Problem with greek "beta" symbol in plot using CairoPDF (Windows)
Dear R-Helpers, I have a problem with displaying the greek "beta" symbol in PDF files using Cairo library - it displays as an empty box. The same also happens for a dash symbol in subscript. Both symbols are displayed correctly if the plot is produced on screen (outside of CairoPDF). The syntax that I use for it in plot command is:

Symbol Font Baseline, Cairo, Card Symbols
I think I found a bug in the Cairo library, plus weird behavior in both the Cairo and the normal pdf device. The baseline of the spades symbol seems to be off. This is easier to show than it is to explain. The problem does not appear in the normal pdf device, which is why I am guessing this is a Cairo bug. moreover, I cannot figure out why three of the card symbols seem to be transparent, but

Kerning issues with CairoPDF
Dear list members I'm using CairoPDF to generate PDF (because of its font embedding and support for transparent colours). However, at least on my (Windows) system, the text it outputs seems to have completely wrong kerning. Here's an example: CairoPDF("test.pdf") plot(rnorm(100),xlab="Ovreset") dev.off() The v is (slightly) too far away from the O, it's much

CairoPDF and greek letter spacing
I have a small problem with R graphics output. When I use the lattice package and CairoPDF to generate publication quality graphs I often use the expression to create an axis title that has microlitres or micrometers as a unit. I use something like the following 'expression(paste("Length (", mu,"m )"))' as an argument to the xlabel function. The command works but the mu

Building R with Cairo
All- I have been hacking on an R 2.15 build on an Ubuntu 10.4 box, and I do not know how to debug R's error message regarding cairo "working". Configuration completes without the expected additional capability (cairo) R is now configured for x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu > Source directory: . > Installation directory: /app/vendor/R > C compiler:

Fine Tuning Plotrix
Dear All, Please see the code snippet at the end of the email. I am using the color2D.matplot in Plotrix to plot a matrix. It works great, but there are a few things I cannot figure out (1) the value of cex.axis in the code snippet does not seem to affect the final pdf at all (at least on my system, Ubuntu 9.10, plotrix and Cairo installed from cran). How do I specify the size of the axis ticks

Greek letters in CairoPDF
Hello there, Straight to the point: it seems that CairoPDF from package "Cairo" cannot handle greek letters from expression(). For example, > eta = seq(from=-pi, to=pi, length=100) > f = sin(eta)^2 > pdf(file = "temp_pdf.pdf") > plot(eta, f, type="l", main=expression(f(eta)==sin(eta)^2), xlab=expression(eta), ylab=expression(f(eta))) > dev.off()

Cairo package failure to load backend
Hi R friends, I've been attempting to create plots with multiple alpha values using Cairo to save them on a windows (32b XP) platform as it doesn't support more than 3 alpha values. This worked well until I wanted a postscript file (unsupported) and as a attempted work around I installed RGtk2. So far so good, however now when I try to use a >CairoPDF("alpha.pdf", 6, 6,

One possible cause for incorrect symbols in X11() output
There have been spasmodic reports of symbols such as pi and infinity in plotmath being reproduced incorrectly on the X11 device on some Linux systems (at least Ubuntu 10 and Fedora 12/13), and we've managed to track down one cause whilst investigating PR#14355. Some systems have Wine and hence the Wine symbol font installed. 'fontconfig', which is used by cairographics in

Font quality in base graphics
I am attempting to get publication quality graphs using R on Ubuntu. I encounter lots of problems in using cex to control font size: for instance cex=1.5 results in very blocky characters. I then tried to use res=1200 while creating a PNG file, hoping that this would solve the problem, but it did not. When doing the above, a second problem appeared: the font size relative to the graphics decreased

PDFs and SVGs containing rasterGrobs don't display correctly in some other software
I've just been trying to post-process some R-created heatmaps using Inkscape, but I can't get them to display correctly in that software. To reproduce: library(grid) r <- as.raster(matrix(runif(25), 5, 5)) pdf("test.pdf") grid.newpage() grid.raster(r, interpolate = FALSE) dev.off() This figure should be a five by five block of grey squares. This is what I see in the R GUI

Fontconfig warning with X11() on MAC OS X 10.4
I posted previously about problems with X11() on my MAC using R 2.8.1 . After installing the securilty update for Tiger this morning, X11() now works from an xterm :-) However, I receive the following warnings with any plotting command using the default X11 settings. Fontconfig warning: no <cachedir> elements found. Check configuration. Fontconfig warning: adding

Cairo creates italized plots?
Hi, Has anyone else run into this weird behaviour where the text in the plots created using Cairo are always italicized. For example, library(Cairo) Cairo(file='cairo_created', type='pdf', dpi=100) plot(1:10) dev.off() This produces the following attached 'cairo_created.pdf' graph. Notice how the text is italicized. The same code but using pdf() as the graphics

Plotmath on Fedora 31 broken with with pango >= 1.44 - workarounds?
Hi Thanks for your input on this I?aki and Nicolas. I am starting testing an R fix for this problem today. As suggested, the plan is to allow the R user to specify a font family other than "symbol" for plotmath output (or, more generally, in R parlance, for 'font=5' or 'fontface=5') on a Cairo-based graphics device. Full_Name: Yan Wong Version: 2.8.1 OS: Mac OS X 10.4 Submission from: (NULL) (78.149.167.246) When printing a plot to and svg file, text intended to be in italics is rendered in bold (svg file viewed using both Safari 3.2.1 and Firefox 2.0.0.9. For example, try viewing the test.svg file generated by svg("test.svg", width=4,4,8) plot.new();

updated some packages now some windows hang after open or close
I had a need on a centos 5.4 x86_64 box to try and run with a later totem. I desired to do this by source. After installing the packages below my system comes up, I thought everything was good. thunderbird comes up firefox comes up. totem works -------- however there seems to be an issue with closing or opening windows some random time later with all three programs. It gives the impression

copy/paste centos 6
I had to update all these packages on CentOS 6 for a project. Everything works great on CentOS 6 - except - Copy/Paste between applications. Anyone - know which application below might control that function? Example I cannot have firefox running and copy and paste text into thunderbird. Both applications - actually all applications work - I just cant copy/paste. I'm thinking I did not
