Managing updates to non-centos packages
Hi, I'm looking for some documentation (or advice) on how to best manage a -mostly- upstream binary compatible CentOS installation. I enabled the rpmforge repository in order to install a few packages not available in base/updates/centosplus. But, now when I do a "yum check-update" yum wants to update a whole stack of packages because it's found newer versions at

OT: CentOS hosting recommendations
Hi everyone, I am looking for a dedicated server with CentOS. Any recommendations? Ideally I would like to use one of the CentOS sponsors, but I think that there are far too many to be able to compare them all by refreshing (maybe there is a page with just a list of links to sponsors but I couldn't find it). Thanks Gabriel ___________________________________________________________

Example: 2.6.18-8.1.14.el5.centos.plus I also installed these packages as described in a post I found yum install --enablerepo=centosplus xfsprogs xfsprogs-devel lsmod shows nothing about XFS I would image there are others out there

apt-cacher for CentOS
Hi All, Is there something similar to apt-cacher available for CentOS? I would like to ensure that an application is only downloaded once to the network and not hundreds of times. If there isn't an equivalent, would someone please point me in the direction of how I might accomplish this with CentOS? -- James A. core 2 duo motherboards and centos 4
from my googling around, it doesn't look there is a single motherboard that supports core 2 duo and works without patches or tweaks. is that true? the main thing we want is: core 2 duo support 4g of 800mhz (or better) ram sata gig ether with pxe boot we can live without pata or usb for a while. we've tried intel 965 and asus p5b based boards with various levels of ease of install,

Problems after performing yum update
I performed the update yesterday that included installing kernel 2.6.9-42.0.2.EL and replacing ethereal with wireshark. First, the trivial... Wireshark would not run from the KDE menu without editing the menu to change the command from "wireshark" to "kdesu wireshark" because dumpcap is at usr/sbin/dumpcap instead of /usr/bin/dumpcap . Making the change causes wireshark to

CentOS 5 on POWER
Any news on this? Will we see a POWER version of CentOS 5? -- //Morten Torstensen //Email: morten at mortent.org //IM: Cartoon at jabber.no morten.torstensen at gmail.com And if it turns out that there is a God, I don't believe that he is evil. Missing yum-priorities in 5.4?
I am looking for yum-priorities or any info on any changes here for CentOS 5.4. There is also a forum post for this here: <https://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=22798&forum=37> Is this missing on purpose? Function merged with another yum package? Or is it just missing as an oversight? -- //Morten //morten at mortent.org

Logwatch for postfix
On CentOS5 with the latest updates applied, the logwatch filter for postfix returns way too many lines from the log. I get an "unmatched entries" message and all messages that have gone through the system is listed. Here is an example: 8F930A8092: to=<morten at foo.bar>, orig_to=<morten at localhost>, relay=local, delay=0.19, delays=0.06/0.01/0/0.12, dsn=2.0.0,

Does anyone use tcp wrappers (hosts.allow/hosts.deny) anymore?
Does anyone use tcp wrappers (hosts.allow/hosts.deny) anymore? And, would you care strongly if it went away (or would you just migrate to something else)? I bring this up because we are discussing dropping it from Fedora. This would be far enough in the future that it wouldn't impact RHEL 7, and therefore won't affect anyone here for Quite Some Time*, but here in the new world order of

Samba and file locking
Are their issues with Samba and Lustre working together? I remember something about turning oplocks off in samba, and while testing samba I noticed this [2010/08/27 17:30:59, 3] lib/util.c:fcntl_getlock(2064) fcntl_getlock: lock request failed at offset 75694080 count 65536 type 1 (Function not implemented) But I also found out about the flock option for lustre. New rpms for lockdir problem
I just built new puppet rpm''s for Fedora (puppet-0.22.1-2) that fix the lockdir problem that many of you have encountered. The packages should show up on a mirror near you very soon. Unfortunately, I am having trouble getting to my buildsystem that I use for the RHEL versions of the RPM; I made the source rpm available on my people page[1] If you need the RPM for RHEL, you need to

why does automounting removable media always have options nodev, noexec, nosuid?
i'm experimenting with some basic removable media mounting exercises for an upcoming class, and i read that, while you can use gconf-editor to change some of the mount options in cases like that, there is no way to override the mount options of nodev, noexec and nosuid. for example, that claim is made here (admittedly for fedora, but it appears to be true for centos as well):
