Maildir folder hierarchy question
Hello all,
I am trying to set up Dovecot to use a particular
maildir folder hierarchy and have a problem that
relates to the inbox.
the folder hierarchy I want in /.../Maildir/ is:
.inbox
cur
new
tmp
.imap.index.files-for-inbox
.sent-items
cur
new
tmp
.imap.index.files-for-sent-items
however the hierarchy that dovecot gives me is
.inbox (unused)
.INBOX
.imap.index.files-for-.INBOX

INBOX as mbox, other mailboxes as maildir
All,
I'm trying to teach dovecot to use the mbox format for /var/mail/%u
and maildir for /home/%u/Mail/ but I'm having quite a hard time. This
is Dovecot v1.0.beta3 under OpenBSD 3.9 on sparc64.
I've been fiddling with default_mail_env and also tried separate
namespaces, but all to no avail. Here's some of the things I tried :

RC7: its issues or mine?
Background: I'm new to dovecot (although with many years Washington IMAP
behind me). We're considering migrating from Washington IMAP to dovecot
on the main service here, and have just started trying dovecot, using RC7.
Washington, IMAP has the usual(-ish) "/var/spool/mail" shared area for the
INBOX (trad. UNIX "From " format); a user's folders default to being

Multiple authentication databases and storage locations
Hello Everyone,
I am playing with the $subject matter using 1.0alpha4, and thanks to the
archives, I lifted this one from Alexander Shikoff off and used it in my
setup.
auth default {
mechanisms = plain
user = root
passdb pam {
args = pop3
}
passdb sql {
args = /usr/local/dovecot/etc/dovecot-mysql.conf

mbox and pop3, maildir and imap
Hi,
Been reading a lot of posts about dovecot configuration, but can't really
figure out if what I want is even possible or how to achieve this.
My setup is simple :
One linux machine that collects mail from my provider and sorts them for
me and my wife, where my email is stored in Maildir format in
~myuser/.maildir
and my wife's email is stored in mbox format in

Maildir/mbox on a per-user basis
Hello,
The Wiki indicates that Dovecot can do either mbox or Maildir on a
per-user basis:
default_mail_env can be overridden in userdb for each user. This works
with userdbs supporting the "mail" attribute (eg. passwd-file, SQL,
LDAP).
How exactly does one do this for passwd-file?
Thanks,

dovecot - outlook users keep getting locked out of imap
Greetings:
My outlook users accessing mail via dovecot's imaps have been consistantly
getting locked out of their email. It happens about once a week per
outlook user. It appears to happen when the are cliking on emails with
attachments. When this happens, there are two imap deamons running for
that user. I kill both deamons and things start working again.

Locking strategy?
Hello!
I run the following environment:
UW imapd
pine
sendmail
procmail
mbox format
I migrated from UW imapd to dovecot. It is pretty faster than UW imapd.
To ensure a compatible environment I did the following configuration
changes in /etc/dovecot.conf:
protocols = imaps
default_mail_env = mbox:~:INBOX=/var/mail/%u
mail_full_filesystem_access = yes
mbox_read_locks = fcntl
mbox_write_locks

dovecot rpms, .subscriptions file, mbox to maildir
Hi,
I am running dovecot 0.99-14 on a Fedora Core 2 machine. I had a few
questions:
1) I wanted to upgrade to the dovecot-1.0 release. However, I am not
sure if that's really required. dovecot-0.99-14 has been running very
well for me for quite some time. Is there a real advantage to switching
to the latest release. The reason I'm asking this is because:
i) I don't have too

Today I upgraded to dovecot 1.0 rc1 (before I was using a 1.0 beta, as
it had functions no one else had), the beta worked fairly well, no
crashes, and the bugs were few and far between. I had a few issues with
thunderbird 1.5, so I decided to upgrade.
My problem is this, before, I had configured procmail to deliver SPAM
to a subdirectory of the users home directory, (not mail/) and

Cannot see contents of ~/mail folder
Hi,
I just installed dovecot-0.99 on my Fedora Core 2 machine. When I start
the secure IMAP daemon, I am able to see my Inbox, but not the other
folders in the 'mail' folder in my home directory (sent-mail,
saved-messages, etc.) These folders were created when I was using pine
earlier on the machine. In my dovecot.conf file, I have set:

possible bug with incoming mail
I've been using Dovecot for a couple months now and am very impressed.
Thanks for a great package.
However, I have noticed a problem that I haven't been able to solve.
When a new message comes into my inbox, the last message that was
received is marked as new as well as the new one.
I originally thought this was a bug in my client (mutt) but I have
verified that the same thing

alpine + Maildir
Hello,
I am trying to configure pine.conf for all users and running into an
issue. In this setup, Mailbox format is Maildir and Maildir location
is /Mail/Username/{new,cur,..etc}
First thing required in alpine was patch for maildir and this has
already been done. After that I have tried setting up
folder-collection Mail #md ../../Mail/username and also tried using

INBOX as Maildir and folders as mbox
Hi,
I was wondering whether anybody has managed to get Dovecot 1.0 to store
INBOX as Maildir and folders as mbox.
I've tried something like
default_mail_env =
mbox:/folders/user/mail:INBOX=maildir:/inboxes/maildir/user:INDEX=/indexes/user
but it doesn't seem to work (treats INBOX as mbox).
I'm hoping to move some INBOXes from mbox on local disk to Maildir on
nicely-mirrored NetApp

Migrating from mbox to maildir: Message ordering?
Hi, all.
I have been playing with the notion of migrating some of my folders to
maildir because it's a lot easier to manage that way from a reader
standpoint. The big question I have is how do I maintain message
ordering in each folder?
When I use a mail program to do the migration from mbox to maildir,
selecting "order received ascending", it works nicely, but one very

Dovecot create mbox files. But why?
Hi there,
my dovecot is now running normaly, but there is a small problem....
We want to to use the maildir format at the mailstorage. But the imap
part of dovecot creates the for mbox specific files, but why?
I created a passwd-file for a testuser. At this tme, there is only on line:
test2 at dev2.abc.de:ujAN28k8.5zV2:99:99:*:*:*:*
in dovecot.conf are these interesting lines:

maildir and /var/spool/mail/$USER
I was told to use dovecot because it was easier than cyrus. I just
upgraded from fc1 to fc3. I am not sure what fc1 used but I think it was
cyrus and it worked perfect out of the box no configurations to do. The
new cyrus-imapd is not so simple so I got dovecot. I see examples saying
to use mbox=~/mail:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%u but when I try that I
cannot map mail folders that reside
