Hi all, I am trying to extract from the aplay -l output the Card and Device numbers. I had a script that was working but found another motherboard that has an EXTRA word. HDA Nvidia and HDA ATI HDMI is what I am talking about below. how do I search for a line that has HDMI (which I know how to do), then ignore everything upto the device work and take the next field after that? The name of the machine in /etc/hosts is TomSlick.xyz.com TomSlick (for example). the name of the machine in /etc/sysconfig/network HOSTNAME=TomSlick.xyz.com Note both are upper case: Yet when I login as root the prompt is showing me tomslick in lower case not a combo upper lower. Hi all, when I do a "grep JERRY *.h" nothing is returned which is what I expect. This is in my source directory... when I do a "grep JERRY *" every file is returned an a line printed even though there is no JERRY on the line. I am trying to plug a USB 2 device in a USB 3 slot. Nothing is being detected in "lsusb". Is there something special I need to do? I am running centos 5.5 x86_64. I thought 3.0 was backward compatible. Nothing special about my device its an RS232 to USB device. It works in 2.0 slot. Thanks, Jerry

I am trying to automate the install of the ati driver package. Basically all I do is hit return about 6 times and take all the defaults. I tried to do this in a file that I then made executable with 744: sh ati-driver-installer-10-8-x86.x86_64.run << EOF EOF but then it starts like its doing something but never does anything. How might I automate such an install script. Again

I was just wondering if there are special tricks people do that compile A LOT on centos? Do RAM disks help or something else I dont about that minimizes your compile time? I presently have and AMD x2 4800+ with 2GIG ram. Just curious if I can reduce any more time out of my compiles. Jerry

I am trying to do an rsync or scp from machine1 to machine2. I am getting arg list to long. I am using centos 5 machine 1 and centos 4.5 on machine2. I am using the default shell which is bash. How can I get past this? THanks, Jerry
