Clean up a scatterplot with too much data
I'm working with a lot of data right now, but I'm new to R, and not very good
with it, hence my request for help. What type of graph could I use to
straighten out things like...

I want to see general frequencies. Should I use something like a 3D
histogram, or is there an easier way like, say, shading? I'm sure these

Function won't permanently assign values to a vector
I'm somewhat new to R, but I've had a lot of experience in Java.
I'm working on a function that takes data from a data frame, does some math
and assigns the values to a vector. Pretty simple. I plan to merge the
vector with the data frame when I'm done.
The vector is called offense1 (there will eventually be 2). I declared it on
its own, outside of the function. Right now its

Basic vector logic not working
I am interning in a computer science lab and I'm very new to R. The language
basics are clear, but this particular problem isn't:
I have a very large dataframe called "data" which holds data from Halo
matches. I'm trying to analyze a certain window such that data$deaths>20 and
data$deaths<=27.
When I enter the line
kills = data$kills[data$deaths>20]

SQL INSERT using RMySQL
Hi All,
I've finally gotten around to database access using R. I'm happily
extracting rows from a MySQL database using RMySQL, but am having
problems appending rows to an existing table.
What I *want* to do is to append rows to the table, allowing the
database to automatically generate primary key values. I've only
managed to add rows by using

Merging two dataframes
Hi All,
Newbie question for you all but i have been looking at the archieves and the
help dtuff to get a rough idea of what i want to do
I would like to merge two dataframes together based on a keyed variable in
one dataframe linking to the other dataframe. Only some of the cases will
match but i would like to keep the others as well.
My dataframes have 67 and 28 cases respectively and i would

Trouble with line of best fit
I don't usually do much with graphs in R, and this is my first time adding a
line of best fit. Hopefully this is an easy problem to solve.
I'm looking at a variable called soloKills along the range 5:28. Here are
all my commands, in script form:
range=5:28
graph=soloKills
title="Solo kill/death data"
xlabel="Number of deaths/1 game"
ylabel="Mean number of kills/1

"Negative length vector" error in simple merge
Hi,
I'm trying to take a vector (length almost 2,000,000) and merge it with a
data frame of the same length. I'm trying to do it solely based on index,
and not any other factors.
The vector is called "offense", and the data frame is just called "data". I
went with the simplest option:
merge(data,offense)
but it always gives me the same error:

Coxph frailty model counting process error X matrix deemed singular
Hello,
I am currently trying to simulate data and analyze it using the frailty option in the coxph function. I am working with recurrent event data, using counting process notation. Occasionally, (about 1 in every 100 simulations) I get the following warning:
Error in coxph(Surv(start, end, censorind) ~ binary + uniform + frailty(subject, :

Viewing object associated via "has_many :through"?
This is my first question to the Forum. Ive set up these associations:

has_many :track_ones, :through => :playlists_tracks, :source => :track
has_many :track_twos, :through => :playlists_tracks, :source => :track

enable fulldata journaling
Hi,
well I've deployed ext3 on two machines already and so far it does its
job excellently at no (for me) noticable performance loss. I hope it
gets incorporated into stock kernels by Linus soon.
Anyways I've been hearing about ext3 supporting full-data journalling
on a per-file basis but couldn't find any detailed info about it. Even
tried grep'ing throught the source. How

help with calculation from dataframe with multiple entries per sample
Hi
I have a dataframe similar to:
>Sample<-c(1,1,1,2,2,2,3,3,3)
>Time<-c(1,2,3,1,2,3,1,2,3)
>Mass<-c(3,3.1,3.4,4,4.3,4.4,3,3.2,3.5)
>mydata<-as.data.frame(cbind(Sample,Time,Mass))
Sample Time Mass

Small changes to big objects (1)
Martin Morgan commented in email to me that a change to any slot of an
object that has other, large slot(s) does substantial computation,
presumably from copying the whole object. Is there anything to be done?
There are in fact two possible changes, one automatic but only partial,
the other requiring some action on the programmer's part. Herewith the
first; I'll discuss the second

Gompertz-Makeham hazard models---test for significant difference
Hi, all.
I'm working with published paleodemographic data (counts of skeletons that
have been assigned into an age-range category, based upon observed
morphological characteristics). For example, the following is the age
distribution from a prehistoric cemetery in Egypt:

sequential treatment of a vector for formula
Please pardon the simplicity of this question of biological nature.
I'm trying to calculate a statistic, px, the proportion of a cohort
that survives through the interval x:x+1. I have the vector from
which the calc is to be made but I can't figure out how to tell R to
take the current value and divide it by the next value.
The formula is P0=L1/LO

Different deviance residuals in a (similar?!?) glm example
Dear R-users,
I would like to show you a simple example that gives an overview of one
of my current issue.
Although my working setting implies a different parametric model (which
cannot be framed in the glm), I guess that what I'll get from the
following example it would help for the next steps.
Anyway here it is.
Firstly I simulated from a series of exposures, a series of deaths

Barplot errors in MASS script
Reading "Modern Applied Statististics with S" and trying the corresponding
examples both in the book and in ../lib/R/library/MASS/script, I'm now trying
chapter 4 plotting bars with the following code on a linux box with R 1.8.1:

Levels attribute in integer columns created by model.frame()
The following is evidence of what is surely an undesirable feature.
The issue is the handling, in calls to model.frame(), of an
explanatory variable that has been derived as an unclassed
factor. (Ross Darnell drew this to my attention.)
## Data are slightly modified from p.191 of MASS

formatting dates in axis labels (ggplot2)
I'm having trouble figuring out how to format Date variables when used
as axis labels in graphs.
The particular case here is an attempt to re-create Nightingale's
coxcomb graph with ggplot2,
where I'd like the months to be labeled as "Mar 1885", "Apr 1885", using
a date format
of "%b %Y" applied to label the dates, or really anything other than
