dovecot 0.99 + apple mail.app
hello all,
first off, a success story. after much testing and preperation, we've
switched from uw-imap to dovecot. i am not kidding when i say that
we have experienced an order of magnitude decrease in server load
(previously load peaks were 40-60, now they are 3-4). so, suffice to
say that the mail admins here are very happy :)
one problem that has come up though is particular to

dovecot 0.99.14 and imaps (SSL) "hangs"
Hello,
I just decided to try dovecot again after a long pause, and I must say
that I am very impressed with the speed and resource usage, even when
running with UNIX mailboxes.
However, I have a problem with SSL. Every two minutes the connection is
frozen, and the client has to reconnect after it times out waiting for
a response from the server.
My IMAP client fetches all headers, and then

aha! (was apple mail vs. v0.99)
it seems that when you say "check for new mail" in apple mail, it sends
a NOOP to the imap server to get the response. in uw, the conversation
is something like:
25 NOOP
25 OK NOOP completed
26 NOOP
* 2796 EXISTS
* 7 RECENT
26 OK NOOP completed
however, with dovecot, if it has already notified the client that new
mail has arrived, it will look something like:
* 24 EXISTS
* 2 RECENT

outstanding issues with 0.99.13
hi list,
i'm in the process of testing dovecot before a hopeful switchover from
uw-imap/qpopper to dovecot, primarily to get off of the uw-imap/mbox
combo and moved to Maildir. i think we've worked out the logistics to
avoid any service downtime, with only a short window of a few minutes
per user for when we convert from mbox to maildir format.
however, during testing a few issues have

Apple Mail for 10.4/Shadow/SSL -> Problem.
I have recently gotten Dovecot running on my Solaris 5.8 mail server in order
to replace UW IMAP. I'm currently testing it out with mail clients popular
amongst my users. It's been working very well, with one vital exception.
Apple Mail on OS X 10.4 is not completing authentication (I don't think
it's even getting that far).
All I'm seeing in the syslog for attempts with

Testing Specific Hypothesis
Hi All!
I am interested in testing whether the means for the data I am investigating
are equal to a specific value - let's say 0.01. I have already run a
one-way ANOVA and know that the differences in the means are not
significant, so now I want to know what values the means take on. "otestme"
is the data I am working with (it would be hard for me to get into a form
that would be

Email client dowloads previously read messages as new during migration.
I am migrating from UW to dovecot and using mbox. I have been able to find
mbox to maildir migration information and tools; however, I have had little
luck finding any tool or information for performing such a migration where I
wish to keep mbox. ( I know I should migrate to MailDir, but in the case I
wish to take baby steps.)
I have setup dovecot pop3 communication and I go to my email client

quetion about duplicate messages
Hi,
we recently switched from Imap-Uw to Dovecot as a pop3 server.
I was wondering why people who have the flag 'Leave messages on server'
in their email client (Outlook, Outlook Expres) that they receive
duplicates of their stored mail?
Is it because Dovecot doesn't know that the messages has already been
popped by Imap Uw or is the email client which thinks there are new
messages

Question about Dovecot and NFS
Hi,
We are using mbox and UW IMAP, and are having issues because UW IMAP does not support multiple client access when you use NFS for the mail files. I've done some research (see the comments after my 2 questions below), and most of the other major IMAP servers simply don't support it (courier is about the only one that has a positive comment).
How much testing have you done

painfully slow uploads
I have several mail accounts, but collect all spam e-mail in the spam
mailbox on one of them. After switching to dovecot (from imap-uw) I
notice a very slow speed of bulk transfers and a very high CPU
utilization by the dovecot's imap process during it -- sustained
62% of my server's Pentium2 @266MHz.
Never saw such effects under imap-uw... My client is KMail (despite

How to run Dovecot as IMAP Proxy?
Hi All,
I have migrated from uw-imap to Dovecot for POP3 & IMAP service. I run webmail using squirrelmail. When running uw-imap I used to run up.imapproxyd on the webmail server for faster responses. After migrating to Dovecot, I find that up.imapproxyd does not work well with dovecot.
I tried to use dovecot as IMAP PRoxy server as per the document

samba-des has bad performance
Hello!
I have a problem with samba. I run the freebsd samba-des port
(samba-des-1.9.17.4) in a pretty much vanilla setting; home dir, a few
shared dirs, no printing (yet).
The problem is performance. While Samba is not terribly slow it's still
too slow. Copying large files takes about half a minute/meg on an
Ethernet LAN with no other activity. Trying to read a file using

1.0-test24 and some mbox benchmarking
http://dovecot.org/test/
Again only mbox fixes. I found some more bugs which could have also
caused some of the mbox problems that people reported.
They were found when I today thought I'd again do a bit of testing with
my favourite 1.4GB mbox. Then I thought I might as well see how it
compares against UW-IMAP. First a bit of explanations how they work
internally:

stat() failed with mbox /var/mail/%u
Hello,
Over the last 12 hours or so, I've been wrestling with a mysterious
dovecot issue. After upgrading a mail server I'm helping my friend with
maintaining from Fedora Core1 to Fedora Core4, I realized that I
couldn't use UW-IMAP4 anymore (well, I can compile it myself, but it
turned out that UW-IMAP was the main cause of the server's having load
average as high as 30 from

I actually modified the old UW IMAP 2002 SPEC file from RHL9/FC1,
and modified a few config files, to support UW IMAP 2004b.
I made one with both RFC3501 (no text passwords over SSL) and
