Write performance with 3ware 9550
I have two identical servers. The only difference is that the first
one has Maxtor 250G drives and the second one has Seagate 320G drives.
OS: CentOS-4.4 (fully patched)
CPU: dual Opteron 280
Memory: 16GB
Raid card: 3ware 9550Sx-8LP
Raid volume: 4-disk Raid 5 with NCQ and Write Cache enabled
On the first server I have decent performance. Nothing spectacular,
but good enough. The second one

Any long-time CentOS users on list using Ubuntu as well?
I've gotten roped into helping a local charity with some
computing/infrastructure snafus. It seems their last good Samaritan
installed Ubuntu all over the place and is "unavailable" now to clean up
the mess. CentOS has made me somewhat lazy because everything just
works out of the box for the most part and you've got the occasional
"yum update". :) These are

32-bit vs 64-bit CentOS on 64-bit hardware
I was asked this question today and frankly, I didn't know the answer.
So I thought I'd post it here....
If you don't need to access greater than 4GB RAM, is there any benefit
to running the 64-bit version of CentOS vs the 32-bit one? That's
assuming, of course, that the target machine utilizes a 64-bit capable
processor. I hadn't seen any noticeable difference, but I

Home Theater Thing
I checked Best Buy again. The second system I recommended is in stock
at the Best Buy in Warwick. It's on sale for $353. :)

I'm thinking about getting out of Dodge today to unwind so if you pick
it up early today I can come up and help you install it and then just
come home later in the day.

Centos 4.4 Install bug
To the Centos maintainers:
We tried to install Centos 4.4 i386 (i686 / Athlon)
on a Dual Opteron 254 Iwill DK8N MB, 1GB (4 x 256M)
system with a 3ware 9500S-4 and 4 x 80 GB disks
in a RAID 10 array.
Both tries caused Centos to first kernel panic
until we turned off IO-APIC in the BIOS.
Both tries also only loaded the UP kernel
and did not load the smp kernel on the machine.
The smp kernel was

Physical disks + Software Raid + lvm in domU
Hi,
I''m trying to setup my box as described below:
- The Dom0 exports two disks as physical devices to the DomU
- DomU use the two devices to assemble a software raid device (/dev/md0)
- On the /dev/md0 I create a lvm volume group and lvm volumes on it.
Everything seems to work fine if the lvm volumes on the DomU are lightly
used. Under heavy load the DomU freeze up immediately.

benchmark results
I've had the chance to use a testsystem here and couldn't resist running a
few benchmark programs on them: bonnie++, tiobench, dbench and a few
generic ones (cp/rm/tar/etc...) on ext{234}, btrfs, jfs, ufs, xfs, zfs.
All with standard mkfs/mount options and +noatime for all of them.
Here are the results, no graphs - sorry:

booting from a +2TB disk
I have been trying to install CentOS 4.1 on a new server today. The
installation went fine but the system doesn't boot. It doesn't even
get to the Grub screen. The system has a 3ware 9500 series controller
and 12 250GB SATA disks which are configured for RAID5 with one hot
spare. I searched on the web and noticed that this is a Grub (and
Lilo) limitation. Is there any way around it other

RAID benchmarks
We (a small college with about 3000 active accounts) are currently in
the process of moving from UW IMAP running on linux to dovecot running
on a cluster of 3 or 4 new faster Linux machines. (Initially using
perdition to split the load.)
As we are building and designing the system, I'm attempting to take (or
find) benchmarks everywhere I can in order to make informed decisions
and so

3-layer structure and the bonnie rewrite problem
Hello list
First of all: Good work and thanks for GlusterFS!
I'm totally new to GlusterFS, but i like it a lot and think about
migrating my NFS setup completely to GlusterFS. But i ran into some
problems with my chosen structure. Hopefully someone can help out.
The first questions: i ran into some performance issues with a certain
structure/setup and like to know (before i continue testing)

SATA - SIL3112A controller
Hi folks,
I have just installed a PCI SATA controller based on the SIL3112A
chipset into my Centos-3 (latest kernel patches applied) system and
moved an existing (not the boot disk) SATA drive from the onboard
controller to the SIL-based one so I can setup software RAID with two
300GB drives. Kudzu/Linux found the controller and drives straight away
and they've appeared as 'hda' and

Yum problem CentOS 3.3?
I''m still using CentOS 3.3 as our install mechanism, then adding some
packages from a tarball of RPMs we need.
Then I run
# yum update yum
which sometimes takes a while.
Yesterday it took many hours. I like to run these from behind a
firewall in our office before taking the server to the datacenter, but
the delay meant a whole day''s delay in our trip to the datacenter

Official CentOS CD/DVD Vendor Program
All,
I would like to announce our Official CentOS CD/DVD Vendor Program.
We currently have 3 vendors, and 2 more who are putting together their
information. (Not bad ... the official program has been going for less
than 12 hours :)
The details of the program (how to get in it, what they give back to the
CentOS Project, etc.) are here:

Poor RAID performance new Xeon server?
I have just purchased an HP ProLiant HP ML110 G5 server and install ed
CentOS 5.2 x86_64 on it.
It has the following spec:
Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU 3065 @ 2.33GHz
4GB ECC memory
4 x 250GB SATA hard disks running at 1.5GB/s
Onboard RAID controller is enabled but at the moment I have used mdadm
to configure the array.
RAID bus controller: Intel Corporation 82801 SATA RAID Controller

New VLC (0.8.6) packages?
Anyone know where I could find this package for Centos 4.4 x86_64? I've
googled all over and haven't been able to find anything more current the
0.8.4a.
I'm not much of a programmer, but if someone could point me at a
"packaging for dummies" perhaps I could have a go at creating a package
if one doesn't already exist?
Cheers,

Seems like a nice lightweight server platform for non-disk-intensive apps.
