Removed Plus kernel, yum still wants to update plus kernel
I am trying to get off the plus kernel. Hasn't helped yet, and my
MadWifi does not work with it.
So I used YUMEX to remove all of the plus kernel cruft that I could see.
I rebooted. ONly the standard kernel was listed in the boot menu (good
sign).
Start up Yumex, and it is showing that the plus kernel needs updating.
Nothing on the regular kernel.
Just yum update behaves the same.

Missing fonts for tightvnc
You would think installing via yum would handle dependencies, but
perhaps fonts are not managed like dependencies.....
Anyway, I installed tightvnc to test out its IPv6 support.
Installed ok (after I erased regular vnc). But when I tried to start
it, I got 5 warnings about:
Font directory '/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc' not found - ignoring
(then the same message for Speedo, Type1,

yumex 'crashed' - anyway to resume?
I spent quite a bit of time setting up what I wanted to update and
install via yumex.
I left my system for a few minutes to attend to another computer.
A helpful family member logged me off without checking.
So can I recapture what I had queued? I cannot find anything that looks
like a yumex queue file.
yum.log does not have any updates from today....

Newer version of Gnome?
I have 2.8.0 from the base repro. I am running yumex with the Plus,
DAG, kbsingh, and jpackage repros. None of which offer a newer version
of Gnome.
I am talking about a 'deficiency' I am having with gnome, and one
responder that does not have these problems is on 2.14.2

Creating my own YUM repository
I have already 6 Centos machines here and it is getting strange
having to pull down updates to each system.
Seems like I should set up one system to pull updates and then all
other systems to point to it.
How?
Plus then I would want to add to this repository.
Say that a number of my systems use tomcat which is only available
via rpm. I would like to be able to add it to my repository, and

how to create a local update server.
could someone please point me in the right direction for creating a
local repository for centos updates.
Scenario: I have one centos server connected to the internet, it
provides ntpd, httpd, and other services to both internal and external
clients (only httpd is serving external clients).
the clients are connected to the first centos server and it functions
as a NAT router for internet

Prepping for system wipe & reload
Here's the checklist I have so far:
1 - /home partition - separate drive
2 - Files copied to the second drive:
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
rpm for RPM forge
/etc/yum - entire folder
/etc/yum/repos.d - entire folder
/etc/yum.conf
/etc/yumex.conf
/etc/yumex.profiles.conf
3 - Files installed via Yum(ex) - Hmmm, need to figure this one out. Any
pointers?

Installing CentOS via HTTP
When, after starting the install, you get a list of places for the
distribution, listing things like:
CDrom, NFS, FTP, HTTP, Local hard drive
What is expected on the HTTP url? The ISO images?
Help please, as the system I am installing on, boots off of CDrom,
but then the CDrom seems to be so old (Toshiba NW24XCD), that there
is no Linux driver for it in the base install. And I cannot

ipw3945 wireless not working
This is a new Centos 5.1 install on a HP nc2400 (that use to run XP).
Completely clean install; blew away the XP partitions...
After applying all the updates, and configuring for the rpmforge repo, I
used yumex to install dkms and the dkms-ipw3945, ipw3945-firmware, and
ipw3945d rpms.
lsmod|grep ipw shows:
ipw3945 180391 1

Groups and rpms
yum grouplist is almost ok for learning what groups are
available.Though it does not distinguish between base/manditory and
added in the installed list.
But yum list is not really helpful.
I would like to see something of what rpms are within what
group. then what rpms are not in any group. And which groups and
stand-a-lone rpms are base.
maybe it can be teased out of comp.xml...

Centos 5 -- Bind not
Well, I just did my 2nd install. (Now doing the updates via yumex and
stepping into the updates instead of risking doing it all at once.)
I selected every bind related package, and then ran the BIND
configuration GUI in System>Adminstration>Server Settings. Things seem
to work.
So I uninstalled and reinstalled on my new DNS server and it looks like
I can proceed on the install.

Yumex
In case anybody is interested, I found a version of Yumex that will
work with CentOS 4.2. It is from another RHEL clone, Scientific Linux.
This is the URL.

Create CD from avi files
I have avi files in xVid format from my Camera, and I want to create a
Video CD that can be viewed on any CD player.
I have searched through the various repos (including rpmforage and
kbsingh) and did not find anything that would burn.
I have a number of programs that have no trouble displaying these
files. Including xzine, Avidemux, and VideoLAN-Client).
I unfortunately have to make these

Problems after performing yum update
I performed the update yesterday that included installing kernel
2.6.9-42.0.2.EL and replacing ethereal with wireshark.
First, the trivial...
Wireshark would not run from the KDE menu without editing the menu to
change the command from "wireshark" to "kdesu wireshark" because dumpcap
is at usr/sbin/dumpcap instead of /usr/bin/dumpcap . Making the change
causes wireshark to
