R-crash using read.shape (maptools)
Hi List, I am trying to read a large shapefile (~37,000 polys) using read.shape [winxp, 1gig ram, dellbox). I receive the following error: AppName: rgui.exe AppVer: 1.90.30412.0 ModName: maptools.dll ModVer: 1.90.30412.0 Offset: 0000309d The getinfo.shape returns info, and the shapefile is readable in arcmap. Any ideas on how to overcome this? Thanks Herry

Using GIS data in R
I have a simple problem: I need to load a ERSI shapefile of US states and check whether or not a set of points are within the boundary of these states. I have the shapefile, I have the coordinates but I'm having a great deal of difficulty bringing the two together. The problem is the various GIS packages for R do not play well with each other. sp, shapefiles, maptools, etc all use different

[R-sig-Geo] How to extract coordinates values from a shapefile?
I'm not sure if this is what you want. But the function coordinates() in sp package gives you the coordinates of SpatialObjects. Regards. maptools package
A few years back, I wrote some code to plot maps with the maptools package. Now I am trying to reproduce my results, only to find out that maptools has been updated and my code no longer works. I've been able to fix the first part of it by forcing spb <- maptools:::read.shape("/home/sasha/Documents/maps/spb.shp") (as read.shape has been deprecated) but now when I do plot(spb,

maptools, write.polylistShape
Dear Roger, I am trying to use the write.polylistShape() function of maptools for the first time and realize that it handles list of polygons of class 'polylist'. However, it seems that no as.polylist() function exist in the package. The question behind that is: in your opinion, which would be the best way to convert a list of matrix of polygon nodes coordinates into an object of

In R's maptools package, is there a built-in function to test if a given point is "inside" a given polygon on the map? The map was loaded from an ESRI Shapefile. The point's latitude and longitude are known. Thank you! Aleks -- ------------------------ Aleksandr Andreev Fulbright Fellow Graduate School of Management St Petersburg State University
