Manipulating text files
Dear R Community, I am trying to optimize a water quality model that I am using. Based on conversations with others more familiar with what I am doing I plan to implement DEOptim to do this. The water quality model is interfaced through a GUI. I have the input file necessary to alter parameters and run the model as a text file. To do the optimization I have figured out the general procedure

Violin plot of categorical/binned data
Hi, I'm trying to create a plot showing the density distribution of some shipping data. I like the look of violin plots, but my data is not continuous but rather binned and I want to make sure its binned nature (not smooth) is apparent in the final plot. So for example, I have the number of individuals per vessel, but rather than having the actual number of individuals I have data in the

vertical kites in KiteChart (plotrix)
Dear everyone, I would like to create a kite chart in which I plot densities (width of the vertical kites) in relation to sediment depth (on reversed y-axis) for 6 different locations (Distances from seep site, on x-axis on top of the plot). The dataset I would like to use is: Distance_from_seep_site Sedimentdepth Density 1100 0 107.8 1100 1 264.6 1100 2 284.2

R kiteChart (plotrix) arguments
Hey, I hope someone is able to help. I've created a graph using kiteChart (in the plotrix package) but need to know how to perform some basic text alterations to the graph. I would like to re-orientate the text on the y-axis from vertical to horizontal. I understand that the argument normally for this is las=1. However, this does not seem to work. Perhaps kitechart uses an alternative

Text wrap
Hi everyone. I have a long label that I would like to split. I found that I could use "strwrap" for simple text. However, this is not working with this label: str = expression(paste("< 20 ?m phytoplankton ","(cells ? ",mL^-1,")")) plot(...., ylab = strwrap(str,20),...) I suspect this is because I'm using "expression" for form my label.

kiteChart to show real values with scalebar
Dear R-users I hope someone could help me on this problem. I want to create a multiple kiteChart showing the real values with a scalebar on each indicating the scale . Here are some sample data to show what I want to achieve. Y <- read.table(textConnection("Sample1 Sample2 60 20 150 50 300

Preparing data frame for Plotrix kiteChart
Although, I can fix this, I am trying to sort out something as straighforward as possible for my students, and I have some questions that hopefully someone can help me with. My data is: Species Distance Count A 5 0 A 10 5 A 15 5 A 20 3 A 25 1 B 5 8 B 10 20 B 15 28 B 20 12 B 25 12 C 5 5 C 10 12 C 15 19 C 20 27 C 25 34 But I am struggling to get this into a data frame that does

floating point exceptions, and questions
#include <float.h> should define DBL_MIN and FLT_MIN, as well as DBL_MIN_EXP and FLT_MIN_EXP (such that 10eFLT_MIN_EXP is a valid float) This is a standard header file. But gcc now hides it away (mine was in /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-linux/<compiler-version>/include/ ) BTW - any corrections for my surf.chimie.uqam.ca/~kruus/vorbis/ stuff? docs URL
Hi. I've put up some docs related to my first encounter with the vorbis source code at http://surf.chimie.uqam.ca/~kruus/vorbis/encoder/index.html It documents a newbie's first look and [serious] attempts to trace through examples/example_encoder.c . Don't laugh too hard! Even though the docs are quite un-doc-like, I've stopped working on them indefinitely, since Monty

IF/Else
Hi, I am trying to write a for loop with if else statements to calculate biomass density estimates for different types of sampling gear. My code is: bmd=for (i in 1:length(Gear)){ if (Gear==20) {bioden=Biomass/141} else {if (Gear==23) {bioden=Biomass/68}} else {if (Gear==160) {bioden=Biomass/4120}} else {if (Gear==170) {bioden=Biomass/2210}} else {if (Gear==300)

Thanks for helping - back to the community?
DeaR R-fellows, I got a lot of help from you concerning the generation of heat maps, so I was able to write and work with a script for this purpose at last. Some visitors of our Ecological Station asked about the generation of the graphs and so I decided to write down a small description. Is it adviseable to publish the link to the article in an R-wiki (which?) so I can give back a little to the

Anova problem with order of terms in model
Hi I have a linear model and I want to tests whether the model terms are significant I used anova but F and P value depend on the order of the terms in the model. I have repeated the same analysis in another stat software and F and P value did not differ with order of terms in the model. Can anyone can explain what happen or what am I doing wrong ? PCA legend outside of PCA plot
Hi All, I have been trying to get to plot my PCA legend outside of the PCA plot, but success still alludes me. Can you guys please advise how I can achieve this. I used locater() to obtain coordinates for below the Comp.1 axis. Using these coordinates the legend disappears. Below is the code for the PCA and legend. Thanks in advance for the help. problem with interaction in lmer even after creating an "interaction variable"
Dear all, I have a problem with interactions in lmer. I have 2 factors (garden and gebiet) which interact, plus one other variable (home), dataframe arr. When I put: / lmer (biomass ~ home + garden:gebiet + ( 1|Block), data = arr)/ it writes: /Error in lme4::lFormula(formula = biomass ~ home + garden:gebiet + (1 | : rank of X = 28 < ncol(X) = 30/ In the lmer help I found out that if not

print to .jpeg
Evening folks, I'm trying to print a series of graphs to .jpeg using a variable as the title, but run into the difficultly that I can't find a way to append the file extension to the .jpeg (in this case extensionless!) files. Example: ---- species.name="CussoniaHolstii" dia<-10:100 biomass = -21.4863 + 0.5797 * (dia ^ 2) biomass jpeg(species.name) plot (biomass,

Help/ Mathematics
Hi R users, I need your help to write a code in r that does the following calculation from three different datasets; ac = 1/sum (NPP from date 1 to date 2, dataset=1) * (biomass at date 2 -biomass at date 1, dataset = 2) + (littfall at date 2, dataset=3). all the dates are in yr-month-day format. Which library or function Should I use to tell R do these calculations of these variables at
