Need help tracking the spread of a BIOS bug
Help everyone... I need to track the spread of a BIOS bug. One symptom
of this particular BIOS bug is that with pxelinux.0 from Syslinux
3.83-pre9, "localboot 0" works, but *if pxelinux.0 chainloads itself
first*, then "localboot 0" *does not work*.
I have reasons to believe this is a fairly widespread bug among newer
hardware (made in the last two years or so), and it is

Identify motherboard from SSH login
Hi,
I have CentOS 4.4 installed on a system at an ISP and I am trying to setup
lm_sensors. It would be a lot easier to setup if I knew what motherboard I was
using! :-)
Is there any way of identifying the motherboard of a system remotely (via SSH)?
Many thanks
Regards, Dan

Syslinux using Asset Tag (from Dell or Compay) instead of MAC Adress
I am using PXELINUX to unattened install our machines with XP.
It is a not very easy to handle with mac adresses because mac
adresses can change when a motherboard is changed, but the asset tag
from dell (or also from compaq) will be also updated when the motherboard is
changed to the
original value, so our unique key here is the asset tag.
So my idea is to change the behaviour so that it will

Gathering information about RAM in sockets
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Hi list,
I have an IBM xseries 345, running CentOS 5.3, hosting a few Xen domUs.
However, I need more RAM -- but cannot remember if all (four) RAM
sockets are populated (which would mean to buy higher capacity modules)
or if there are two slots left to use.
However, I'd like (and think that it's possible, but don't remember how)

OT: BIOS upgrades and booting without a floppy drive
I've got a machine running CentOS 3.5 with an Intel D865GBF
motherboard and I've been having an occasional "event" where
disk-intensive activity (such as running "yum check-update" or
starting up OpenOffice) causes the load average to spike and X11 to
become unresponsive (as in, the pointer won't even track the mouse)
for a few seconds. The machine always recovers

Ugh on new bios.
Just so others know. On my EVGA motherboard the option to boot
removable media didn't work on my usb flash drive with syslinux on it.
Yesterday I tried updating the version of syslinux and seeing if that
would wok. Frustrated with it not working I moaned and groaned and my
brother decided to look for options in the bios that I might have
missed. He couldn't find anything. But I decided to

:: BIOS Motherboard Settings ::
I am using an ASUS P4P800 Deluxe which is a motherboard that has been tested
with Asterisk. I am unsure about the PCI slot and IRQ settings in the BIOS
and am having problems with a WCFXO card sharing with other devices. Any
suggestions on the settings required for Asterisk to avoid IRQ conflicts?
Thanks :)

dmidecode doesn't work under xen 4.1.1 on certain hardware
I have a xen 4.1.1 with a 3.0.4 linux kernel running on a Supermicro
Supermicro X8DTL-iF motherboard with 16GB of RAM.
If I run the 3.0.4 kernel on the bare metal dmidecode works fine. If I
run it under xen dmidecode fails to work. On other systems with
different hardware but identical software dmidecode works correctly
under xen. On this hardware with xen 3.4.1 & linux 2.6.18, dmidecode

IIRC the old dmraid support for motherboard RAID has been phased out,
but mdraid has grown support for Intel (and maybe some other?) common

SYSLINUX used by Intel for BIOS updates
All,
I went to download a BIOS update for my motherboard today and had
the option for an ISO. Upon booting said ISO, I was greeted with:
ISOLINUX 2.10 2004-06-18 Copyright (C) 1994-2004 H. Peter Anvin
along with the other appropriate BIOS update instructions.
Congratulations for all of the hard work everyone has put into the
SYSLINUX product. I've used it for several years now and it

OT: dmidecode data - what is maximum RAM capacity of this box?
In Timo's thread about RAM today, I noticed dmidecode and I got the
data for my Dell Dimension 2400 (Celeron CPU) box, which is below. I
won this box in a raffle, during February 2005. After I got the box, I
got conflicting information, from Crucial.com and from Dell Latin
America, regarding the maximum RAM configuration. To be conservative,
I bought two 256 MB DIMMS from Crucial.com, early

Moterboard help Please
All,
I have been terribly pleased with openbsd 3.2 I was using it as a
mail/samba server with postifx on a pentium pro 200 with 1 gig of
memory. Well I wanted to add a larger harddrive than what I have in it
now only 6.4 gig. Well the machine would not see it and for some reason
after hours and hours of trying I can't get a tekram 395UW and a 18gig
scsi to be the boot drive and having failed

Gigabyte motherboards and Syslinux
I read the mailing list archive about Gigabyte motherboards not working
with USB booting ("[syslinux] Gigabyte recent bios & syslinux extlinux
trow USB-IDE bridges or pendrives", 16 Aug 2006).
I have a Gigabyte GA-MA790GP-DS4H motherboard that I tried to boot in
USB-HDD mode with a PNY boot pen. I installed System Rescue CD on it.
It would appear that Gigabyte still doesn't

Kernel panic kickstarting to CentOS 4
I have an older server I am trying to update to CentOS 4.3 but I can't
get to the installer screen because the machine kernel panics when
booted from the install CD. The error message I get is:
