not creating homedirs when using maildir format
Hi all, I'm in the process of setting up dovecot, but for some reason, it's not creating home directories if they don't already exist. I have the following line in dovecot.conf: default_mail_env = maildir:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u I have set permissions on /home to allow everyone full access, so creating directories in /home by dovecot non-root processes shouldn't be a

pam_mkhomedir and dovecot
Hi all, Just wondering if anyone has successfully managed to configure pam_mkhomedir and dovecot, so that users home directories are automatically created? As far as I can tell, the login process runs as a non-root user, which results in a permission denied error while trying to create the users home directory. I'm not sure if this error is specific to dovecot or pam though. Any thoughts

maildir and /var/spool/mail
All, Not sure what to do next. Have imap working in that I can see messages in inbox. When I create a folder it won't create one. Looking at maillog shows that I don't have rights to folder /var/spool/mail/.sent or whatever folder I am trying to create. I have procmailrc and dovecot.conf point to /home/Maildir but for some reason something is tied to /var/spool/mail. Of course I am

maildir and /var/spool/mail/$USER
I was told to use dovecot because it was easier than cyrus. I just upgraded from fc1 to fc3. I am not sure what fc1 used but I think it was cyrus and it worked perfect out of the box no configurations to do. The new cyrus-imapd is not so simple so I got dovecot. I see examples saying to use mbox=~/mail:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%u but when I try that I cannot map mail folders that reside

Can't change permissions for /var/spool/postfix/dovecot.index.log
For some reason i can't change the permissions on /var/spool/postfix/ dovecot.index.log from postfix to dovecot, or anything else. I changed all the files in /var/spool/postfix to be owner postfix so that postfix wouldn't complain about insufficient priviledges. I'm running MacOS X 10.4.7. I can change it all I want, but the owner and group changes do not 'stick' - they

/var/dovecot /var/spool/mail permissions, setup help (w/ config info)
(repost gmane message as list member) I need some help with Dovecot-1.0rc2 on Gentoo Linux. My test harness is one Thunderbird-1.5.0.4 client, storage using legacy mbox directories ported over from an old UW-IMAP/sendmail combo running on RHL 8. Config is intended to be passwd/pam, plaintext login allowed (until I migrate everyone to ssl). After this is working, postfix and dspam are to be

Dovecot does not access /var/mail when using Maildir
Hello, I'm running debain on my machine with postfix, squirrelmail and dovecot installed. Everything works fine and I'm able to access my mail via squirrelmail and via Outlook with imap. However I want to create subfolders what is not possible. After reading I discovered that I use mbox and that maildir is needed in order to be able to use subfolders. I have created a Maildir folder with

INBOX at /var in maildir storage format
Hi I'm trying to figure out how to set default_mail_env to support such config: INBOX is in '/var/mail/%u/' (note last slash at the end, %u is an folder with new/tmp/cur subdirs - standard maildir structure). Other imap folders are stored as files (in mbox format) in direcotry '%h/Mail/'. Please advise.

/var/spool/mail directory size and subdirectories
(Complete newbie to dovecot. I hope what follows isn't something I've missed in some FAQ somewhere...) On a traditional UNIX filesystem with UW-IMAP several years ago, we encountered major performance problems when "/var/spool/mail/" got big (we would currently be ~20,000 entries). This was due to the inefficiency of the UNIX filesystem when creating and deleting the lockfiles

Maildir folder hierarchy question
Hello all, I am trying to set up Dovecot to use a particular maildir folder hierarchy and have a problem that relates to the inbox. the folder hierarchy I want in /.../Maildir/ is: .inbox cur new tmp .imap.index.files-for-inbox .sent-items cur new tmp .imap.index.files-for-sent-items however the hierarchy that dovecot gives me is .inbox (unused) .INBOX .imap.index.files-for-.INBOX

migrating from mbox to maildir
Hi all, I have a locking problem in a Centos 4.4 linux machine with the following config: dovecot-0.99.11-8.EL4 postfix-2.2.10-1.1.el4 I use virtual mailboxes with postfix currently I have dovecot with mbox as this: default_mail_env = mbox:/var/mail/virtualmail/%d/%n The problem is that mail is being delivered to mailboxes very very slowly (sometimes up to 4 hours). In my logs, I have tons of

Newbie Q: Setting up under linux: Spool directory.
I am trying to set up dovecot under linux. (RH9 if it matters). I'm having trouble having it find the mail that is already delivered. What I would like is that mail is delivered by fetch mail to /var/spool/mail/mclay (that me) then have dovecot find it. I'm sure that I have not set the dovecot.conf file correctly. The documentation is unclear as to what "mbox" is and

no local users - mbox all under /var/spool/mail/
Hi there, im new to dovecot but I made my way trough configuring it. I almost get it running at least for one IMAP user. The problem is I got no local user thus no home directories, all Mailboxes are in mbox format under: /var/spool/mail: Looks like this: -SNIP- drwx------ 3 web1p2 poponly 19 2004-08-13 00:05 indexes -rw------- 1 nobody nobody 0 2004-03-26 21:51

Questions about differences to other mail servers
I just transferred over my first server from Suse Linux with uw-imap(ipop3/imap2003) to CentOS with Dovecot (0.99). I didn't find any problems in the testing phase, but when the actual transfer into production happened I found a few problems crop up: 1. Dovecot wants to chdir in the user's home directory even when logging in via POP3. However, the mailboxes for POP3 are all in

stat() failed with mbox /var/mail/%u
Hello, Over the last 12 hours or so, I've been wrestling with a mysterious dovecot issue. After upgrading a mail server I'm helping my friend with maintaining from Fedora Core1 to Fedora Core4, I realized that I couldn't use UW-IMAP4 anymore (well, I can compile it myself, but it turned out that UW-IMAP was the main cause of the server's having load average as high as 30 from

INBOX as mbox, other mailboxes as maildir
All, I'm trying to teach dovecot to use the mbox format for /var/mail/%u and maildir for /home/%u/Mail/ but I'm having quite a hard time. This is Dovecot v1.0.beta3 under OpenBSD 3.9 on sparc64. I've been fiddling with default_mail_env and also tried separate namespaces, but all to no avail. Here's some of the things I tried : default_mail_env =

0.99 mail env
Greetings, all Last night I migrated our mail between two machines... both running dovecot 0.99.xx. In the process, I wanted to make some small changes, namely that new mail be delivered to mboxs in /var/mail/%u and IMAP mail stored in Maildirs at ~/.imap ... I tried using: default_mail_env = maildir:~/.imap/:INBOX=mbox:/var/mail/%u But had no luck. Is it only 1.0 that can work with two

configuration problem: maildir folders and messages not found
Hi Perhaps I've been going too far OT in my previous thread or perhaps I just didn't explain my problem clear enough so forgive me for trying again. I have configured fetchmail to fetch my mail from my ISP's POP3-server. I have set up procmail to filter messages and deliver all non-filtered messages to the folder ".IN-catchall/" in "$HOME/Maildir" After sending

mbox or maildir?
I am using dovecot in an SMEServer (aka e-smith), and recently backed-up on one system and restored on another system the imap email directories. The trouble was that dovecot "guessed" the mail type wrongly, and I ended up with "empty" ~/Mail directories (did it create or populate these?), and full, but ignored ~/Maildir directories for every user. Could someone point me
