Applying a function to a column of a data frame
Apologees the novice question. Currently climbing up the learning curve of R. Suppose I have the following function and the data.frame: testfun<-function(x=1,y=2) x+y testframe=data.frame(col1=c(1,2),col2=c(3,4)) When evaluating testfun, I want to use the default value for y (which is 2) and for x, I want to feed (one by one) the values in col2 of testframe. How can I achieve this please?

strange error with rw2010dev
With rw2010dev I get a strange protect(): protection stack overflow error with a small data frame which otherwise is usable: If anybody wants to have a look I can provide an RData file with the problematic data frame. Doesn't seem to be necessary, the following simulated example generates the error: > testmat <- matrix(1:80, 20,4) > dim(testmat) [1] 20 4 > str(testmat) int

nls() fit to a lorentzian - can I specify partials?
First, thanks to all who helped me with my question about rescaling axes on the fly. Using unlist() and range() to set the axis ranges in advance worked well. I've since plotted about 300 datasets with relative ease. Now I'm trying to fit a lossy oscillator resonance to (the square root of) a lorentzian (testframe$y is oscillator amplitude, testframe$x is drive frequency): lorentz

Data.frames can not hold objects...What can be done in the following scenario?
R-Help community, I understand that data.frames can hold elements of type double, string etc but NOT objects (such as a matrix etc). This is not convenient for me in the following situation. I have a function that takes 2 inputs and returns a vector: testfun <- function (x,y) seq(x,y,1) I have a data.frame defined as follows: testframe<-data.frame(xvalues=c(2,3),yvalues=c(4,5)) I would

instabilities in wxRuby 1.9.6
I have recently started to use wxRuby, because I have used the wxWidgets library from C++ for a few years and found it an excellent toolkit. I am using Ubuntu 8.04 and version 1.9.6 of wxRuby. A problem though is a number of instabilities. This may be due to my own ignorance, but I have usually found C++/wxWidgets, once the program compiles it will at least stay working, if at times

s3 methods on S4 objects
I have J Chambers wonderful text ( Software for data Analysis) and I've been trying my hand at some very routine S4 OOP development. One of the things I was trying to do was to create some very basic S4 classes. The first was simply a class that had a data.frame as part of its representation. setClass("df",representation(dirframe="data.frame")) The object basically

Time intervals in a datframe
Hi all I have a list of multiple datframes with the same column headers. The last column in each datframe contains a vector of "Interval" class after I have produced this column using "lubridate" package. I needed to convert my list of dataframes to be in a single dataframe for further analysis. I did this using the following syntax : SingleDataframe <- ldply

"Large" data set: performance issue
hi all, I've got to import CSV-datasets (with variable-names in the first line) into data.frames. each is about 12MB (or more!) with 1823 columns and about 500 rows. the first 22 columns are in "character"-mode, the rest is "numeric". I run R 1.4.1 on a Windows 2000 system. First I tried read.table() which works fine for a low number of cases (say, 40). with all cases

SWIG Bug
In trying to add wxTextCtrl to wxruby-swig, I''ve been running into a problem with the argument conversion that appears to be a SWIG director bug. It is tied to multiple inheritance, and is related to SWIG specifically making director''s ''initialize'' take a first argument, but because ''initialize'' is static there isn''t a self value

wxGrid Question
When operating with a wxGrid is there a way to get a reference to the TextCtrl field that is created when you start typing in a cell. Also is there a way to get mouse events to work with a wxGrid, so far I can''t get any of them to work. I had tried various combo''s of: @grid.evt_left_down(){ |event| puts "Left mouse is down"; } using evt_left_down, evt_left_up,

Running code after a modal dialog is shown
Hi all, I''m looking for a way to get a block of code to execute once a modal dialog has been displayed (via a call to show_modal.) I was hoping to find some event that would fire when the window was shown, but the only one that seemed vaguely promising (evt_window_create) seems to do nothing at all, at least in my environment (Ruby 1.9.1 on Win32, wxruby 2.0.1.) Here''s a

tapply and NA value
Hi, I'm writing for a little help. I have a dataframe with same NA value and I'd like to obtain the means of the value of a coloumn grouped by the levels of a factor coloumn of the datframe. I'm using the function "tapply" but I see that if only a NA value is present the result is NA. There is an option to have the correct result or I must use an other function? Thanks of

Pls package
Hi, I have managed to format my data into a single datframe consisting of two AsIs response and predictor dataframes in order to supply the plsr command of the pls package for principal components analysis. When I execute the command, however, I get this error: > fiber1 <- plsr(respmat ~ predmat, ncomp=1, data=inputmat, validation="LOO") Error in model.frame.default(formula =

Creating a vector based on lookup function
I am still searching for a solution to what i think is a simple problem i am having with building a vector in a for loop. I have built a more understandable example so hopefully that will help..help you, help me, if you know what i mean. dev=400 #test location model TAZs to reference cands=c(101,105,109) #Create Object of length of cands candslength=length(cands) #TEST TAZ Vector

aggregate function with 'NA'
Dear r-help reader, I have some problems with the aggregate function. My datframe looks like >frame Day Time V1 V2 1 M 0 3 NA 2 M 0 4 NA 3 M 0 5 2 4 M 1 NA 4 5 M 1 10 6 6 T 0 4 45 7 T 1 4 3 8 T 1 3 2 9 T 1 6 1 I used the aggegate function to obtain the mean in V1 and V2 over the grouping variable Time and Day

using apply
Hi I have 3 dataframes, a,b,c with 0/1 values...i have to check a condition for dataframe a and b and then input the rows ids to datframe c . In the if condition, I AND the 2 rows of from a and b and then see if the result is equal to one of them. I have done this using a for loop, however, it takes a long time to execute with larger dataset..Can you help me do it using apply function so that i
