Separate home and mail folders problem on delivery
Hello,
I am using dovecot 1.2rc series on my mail server combined with postfix
( virtual users with postgre ). I have setup separate home and mail
locations. It works fine ( with sieve etc. ). The user home folders are
in /home/vmail/%d/%n and mailboxes are in /srv/mail/%d/%n . The
permissions are fine and everything is working except in the following
case :
If a user does not have a home dir

user / machine / group scripts, some work some don't
Hi List,
I have some issues with user manager for domains (srvtools.exe from MS)
and the scripts mentioned in the subject. The examples from the samba
howto collection seem to cause serious issues here. I am on debian etch
and tried to create my own scripts but till now to now avail. With the
examples from the docs I could add groups, but could not add users to
groups. There was the option -A

Samba 3.0 - User Changing His/Her Passwords
Hello all!
We recently upgraded from Samba 2.2.3 to Samba 2.999+3.0.alpha20-3 on
debian 3.0. Ever since then users are unable to change their own
passwords on their W2k machine. What happens is when they try to change
it a process (passwd) gets stuck with the users name. The only way to
fix this is to kill the passwd process the user started. I haven't
changed the "passwd chat"

add|delete user / group / machine ... scripts, is the "API" somewhere documented?
Hi folks,
are there any more detailed docs about those scripts? I have some
annoying issues there and I can't find anything about that in the docs.
If using usrmgr.exe is it possible to tweak the "add user script" that
the full name of a user is stored too, like if I add the user manually
with adduser (debian) or useradd -c "Full Name" -m username on (most?)

Seeing two different user folders!!!!!
In my high school computer lab I have Red HAt 5.0 with SAMBA being
used as a file server. The kids are getting used to it. But recently
I'm seeing something strange. A student with id "james" will log on
Windows 95, go to network neighborhood and to the Linux computer and
find there among other normal items two folders. The first will be
his own folder with his id, but the second

Default permissions of /home/user..
Hello..
I've asked this question before without getting any further help really..
When a new user is added using "adduser" on 5.x (havn't really checked
if it's the same under 4.x or not), the default homedir permission is 755
(drwxr-xr-x) which to me, looks a bit insecure? It's of course pretty easy
to solve it by a simple chmod, but yet, isn't there anyway to

MUA notifications on new mail in a new folder?
If deliver gets run with a non-root userid like this:
< | deliver -m path/to/NEWmaildir >, I wonder, is a connected IMAP MUA
automatically notified, that the new message has arrived in the new folder?
As I see from some experiments with Thunderbird, it has no problems with
immediate notifications of new mail in previously existing folders, however, it
has problems with the case of new

adduser and crypt
Hello!
adduser(8) perl script uses crypt(3) to generate encrypted passwords,
as pointed in /usr/sbin/adduser itself. Currently in /etc/login.conf
password format is MD5 as default but adduser always generates encrypted
passwords in DES format.
IMHO adduser script should read value of passwd_format in /etc/login.conf
to decide what kind of salt (DES, MD5 or somewhat else) he gives to crypt.

adduser vs. useradd
Hi,
To add a user to the system on the commandline, I usually use the
adduser command.
# adduser newuser
And that's it. I've been using that command probably out of an old
habit, since I've been a long-time Slackware user before. But now I
wanted to dig a bit deeper, and some details puzzle me.
Whereas on Slackware, 'adduser' is an interactive shell script to create

Wrong rights on changing/saving MS Office files
Hi,
I know about the special way, ms office stores his files (e.g. XLS, DOC),
the client operation system is w2k not wxp with the oplock problem.
I've got here the following problem: sometimes but very often (not realy
reproducable) saving new or changed files from ms office results in 0644 or
0000 rights while the create mode and force create mode bits are set to 0664
also the force security

adduser ?
I installed CentOS 3.3 some time ago and the first thing I did after the install was
to run a little script that adds my user plus a few other things.
The script adds my user like this
USER="ulrik"
PASSWD="<mypasswd>"
/usr/sbin/adduser $USER -p $PASSWD
It seemed to work fine except I couldn't login? I searched Google for reasons why I
could only login via ssh as

adduser is contacting the AD server?
Hello,
I'm just wondering if someone stumble upon this. We are trying to create a
local account but it looks like the adduser script is contacting the AD
server for some reason and saying that the user "already exists" when it
doesn't locally.
Is there a way to disable adduser to contact AD or something similar?
Thank you.

Move of mail folders to other mail account on same server
Hi,
I'd like to move mail folders from one mail account to another mail
account on the same server. Moving the folders via my mail client
(Thunderbird) takes a long time. Therefore I wondered whether it's not
possible to simply move the files on the server itself. If I
unsubscribe to the folders in my source account, then move the folder
and subscribe to the folders in my target

how to change default shell when using adduser/useradd
Hi,
when I use useradd of adduser in CentOS 3 or 4, the default shell a user
gets /bin/bash.
I want this to be changed to /bin/false for security reasons...
How can I accomplish this?
Thanks in advance for any help.

"Add user script" option never running?
Hi all,
I'm using the latest alpha version (the one that comes with Debian
unstable) in domain mode, setting up a member file server, with domain
clients authenticating to a W2k machine.
I'm trying to use the "add user script" option to create new users
automagically, but it never seems to run. The script in this case is a
handwritten perl script, and I've added a
