Fitting spline using Pspline
Hey all,
I seem to be having trouble fitting a spline to a large set of data using
PSpline. It seems to work fine for a data set of size n=4476, but not for
anything larger (say, n=4477). For example:
THIS WORKS:
-----------------------------
random = array(0,c(4476,2))
random[,1] = runif(4476,0,1)
random[,2] = runif(4476,0,1)
random = random[order(random[,1]),]
plot(random[,1],random[,2])

Where's MVA?
Hi All:
Package TSERIES is stated to depend on MVA. However, there is no MVA package to be found under the list of package sources.

Help with Projection Pursuit, ppr().
Hi,
Recently, I installed the 1.1.0 version of R (for Windows), since it includes an implementation of Projection Pursuit (I failed to write my own version of PP as a standalone C++ program).
As far as I know, R offers two interfaces/sintax for the ppr() function. The first one requieres a regression formula and a data frame. The other requieres X, a matrix with the explanatory variables, and Y,

Trouble building package using R in development
Dear List,
I'm having considerable trouble setting up my environment (Linux, Fedora
16, Bash) to build and check packages under R Under Development
(r61660). I'm doing this to better get a handle on difference in the
output from running checks on examples in one of my packages. Note I
compiled R Under Development myself
The problem I am now having is whenever I try to build my analogue

Any quiet 24 port POE switches out there?
I have an upcoming install which places the switch close to some
employees in a quiet work environment. Can anyone recommend a quiet 24
port POE switch? The Linksys SRW224P behind me right now would be
objectionable, I'm sure.

Which non-parametric regression would allow fitting this type of data? (example given).
Hi,
I'm wondering which function would allow fitting this type of data:
tmp=rnorm(2000)
X.1 = 5+tmp
Y.1 = 5+ (5*tmp+rnorm(2000))
tmp=rnorm(100)
X.2 = 9+tmp
Y.2 = 40+ (1.5*tmp+rnorm(100))
X.3 = 7+ 0.5*runif(500)
Y.3 = 15+20*runif(500)
X = c(X.1,X.2,X.3)
Y = c(Y.1,Y.2,Y.3)
plot(X,Y)

It's ODRPACK at http://www.netlib.org/, not ORDPACK.

Multidimensional scaling
A student of mine wants to use R to do some nonmetric multidimensional
scaling. According to the R FAQ, there's a package called pcurve that
computes multidimensional scaling solutions, but I was not able to locate
it the contrib page (I am a Windows user with R version 1.4.1). Can
anyone tell me whether it is possible to do nonmetric multidimensional
scaling with R, and if so, how?

rebuilding vignettes in 2.13-0-alpha fails if name of source dir is not package name
Dear list,
I have been checking my package ('analogue') using R2.13-0-alpha
(details of exact svn version appended below) and the R CMD check
procedure is generating an error rebuilding a vignette in the package,
which raises a NOTE in the check.
The log printed to screen during check shows:

Add text A, B, C and D on multiple ordered plot
Dear list,
Is there a elegant way to name multiple ordered plot as A, B, C and D?
Just put A, B, C and D on the top left corner of each plot.
Usually I do it in Illustrator, but I think in R should there is a way.
Could you please provide a example?
Thank you very much in advance.

When trying to use Hmisc library's aregImpute function on R 1.7.0, I

x2 <- (x1=='b') + 3*(x1=='c') + rnorm(1000,0,2)

Problem in loading all packages all at once
Hi All
Please see the Rprofile file which i have modified as follows and after
that when I start R then I see that R says to me "TRUE" for all the
packages implying that all loaded at once.
But when i try to use commands as simple as help("lm"), it doesnt work nor
any of the menu "Packages" is not working.
Although the regression using lm ( Y ~ X ) is working

e1071 SVM, cross-validation and overfitting
I am accustomed to the LIBSVM package, which provides cross-validation
on training with the -v option
% svm-train -v 5 ...
This does 5 fold cross validation while building the model and avoids
over-fitting.
But I don't see how to accomplish that in the e1071 package. (I
learned that svm(... cross=5 ...) only _tests_ using cross-validation
-- it doesn't affect the training.) Can

"Out of memory" install error message
Hi folks,
I've been trying to install a legacy 16-bit Windows app called
Expensable, published about 7 years ago by Intuit. Over the years I've
run it natively, under Win-OS/2, and under Wine with a native Windows
partition. Never a problem.
Now that I've removed the Windows partition from my Linux box, I've set
up Wine to work with fake Windows. The installation is fine, and
