Questions about kernel updates
The latest CentOS 5 kernel, 2.6.18-8.1.15.el5 broke my box and I had to drop back to 2.6.18-8.1.14.el5 before I could play DVDs with either Xine or mplayer. ( xine-0.99.5-1.el5.rf & mplayer-1.0-0.36.rc1try2.el5.rf ). This is no big deal to me -- as long as I can make certain that the older kernel doesn't go away. If I understand the installonly plugin correctly, an entry of tokeep=4 in

Problems after performing yum update
I performed the update yesterday that included installing kernel 2.6.9-42.0.2.EL and replacing ethereal with wireshark. First, the trivial... Wireshark would not run from the KDE menu without editing the menu to change the command from "wireshark" to "kdesu wireshark" because dumpcap is at usr/sbin/dumpcap instead of /usr/bin/dumpcap . Making the change causes wireshark to

Restarting mouse services
I move my notebook around my office. Sometimes I am using the internal pointers, sometimes a USB mouse, and sometimes a USB keyboard/mouse adapter that is plugged into a kvm (actually two of them). With one of these USB k/m adapters, when I plug in, the system fails to recognize the mouse (but no problem with the keyboard). The 2 adapters are the same brand/model (Aten), but the KVMs are

Really small Linux and NAS
I have a really nice, old Libretto 110. Only 64Mb memory. I want to put Linux on it and have a network monitoring system and a traveling NAS. But all of the NASs have seemed to have grown beyond their original 64Mb size (FreeNAS now needs 128Mb). Only thing I have found is: http://www.linux-watch.com/news/NS8289526009.html Talking about Unbutu 6.0 and the 'Server' install that can

Is it better to rebuild or update my notebook for 4.4
Wow! With all the conversations here, and some things on my system, I am seriously thinking of taking another drive, install 4.4 on it, and then move my /home partition (I planned for such eventualities by putting /home on its own partition). Couple of questions: I did my current build with a ks.cfg on a floppy. Can I use the same information for 4.4 as I did for 4.3? That is none of

UP vs SMP kernel ?
There was a discussion here several days ago that was precipitated by my decision to manually install the new kernel before YUMming the upgrade to CentOS 4.2. The upgrade went south but I recovered by doing a fresh install and a bunch of copying from backups. All's well EXCEPT that I'm back in the same "box", thanks to anaconda. I set out to upgrade kernels this morning:

smbd/oplock.c:oplock_timeout_handler(375) after samba upgrade
I recently upgraded from samba 3.0.10-1.fc3 to 3.0.21b-2 running on FC5. Today was the first day of a typing class which uses the network version of Mavis Beacon Typing which depends on file sharing. The users are hanging and then getting an error message during logging into the product. In /var/log/message, I can see the following message for each user similar to: [2006/04/24

New Standard/Daylight time-change dates in rhel4u2 but not centos4.2?
>From a login on a machine with rhel4u2 I can execute the following commands and get the indicated output: date --date="Mar 25 15:00:00 UTC 2006" Sat Mar 25 10:00:00 EST 2006 date --date="Mar 25 15:00:00 UTC 2007" Sun Mar 25 11:00:00 EDT 2007 As you can see, the output differs for 2006 and 2007. mozilla and seamonkey not the same
I have searched the bugzilla and seamonkey has bugs when using "-remote openurl(www.google.com)" it always opens a new window. Mozilla did not have this problem. How can I continue to use the old mozilla? Both for system updates and for new 4.4 installs. I need the -remote functionality to not open new windows. Thanks, Jerry

how to replace files only if larger
I am consolidating a lot of files. I have archives of Internet drafts, from over the years. I just pulled down all the current Internet Drafts. I want to mv all my other stored IDs to this current directory ONLY if, they are larger. You may be aware that when a draft is expired, a small file is left in the directory for some time with content like: "This Internet-Draft has been

slow usb hard disk performance.
Dear All, I tried a USB2 Maxtor One touch II external hard disk on a couple of my Centos 4.2 boxes and found it initiallised the SCSI subsystem ok and added device "sda". But the performance is miserable, yet the same hardware running XP the performance is satisfactory. HDPARM gives results varying from 120k/sec to , at its peak 4.75M/s on a USB 2 machine, still very poor by any

allowing users to issue the "shutdown" command
I am running CentOS 5.3 and have just the two accounts "root" and "buz". I would like to be able to issue "shutdown" from the account "buz", and thus created /etc/shutdown.allow with the single entry "buz" (without any quotes). I still get the error message "only root can do this" (or something similar) even if I include the

OT - backup question/advice
Hello, I have been using mondorescue to backup to dvd for several months now without any problems. Since upgrading to Centos 4.4, I now receive a few errors. The errors are for files in /var/named/chroot/proc. I guess these files change so when I do a differntial backup they aren't there and result in errors. (Never got any errors before and I think these files were there in 4.3) If I

Help with first S3-class
Hi, I am trying to understand S3 classes. I have read several tutorials about the topics but I am still a bit confused. I guess it is because it is so different from Java OOP. I have pasted my attempt at creating a bank-account class below and my problems are: 1. What should be added some plot.default() calls the account$plot() method ? 2. What should the account$plot() be implemented to
