
I have one machine running the May 2004 wine that

Problems with SATA DVD+-RW drive
I just got a Dell Dimension e521 (AMD 64 x2, nVidia MCP51 chipset) and
so far it has been fine. Today I tried to burn some CD-R and DVD-R
disks and have been able to do nothing but make coasters. The drive is
a TSST TS-H653a (Samsung OEM) and does have the current firmware.
Playing back data, audio, and video disks work just fine, but recording
is a different matter.
The drive shows up as
