General CentOS 5.1 (or Gnome) instability?
I've been a big fan of CentOS for a while, and didn't have many
issues with CentOS 4.X over the past few years. However, since
moving to CentOS 5.1 a few weeks ago, I have received more problem
reports from my users than in the last year and a half on CentOS
4.X. I've previously reported the problem with gnome-terminal
crashing (and since there is a single gnome-terminal

Frequent Gnome Terminal crashes in CentOS 5.1
Ever since I upgraded all my systems to CentOS 5.1 I have been
getting reports from users about "all their windows disappearing". A
little digging revealed that they meant all gnome-terminal windows.
Since there is only one gnome-terminal process by default for all
your open terminal windows and tabs, a crash of that process means
losing all your terminal windows. These

weird characters in files created by gnome login on samba share
Hello,
I just tried a gnome login with an empty home directory on a samba
mounted directory, and this resulted in several files with strange
characters in the filenames in the end. (as created by the initial gnome
login)
I cannot reproduce this by hand, and it certainly does not happen when I
do the login on a local directory, or when I copy that local directory
to the samba directory.
I use

umask and nautilus/gnome
Hi,
Does anyone know how to set umask such that nautilus actually obeys it? I
have umask 002 added to the end of .bashrc, and if I touch a file from a
gnome terminal, I correctly get -rw-rw-r--. However if I right click in a
nautilus window and "create document" then "empty file" I end up with
-rw------ which is obviously going to be a royal pita for group working!

Duplicate *.desktop entries for GNOME in /usr/share/applications
Hi,
Today I noticed something strange. There seem to be a series of
duplicate desktop menu entries in /usr/share/applications.
Example: gedit.desktop and org.gnome.gedit.desktop
Other example: nautilus.desktop and org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop
This is annoying, since I usually edit some custom menu entries for my
users. Now, if I edit both files for a single application, I end up with

I've lost control of Gnome
I tried out KDE for a while, but eventually found that it was not to
my liking. I've switched back to Gnome, but it seems to me that options
I used to have in the panel aren't available anymore. I'm not totally
sure, but isn't there supposed to be some sort of Gnome (Nautilus?)
control center? A place where I can adjust the themes, screen savers,
and that sort of thing?

Is Gnome in CentOS 5 ready for nfsv4?
Hello,
all my data are hosted by a server and exported with nfsv4. For example
if a user logs in on a client, /home and /data are exported with nfsv4
and autofs. Now if the user delete some files, the trashcan under
gnome doesn't change its status nor doesn't show the deleted files if
opening the trashcan window.
Also the user isn't able to copy or move files between the exported

Difference in gnome between centos <> fedora
Hello,
I've on my home PC CentOS 6 and Fedora 13 on different disks. When I log
on the gnome enviroment at Fedora knows exactly which programm was started
at which desktop (for example: thunderbird on desktop 1, firefox on
desktop 2, nautilus on desktop 3, ..). The same procedure on Centos takes
all programs on the first desktop, so I must arrange the programs on the
right desktop.

Gnome Bluetooth Manager
I installed: gnome-bluetooth.i386 0.7.0-10.2.el5 from the base repo
It also installed (at least): gnome-bluetooth-libs.i386 0.7.0-10.2.el5
These show up in /var/log/yum.log
interestingly they do not show up in /var/log/rpmpkgs
My bluetooth mouse is now working. It was not before.
But I do not see any bluetooth management stuff in gnome

Previewing oggvorbis files in GNOME...
Hi. I'm wondering if anyone out there can give me a little help trying
to figure something out: I presently am running CentOS4.1 with GNOME as
my desktop (It runs quite well, I must say!). I just have a little
curiosity: I have a few audio files (.wav, .mp3 and .ogg) and I like to
"preview" them. When run my mouse over the .wav files (and mp3 files)

Installing a gnome-desktop on CENTOS-6.3 following minimal system install.
I am still trying without much success to get a desktop on my minimal

I get a desktop but other than the icons for computer, home and trash
there is nothing displayed. I can right click the mouse and from
there I can open a terminal window and creat a folder on the desktop
but I have no title bar and no status bar. There are

Locales and filenames
I have a file which contains non-ASCII characters (umlauts, accented
characters, etc.) both in its filename as well as its content. The
only way I have been able to see these characters is inside vim,
where they are displayed correctly no matter what I have LANG set
to. My default LANG is en_US.utf8, but I have tried de_DE.utf8,
de_DE.iso88591, and various others. In the output of a
